Australia vs. The World: Why we’re Behind on High-Speed Rail
Australia vs. The World: Why we’re Behind on High-Speed Rail
Why is Australia so far behind on high-speed rail? While other countries race ahead with bullet trains connecting cities at lightning speed, Australia remains stuck with outdated rail options. In this video, we’ll dive into the challenges holding Australia back-from funding and infrastructure issues to unique geographical hurdles. We'll compare Australia’s rail system to high-speed networks in Japan, Europe, and China, exploring what needs to change for Australia to catch up. Join us as we uncover why Australia’s high-speed rail dreams keep stalling and what it would take to finally bring them to life.

What new terminals?? There is only going to be 1 new terminal whoch will be off the domestic and they dont even know if they will have internation flight departing it. And the runway is already completed and has been for quite awhile. As for the international terminal they are already at capacity but are not adding any new check in counters!! So don't know how they will be bringing more people in. Maybe via Sydney or Melbourne... 😂

It is imperative that the rail lines be a dual / pair and not a single line - because then many trains can concurrently run in both directions. It is also imperative that all rail radii (bends / curves) be greater than 4000 metres (so these trains can safely travel at over 250 km/h) - and it would really help if they used a "Wide" rail gauge of 8' 4" (2540 mm) - to match width 10' 0" (3040 mm) width rail rolling stock (which is standard these days) and not the narrow 4'8.5" (CE 1846 UK "Standard") gauge that was engineered for 6' 0" width rail cars but pressed into service with 8' 0" rail cars - matching the width of Bullock/Oxen Drays. With this "Wide" rail gauge the trains could then very safely run at over 350 km/h all the way.

If you believe that sales pitch than you will believe there is pixies in the garden. None of it is connected and Carlingford as the termination point is so inefficient. It should have carried on to Epping. Where the Transport options are greater in destinations and transport options. At leas there other ends at Olympic Park. But can say it is better than the road train here in Brisbane, I mean the very expensive Road Metro that gave the people here a present of Road Train Trucks now running around on AB double Routed Roads.

The cost of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail in Indonesia is $80 million per kilometer. A budget of $368 billion will build 4,600 kilometers of high-speed rail, which is much more useful than some used high-quality nuclear-powered submarines. The distance from Cairns to Perth via Melbourne and Adelaide by road is over 4,400 kilometers. The main obstacle will be land acquisition and high labour cost (no worries, the robots are coming).

Not really possible to go to Epping. There is no space on Carlingford Road for it and no space on the residential streets running next to it. To Carlingford Court definitely makes sense but all the way to Epping would require tunnelling or elevated tracks which is a bit overkill for a light rail system

i don't know why people still think a melbourne-sydney HSR is worth discussing let alone building. a 900km line between 2 cities of 5/6 million each with little in between will never stack up economically even if the terrain is easy, which it certainly isn't from Sydney to Junee at least. If you don't believe that, take the ride. Air travel is the way to go in Aus, and it already does a very good job, and is much more flexible and efficient in getting ppl from A to B, M or X.. less flights and larger capacity aircraft would help environmentally between the big centres

Easy answer. Lobbying from private self interested parties who support particular Conservative governments re, road haulage for freight, which then affects The viability of an improved or new rail network for passenger mostly. Combined with the current stupidity of our current state government By buying new updated inter city trains, capable supposedly of 160 km speeds When the infrastructure is crumbling , and especially the trackwork. Climb aboard a fancy new carriage, and take just as long, or longer because of deteriorating track work to complete your journey. Has anyone recently had a look at our Northern Rail link near Urunga and Coffs Harbour. To call it third world is too much credit. For now, forget high speed 200 km rail Sydney to Newcastle, with new tunnels, feasibility studies, problems with Land acquisition,it won't happen in our Lifetime. Inspect track ,, realign, straighten where possible, camber the tighter curves , And invest in tilting Rolling stock like many overseas countries. Now, you need a decent timetable to mix express and stopping journeys. No use catching a modern fast train that stops All the way from Sydney to Newcastle. Maybe have to compromise for now by one stopping first half of journey and another stopping second half. Commuters are big percentage of revenue. Maybe install passing loops at regular intervals. Relatively cheap option. Out of hours majority of runs virtually non stop , major stops Only. Every hour? Now stoppers can fit inbetween . Food for thought?. Reality. Thanks Howard

After decades of delay, Australians should realise that if the interstate high-speed rail project "needs" to be done, an independent federal institution must be established, and a corresponding law is also required to protect the existence and authority of this federal institution from being easily abolished by the new government if they are not happy with the high-speed rail project. To achieve this, a series of legislations should be successfully performed within 1 or 2 federal terms, and the first term must have the pro-HSR party in a majority government. But what are the real circumstances? Some Australians obviously don't believe such a future-proof project is "needed." Therefore, no major party will be brave enough to proceed with the abovementioned steps since the majority government will be in danger at the next election. In addition, a critical problem with Australia's tax system might be a hurdle for this project. Australians pay their income tax and GST to the federal government, and the federal government then divides the tax funds back to each state and territory through some mechanism. I'm not sure if it will happen, but some people on the West Coast will probably worry that their tax funds could be used to build the high-speed rail while the high-speed rail makes no sense for them since they're living too far from the rail line. This is a fundamental tax-related problem when the federal government wants to support projects that will cost a lot and benefit only some people living in a particular area.

The video raises some great points as to why HSR has never succeeded in eastern Australia. Namely population, cost and geography and short political terms. HSR is a major investment and not going to be done over a short 3 year period. I question the car culture - city centric state governments love them yes, but the people I personally wonder???? Cars and roads are safer today, but the licencing system, driver education and training and in turn the open road speed limits are simply not up to scratch, and city centric state grubernments like it this way in my opinion to raise cheap easy revenue off the roads. By just blaming $peed kill$ every chance they get, for every accident (weather speed actually is or is not the problem is not in my opinion an issue for city govts). In reality if $peed really did kill - then i would be dead, why because i have litterally done that much speeding. Rural Australia is still very open and empty. I am very open to straightening the curves from Sydney to Melbourne which could shave the train travel time from 11 hrs to 6, I have heard. Meanwhile Australian population continues to grow. Maybe in time we could then seriously consider HSR. When that time is depends upon our politics, But i seriously question if the lnp will be taken seriously by Gen Y and Z, without a faster travel, lower cost, more environmentally freindly transport policy, than just planes. HSR would allow new land in regional areas to be opened up for housing. I am very open to taxing the fossil fuel industry and big business more to get such national investment.
