Maiden voyage
Part 13, Smuggler 28 - Finally time to test my boat.
The engine is mounted and rigged and everything is good to go. I'm still building the boat and have many many things to finalise before I'm done, but one goal was to use her this summer, so here we go. The prop I use is something that I had back home and will be a good reference for future testing, but today it's all about just getting out on the water.

Part 12, Smuggler 28 - Installing Eva foam decking, helm seats and making seat cushions and sun bed
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
The boat is finally in the water. The engine is not rigged yet but I started to put in Eva foam as decking on the floor and on the gunwale. Seats are installed and also cushions are made from scratch. This video could have easily been split up in three parts, but I´m too restless and wait. There is unfortunately quite a few pictures included in this film, becaue it turned out I didn't have that...

After 20 months of restoring and rebuilding on late nights and weekends I now had one day left, before we were launching all the boats on the boatyard into the water, to mount my engine. Amazing boat and job ! I have the same engine on Kelt White shark 236 (Ray Hunt hull) very strong for 225 (I think close to240hp) powerfull low and mid, lack of power above 5500 rpm , I think max 5500 5600 it's more than enough for this version of 4.2 . 42-43 knots with saltwaters S2 17' light weight, but slip in folloween seas, Revolution 4 17', almost same rpm and speed , 1 hole up the engine, I will try now second hole higher . The hull of your boat it was far ahead of its time! I think many have copied several of its characteristics! Amazing Scandinavian naval architecture! :) Regards from South Aegian, Greece .

Nice job and good choice of material, but a small tip is to always start with at least one layer of 450gr carved carpet and air it well. This bites better and takes up any unevenness. And always finish with a chopped 450gr chopped to then be able to secure for continued lamination. The carved mat is easier to sand and get a nicer result, and it will be a smoother surface. If you are going to laminate against gelcoat, it may be good to lay three layers of 450gr chopped after the first mat has hardened so that the targeted mat does not give structure to the gelcoat.

To have the cavitation plate at the proper height on the outboard will require it to be mounted higher then the sterndrive was. A 60mph boat ypu have to go up 1" for every 12" you go back. You may have to go 2" or more up to avoid dragging the motor and reducing speed and efficiency.

    • @boatdevoted
