it looks like a fabulous museum. But a very dissappointing UA-cam video shot and commentaried by a chap who obviously wouldn't know a camera from a crib. Thinks studio processing is a transmitter. Shows us the outside of vans that look, of course, much like any big van, but doesn't show us what's inside, which is the interesting and unique bit. Lesson on filming 101: Dwell on the items so we can see what it is - don't whirl about continuously as though you want us dizzy.

What a fascinating video - a glimpse into my past in a couple of respects, one going just under a decade back and the other around five. In late 2014 I went for a Tour Guide interview day in Manchester at the 'Coronation Street' set. Sadly, I wasn't successful, but it was a fascinating experience all the same. As part of the interview process there was a role-play where one had to imagine one was a personality on the Manchester musical scene taking a tour round the city on a musical theme. As I'm a bit of a Hollies fan and a wannabe drummer I chose to play Bobby Elliott, which puzzled many of my co-interviewees, who were mostly considerably younger than 'Yours Truly'! At that time I had yet to discover the female Pop of the former Soviet Bloc, that coming in the following year. Had the interview day taken place around a year-and-a-half later, after discovering that Helena Blehárová had played at the 'Daily Mail' International Jazz Festival of 1963, at Belle Vue, Manchester I'd probably have played her, which may have been yet more mystifying! I see that you focussed on a VCR machine from what you described as your school days. That's the precise make and model that my late mother would have used as the Audio-Visual Aids Technician at the freshly-built Belper High School, where she started in early 1974, shortly after the school's first-ever Christmas/New Year holiday. At that time my older brother had already started at the new school, continuing the O-Levels he had started in the Fourth Form at Herbert Strutt School and I was to follow him up there in September of that year, becoming part of the first-ever academic year making the transition from Fourth Year at Herbert Strutt Middle School to the Lower Year at Belper High School, the Middle Year being my first academic year taking my O-Levels, while my older brother was finishing his A-Levels. A quarter-century before starting at Belper High School my mother, in the year she turned nineteen, made a two-sided 78 RPM private recording accompanied by her mother on the piano and on the day I learned of her passing in February 2017 I recorded and uploaded that recording to my channel as a tribute to her memory. I hope you enjoy that should you drop by those videos.

Thank you for your comment and I'm delighted you like the video, Christopher. Love the story about the tour guide interview. I don't think I'd be brave enough to go along to one of those, especially with role-play involved, so it sounds like you did well even to get shortlisted. I'd love to have one of those Ferguson VCRs - they're built like tanks! Bryan, who filmed this video, does have one so I'm very envious:) Will certainly check out the 78rpm record that your mother appears on. What a great and unusual reminder of her to have.

Well, that was a trip along one of my 'famous' walks when the wild early plum trees at an industrial estate on Alfreton Road in Derby are fruiting from late July into mid to late August and I go to pick them for jam and fruit crumbles! On the way out from my house I join Duffield Bank at the Holly Bush, Makeney, follow Duffield Bank to the Bridge Inn, then cut through the footpath that joins Eaton Bank near the old mill and it's Eaton Bank, Little Eaton, the cycle path then Alfreton Road itself from then on. I note you passed by Strutt's Community Centre, where I was at school from September 1972 to July 1974, from the year-in-transition from Grammar to Middle School to its first as a Middle School. That period in my life has subsequently attained a huge level of 'Retro-spective' ;-) interest, coinciding with the height of Valérie Čižmárová's recording career, as you will learn at the 'Valérie Čižmárová: A Life In Sound' page of the 'Hotlips On The Horse Tram' Fan Blog. Noting the date of shooting that may have coincided with my four-centred holiday first in Slovakia then in the Czech Republic in June 2019, partly celebrating the half-century on from Valérie Čižmárová's appearance at the Bratislavská Lýra festival, performing her debut single, a cover of Bobby Hebb's 'Sunny', first in her home town of Michalovce, then in Banská Bystrica, then the Hotel Dominika in Petržalka, Bratislava and finishing off in the home city of her sometime theatrical colleague, Miluška Voborníková, Mladá Boleslav.

@@d.w.390EzraHawkwind They're mine! All mine! ;-) It is a very scenic drive and my late father was very fond of the Banks as an alternative to the A6 for travelling into Derby. The Strutt's Community Centre is the large red sandstone building on the right as one enters Belper from the south. There is a large sign saying Strutt's indicating it. I might take a look around that shop at DeBradelei. On to rather sad matters I see that the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico is in hospital in Banská Bystrica after being shot, as I write.

