Let's Play Case of the Golden Idol! [4] The Explosive Events in the Forest Cabin
I apologize in advance if this counts as "backseat gaming" OR if you already knew this, but I wanted to ask: Did you know you can flee from random encounters? You mentioned you're recording this in October so you might've already gotten past this section. I'm not saying you should or telling you to flee any battles, I'm just curious if you are aware of that option since I don't think I've ever seen you flee a battle. (If I remember correctly)
I... Did not know. And I wanted to so many times! Ahhhhh!! Oh well. I've finished the game at this point, but now I know if I ever replay it hahaha. Thanks for commenting! Also don't sweat at all about backseat gaming with me, as long as it's not story spoilers or secrets I haven't reached yet, then I'm good. :)
Thanks for mentioning me haha, and its no problem. I forgot how freakin' crazy and creepy Hojo's first transformation is, haven't seen it in a while! I do think the design looks cool in a way at the same time. Also, I noticed your playlist link in the video description is linked to a different game! :O
Oh know! Thanks I'll look into it. Weird! I really wasn't expecting Hojo to be such a big bad, more of a bumbling lackey scientist guy haha. Almost at the end!
Seems like you picked up the Reference gimmick a lot faster than you did Eat. Also on the special level where it displays as ASCII symbols, there is a setting to toggle that view. There's the default view that most levels are in, there's a windowed view where instead of having 1 screen follow the player each box takes up part of the screen as a sort of Window, and then the third view is the ASCII view where the various rooms are also separated into various parts of the screen just like the windowed view, but displayed as the text symbols. This means you could technically toggle to a different view for that level, or you could even play the whole game as the ASCII symbols if you really wanted to (very clearly doing important work and not playing video games). There's also other settings such as toggling different color palettes, or playing with a grid. I played Patrick Parabox with the grid enabled because I found it helpful (especially with getting a sense of the dimensions of the Empty squares) and didn't seem at all out of place with the blockiness of the style, as opposed to the grid in Baba is You which feels more jarring to the wobbly sketch style (though helpful in the game editor).
I'll check out the grid next time I play I think for sure! I'm still a few episodes ahead, so it won't show up for a bit. Also, next 3 episodes have pretty meh voice audio, sorry! Thanks again for commenting!
That was a lot of overthinking trying to get in the “flag is win” room after you transformed the walls into flag. 😂
Yeah! I almost slapped myself in the forehead when I realized lmao
Well, that is certainly a solution to "Ultimate Maze". Once in the "Flag is Win" room you could also gone above the key to transform the walls into key, and then push the key that's there to make "Flag is Win". Since the keys are push you can just push them out of the way and get to the flag without it transforming. You ended up thinking that transforming the walls into keys was wrong an backed out of that direction, but in the end found another way with taking advantage of the "flag on text is you" to move the flag out from the corner and transformed the walls into flags. Also the reason why there is the rule "flag on text is you" is because you wouldn't otherwise win stepping onto the flag since "lonely text is you", meaning when the text steps on the flag it wouldn't win since it is no longer lonely and thus not you. And yeah, despite having the "Level" text, Ultimate Maze does not need to be transformed into an object for the map, even though it technically is possible to do so messing with the texts on the sides. I remember watching a let's player go through a whole lotta trouble to transform it into a flag, but if you take a look in the map you'll notice there aren't any rules regarding flag, so ultimately the flag wasn't able to do anything.
Aw man, I hate that I backed out of that first solution on Ultimate Maze haha. I still really really loved that level though. Very cleverly designed and memorable. Thanks like always for commenting! We still have a big chunk of levels to go, but my confidence level is definitely going up at least haha.
You can transform Ultimate Maze into Text, and that lets you access the Write-focused batch of levels much more easily. But of course, that transformation is stupidly complicated so it's not worth it.
@@ТарасДубинин That does make the map part sound a lot more easy, but that serves it's own challenge of getting the transform from Ultimate Maze. I've gotten to the Write-focused batch of levels without it. My Ultimate Maze remains not transformed.
So I'm guessing you're further ahead than this recording, but hopefully it clicked what the "eat" gimmick was, getting A into B not by pushing A directly into B, but instead by pushing B to A such that B "eats" A, seemed like you got the hang of it/more of an intuition of it as you got further along. Also a funny thing about the recursive boxes, in some levels it is possible to push a level out of itself, resulting in an infinity paradox box.
