139: Minisode - Navigating Home Projects & Real Estate Woes
In this episode, Stacy explains how she is lightening her DIY load, and Daniel describes a frustrating week. The conversation highlights the low-key crazy of hyper-local Facebook groups, navigating real estate contracts, dealing with contractor bids, and the emotional impact of online relationships.
First, Stacy shares how she hired someone to help with the lingering home projects around her house. Despite receiving some very unwelcome comments about the ad she posted in her small-town Facebook group, Stacy found the perfect person to fill the position. Her new apprentice is excited to learn and gain skills.
Then, Daniel expresses his dissatisfaction about the continuing delays with the contracts for the cottage he is selling. The lawyers involved seem to lack urgency.
Next, he discusses the ongoing challenge of securing accurate bids to install air conditioning in his old house.
Finally, Daniel ends the episode with a touching tribute to a long-time blog reader and Instagram follower who died unexpectedly.

    If you drill the plexiglass with a step bit you don't need the router or the hardware to mount the plexiglass, just use screws and washers to mount the plexiglass to the wood frame. Not everyone has a friend with a router.

    I made some indoor storm windows out of screen frames cut to fit the window. I used screen frames because I wanted to be able to use thick plastic and press it into the groove using the rubber screen binding to hold the plastic in place and once the screen is inserted into window frame I use silicone to seal any gaps.

    Fifteen years ago I stumbled upon this, like Rebecca, and thought the same. I wonder if I can find any? Fifteen years ago there wasn’t anything on the internet. I started collecting the catalogs and in time located all of the testimonial homes. It’s like doing genealogy. So, thousands of dollars later in ephemera and even more hours logged here I am. After that I decided I would find WHERE the plans that these mail order “kit” home companies came from. Most of the bungalow designs come from west coast architects which I have featured in blogs and posts. The cement block designs came from Jens Pederson a Travis City, Mi architect. I expanded my research to pattern homes and reading building trade journals. That’s when I realized that Sears and the others were most often using designs from other sources and like Rebecca mentioned, their free lance architects just reworked, tweaked, signed off, approved them. That little project of just wanting to find one and see what they look like (which I found to be they look like any other home really) has ended up being a major research project! I’m currently trying to scan and upload my collection to fill in what no one else has. Each catalog takes me around 6-8 hours from start to finish. It’s time consuming!

    in Old New England Mr. Manning trained us to clean the stone remove any soil or loose mater, then let it dry, then do concrete mixing with a shovel in the wheel barrow to mix it manually. If you have large spaces you actually need to fit some stone in them, definitely to have it not break up again.

      That’s a good practice but you were using cement mortar which will trap moisture and then crack due to freeze/that cycle. Lime mortar is much more flexible and also self repairs which is its most useful and amazing quality.

    • @mars9953
      @mars9953 9 місяців тому

      Thanks for stating this. I was frustrated after watching the video and rewinding it a few times to realize that she didn’t show her attaching the weatherstripping, and where she attached the weather stripping . And wondered about your final question as well. Thanks for answering my major question.

    • @marcisaacs9407
      @marcisaacs9407 9 місяців тому

      @@mars9953hi, I had to rewatch the video to help you . She actually answered my last question at the end which I didn’t see before. If you slow down the speed, she is applying weather stripping to the channel she routed. So there is a seal between the frame and the plexiglass which she compresses later with some folded paper behind the bow tie shaped fasteners. She said her frame fits so well that any seal between her built frame and the home’s painted existing frames is unnecessary. After watching others and knowing about windows as I do I offer this. First air and wind should not be heard at all in any window situation. The slightest sounds through small places are telling you there is a space. Really any sound penetration is an indication. So if people’s voices can be easily heard outside, the wind can get in. Two. The decision of whether to put a seal against the existing frame work , effectively sandwiching it between the old and the new is one way. It’s also done by cutting the frames slightly under size and applying a kind of tubular material to the perimeter which changes the contact to the edge instead of the face. I think indow is such a company. Lastly and most importantly. The best thing is dead air space for insulation. If you put in the indoor frame but the seal on the regular window isn’t actually sealed, then the inside of the window is breathing and thus not forming dead air between that and your new. This means the wind may be blocked but it’s not insulating. Sorry for being long winded ( no pun intended) God bless you🙏

    Do you notice any moisture or mold issues with this system. I wonder if it is possible to caulk the seams around the old windows and add this frame and caulk, then drill a small hole to fill with argon. Then put a plug over the hole to keep the gas in. 🤔