That was me on the floor looking through the 'Cheap Shite' records for 50p a throw at 5:39, in the black polo shirt with the olive green trim and brown trousers! Apparently, 'Cheap Shite' equals a VG+ to NM 1974 album from Kirsti Sparboe and Benny Borg, entitled 'På verdens tak' ('Thank You To The World'), so named after its title track, a cover of The Carpenters' 'Top Of The World' - a very appropriate title given that Kirsti Sparboe was born within the Arctic Circle in Tromsø. The topical attraction of the record was that (a) it was from Scandinavia and (b) that it came from 1974, purchased the day after the Eurovision Song Contest celebrated the half-century on from ABBA's triumph in Brighton. I run a couple of music Blogs, one on female Pop singers of the satellite nations of the former Soviet Bloc, 'Girls Of The Golden East' and the other the Fan Blog for Valérie Čižmárová, 'Hotlips On The Horse Tram'. In that context it suited me that Kirsti Sparboe was born in the birth year of - going through the artists chronologically - Zsuzsa Koncz, Eva Sepešiová, Jana Kocianová, Angela Similea and Hana Zagorová, 1946 and that, in looking through some of Kirsti's performances, I get an awful lot of Valérie in her looks and attitude. The absolute bargain basement vinyl on a Scandinavian theme didn't end there. In the bag next to the 'Cheap Shite' LPs there were singles also going for 50p a throw, including a VG+ single made in Sweden from way back in 1955 of The Modern Jazz Quartet who are in my record collection thanks to their 'Place Vendôme' LP with The Swingle Singers from 1967. An important way station on the way to my Blogs was the French singer, Carene Cheryl, who later changed her stage name to Karen Cheryl before reverting to her real name of Isabelle Morizet. In amongst her many talents is drumming - just like The Carpenters' Karen Carpenter! - and she won First Prize at the Paris Drumming Conservatoire run by The Modern Jazz Quartet's Kenny Clarke. I recently featured Carene Cheryl's French-language cover of ABBA's 'Mamma Mia!', 'Oh! Mam(m)a mia' at my channel, BTW, celebrating the half-century on from her signing a recording contract of ten years' duration with her future Manager/Producer, «Mémé» Ibach, presenting it in my best French, of course! There were a couple of other acquisitions at Retro Tech UK 2024 of differing levels of satisfaction. One was an ITT-KB Tiny Super of the type I got for my twelfth birthday - on Isabelle Morizet's eighteenth! - in July 1973 that was DOA, I'm afraid to say and the other was an ITT Weekend Automatic that is fortunately in more or less perfect working order. I suppose it has to be said that - given that the former was £8 and the latter £20 - £28 would still have been none too bad for a fully functioning four-band vintage radio from what could be called the 'Silver Age' of radios, or maybe the 'Bronze Age', so that £8 is no great loss, really and I can still just show people the physical thing I got for that twelfth birthday! It was an enjoyable - if rather hot! - walk to and from Ryton-on-Dunsmore from Coventry railway station and I was generally very pleased with my navigation using an old 1991 street atlas of Coventry that didn't quite include Leamington Road and I managed to get back home to Belper before 8.30 pm...on a Sunday!

@@ERiC-1 Indeed I am! I should also have mentioned that 1955 was the (real!) birth year of Isabelle Morizet, unless one could have worked that out with a bit of simple mental arithmetic! I say "(real!)" advisedly, as the aforementioned «Mémé» Ibach thought it might be a good idea to instruct his young charge to make out that she was two years younger than she actually was, such that all contemporary records in the French entertainment press from the late Seventies and Eighties have her birth year as 1957, which confused me no end, making me initially think that all these Web-based sources quoting the birth year as 1955 were plain wrong! The pretence lasted all the way into the 1990s, apparently, by which time it had outlived its usefulness. It was terrible watching a children's Christmas-time TV show from sometime in the mid-Eighties, at a time when Karen Cheryl had been in a child-oriented feature film about meeting Santa Claus, where she was living that lie in real time in front of her ever-believing audience. "Don't tell fibs, children!"

@@d.w.390EzraHawkwind Thanks for putting a name to the 'Cheap Shite' merchant. That's a shame that Alan doesn't go any nearer than that rail-travel-wise to Belper...and thanks for the compliments on my transporting things purchased at such events. I went equipped with my large weekend shoulder bag that's taken me around the Czech Republic and Slovakia on three occasions just in case there was a medium-sized valve radio going for a song. That still wouldn't have matched the case of my Pye VHF3D 'Stereophonic', which I took home from an old second-hand shop in Belper in a wheelbarrow since my parents were away on a summer's holiday at the time and I wasn't going to wait for their return to try it out! If you go to my UA-cam profile the Blogs are linked from there and I hope you enjoy some of the incredibly cool stuff the former Soviet Bloc devised, including 'Eastern Soul' - Northern Soul-like music composed entirely within the Bloc.

Very interesting, but try not to wave the camera around so much. I have, or have had some of that stuff over the years but had to downsize when we emigrated to France. Some of it was sold well below it's value as some buyers just wanted the valves and dumped the rest, which really p*ss*d me off when I realised. I could do with a place like that to offload stuff I've accumulated since being here and I'm running out of space. Cheers!

I enjoyed your video and I wish you success. I recall losing my local Ipswich Airport many years ago, with twin RAF (USAF) bases closing down near the Town and later still the nearby RAF jet fighter base. It's quite a shock to suddenly lose all that great aviation and opportunities for people to learn about aviation and even become a part of the aviation industry. I've now lived way longer in Norfolk than my childhood days in Suffolk, and in Norwich we're lucky to have a functional airport with around a dozen choppers serving the North Sea Gas industry, and regular fixed wing jets doing the same . . plus a holiday flight most days. But Norwich Airport has also been impacted by development, with housing and industrial estates crowding up against the perimeter fence, and a substantial amount of airfield land lost to a noisy dual-carriageway link that now runs between the aviation museum and the airport. The lovely green and country expanse shown in your video reminds me of the old summer days at the aviation museum, with birdsong and bigs skies only occasionally broken by air traffic arriving and departing. Now it's just the constant drone of the road, although the museum is most definitely still worth a visit. Great to see a Robinson, funnily enough I videod one myself at the airport today. It saddens me to think of another airfield disappearing, particularly one with links to the brave Poles who flew for Britain. I hope 'they' find another way, and leave the airport alone.