Yeah as I've gotten further along, the infinity thing has popped up more and more on accident hahaha. Currently I'm playing through the Transfer section, about a third of the way through. :) The eating mechanics are always pretty clear in hindsight, but I occasionally still forget, especially as the levels are getting more complicated lol
Man, those recursive puzzles hurt my brain!
It's getting so difficult! I'm having fun though. I imagine it's even harder to follow as a viewer because of how often I rewind and whatnot without clearly communicating each move I do haha.
In case you haven't already solved them on your own. In Security Check, you should learn from the levels between it and VIP Area. And in Ultimate Maze, you will have to transform something into something eventually, you just have to decide what and when. Also, technically that level can be transformed with "Level" text, but it both requires a lot of extremely specific moves and is completely unnecessary for solving the overworld.
Thanks! I haven't done these yet, so I'll keep that in mind! Audio will hopefully be better next time as well
I could not beat this boss the first time I played. Unfortunately I gave up and used the built in "Character Booster", that's part of the ports of this game, so I could continue the story.
He is definitely a pain in the butt! Feels so random too, and he doesn't LOOK particularly tough either hahaha. He gives me a particularly brutal death next time that I made a little Short for.
Cloud is back! We're so back! I love that plot twist. It was mindblowing on my first playthrough!
It got me so good! It's nice finally having all of the backstory pieces coming together. :) thanks for commenting!
The learning curve was so nice an gradual... until there were two boxes. Then it just spiked upward. Nice puzzle solving! I liked the part where your set up exploded :)
Hahaha I totally forgot my setup exploded here! Thank goodness I didn't have my camera on for this series. Game is so much fun :)
hecks yeah! off to a great start. The puzzles and difficulty progression in Patrick's Parabox does appear to be a lot more tame when compared to Baba Is You. Especially since the goals are more laid out and solving them involves more of the traditional Sokoban-y block pushing puzzle-design as opposed to the rule manipulation found in Baba is You. Though the entering other boxes and recursion twist does spice things up very interestingly. I'd assume there isn't zoom controls for controller because on Mouse you click specifically which box to zoom in on, having that box be the level frame to let you peer inside of it more closely (as if you'd entered in it). And given there can be multiple of those boxes with spaces inside them, it's possible to have multiple options to pick which to zoom in on. You can even repeatedly left/right click on the recursive boxes that contain themselves to repeatedly zoom in/out.
I'm having an absolute blast with this. I feel like this game needs a bit less creativity in its problem-solving, but it's still logically pretty tough. I've recorded 4 videos for this already, and I'm already starting to slow down a bit as the complexity increases with the recursions (I'm just before the Clone section now). Thanks for watching! I also have already started recording The Witness if that interests you, videos for that start around Thanksgiving. :)
@@WeatherguyPlays Ah yes. IMO the Clone section is probably the biggest difficulty spike, at least for me it was up there. Also yeah I might be interested in The Witness. It's been sitting in my library but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Perhaps this might incentivize me to get to it.
On my first playthrough, the moment at 9:00 when Cloud wasn't in the photograph blew my mind! Also the events afterwards are pretty crazy haha. It was cool to see your reaction to these moments.
Thanks! I'm really happy that I somehow didn't see the twists coming in this story, even if a couple feel a little obvious in hindsight. Game is so good!
oops, was meaning to give a hint last video but forgot to, but you ended up getting it already pretty quickly. Also hope you get better. I've still been evading Covid because I don't want to have it in conjunction with Crohn's, which I believe has me as considered immunocompromised. Anyways, VIP Area is a tough one for me, and one I'm still not entirely sure how to express the solution for, because even if you know the objective, the execution is still pretty difficult, that honestly it felt like I was just strangling the level until something works out. I will say, that making "Keke is not Stop" would be redundant at you'd be breaking the "Keke is Stop" statement anyways to make that, and also by making "Not Keke is Stop" you also disable the "Keke is Stop" rule that way too, so really the obstacle then becomes the "Keke is Defeat". You did have the idea that getting a rock in the nook could be used to push text up and out if you could push the sentence left, but the one Keke there is in the way. It will help to recall the trick from Prison/Dungeon way back in world 2, where you had to break a "Wall is Stop" statement that was written against a wall. However, it is after you accomplish this where the real tedium of the level reveals itself, which for now I'll just say, Good Luck.
Oh yeah I remember that trick. You push the text onto the rock, and then become the rock, and then that allows you to push from within. I had a thought like that, but I just could not figure out the execution at all hahaha. Also are there any other solutions I need to explore with the second level I did in this video? It seems like the kind of level that could lead to more secrets but was unsure. Sorry about the Crohn's! I have a couple of friends with it as well. No fun
@@WeatherguyPlays I mean, it is pretty apparent from the map that there is Meta stuff going on, "Turn the Corner" seems like a reasonable candidate to have another solution to produce a level transformation.
Okay I'm at the end of this episode. Some interesting choices you made here :) I'm already making a prediction of who you're gonna end up with at the Gold Saucer, but it will depend on whether you continue making all the wrong choices with both Tifa and Aerith, lol. Don't spoil it though! I'll find out who asked your Cloud out eventually. ;)
I'd love to hear your prediction!
@@WeatherguyPlays Well I predicted Barrett, LOL. Yes, you may not believe it, but you can get a date with Barrett! There's a couple other choices, too. But actually, after watching the following ep, I'm not sure anymore. It's actually quite difficult to get the Barrett date and you have to consistently be horrible to Tifa and Aeris to get it, lol. But now I think you might get the Aeris date. We'll see :)
@@MoogieSRO Haha we'll see! I did quite enjoy the date section.
Your latest upload of this just found its way into my recommended's, so I'm here on ep 1 to start from the beginning. :) It's always great to find a new player encountering this story for the first time, and doubly rare to find one who hasn't been spoiled on anything that happens. I hope you've been enjoying it so far, and that the Steam version is treating you well - it has issues, as you may or may not have already discovered. I've only been watching for a few minutes but I'm already enjoying this, so expect to see me commenting again on later episodes when I get to them. If I don't catch up by the time you finish the game, then I'll just wish you good luck now in kicking Sephy's butt!
@@MoogieSRO This is so kind. Thank you! I actually just finished the game a couple days ago, although it's likely about 3 more weeks of uploads. Gives you plenty of time to catch up! I really enjoyed this game. The plot is great, the villain is incredible, Cloud has a great arc. Just 10/10 all around. The only other JRPG I've completed up to this point was Chrono Trigger, also on this channel, but it's just really hard for me to measure that up to how much I loved FF7. (apart from mini games hahahaha)
Biggest clutch ever
@@epicdudeisaac21 lol thanks!
KICK HIS ASS!!
Hi! I just wanted to let you know that the footage and audio gets cut off at 43:52
OH NO! Thanks I'll look into it.
Sadly, the footage for that last chunk is lost into the abyss forever, just a bad mistake in editing. :( I believe the video ends with us beginning our search for Aeris. I cut the black section, but YT said it may take a few hours to appear that way on your end.
The plot thickens! I love the lighthearted moments in this game. As well as the CG cutscenes, I think they're extremely impressive for 1997 and I still enjoy watching them today. Also... 35:34 "Planet Juice" lol
The cutscenes are definitely impressive! It really blew me away when I played FFX as a child. It was just next level, and it felt so real. I also love the lighthearted moments, there's a lot of silliness in this game for sure too. In contrast, last night I just finished recording the end of disc 1... :( Thanks for commenting!
My usual solution for Hazel Den involved waiting next to a flag and pushing Rock/Skull off it when they stacked together. Then using those stacked words to make them Push permanently. Although your way is the same it its core, I think it looks more fun!
I like your method! I always forget about trying to stack things in these puzzles. Thanks for commenting!
You solved Castle Disaster in a very smart way. I just left WIN where it was and made wall is you, then maneuvered the walls using the trees until I got the text separate from the walls and could use a few separated walls to form baba is win.
@@xian2themax Thanks! For some reason things were really clicking. Knowing my luck, next time I'll end up hard-stuck again hahaha. Your way sounds tougher, but maybe more satisfying haha. Whatever works!
Ooo, this game looks fun! I know I’m a bit late to the party here, but I’m excited to watch you play!
Oh man this is my longest ongoing series, and it looks like I'll continue having videos for it til spring at least hahaha. So there's tons of this to watch! Thank you so much for the kind comment, and I hope you enjoy my channel!
I'm eating a late dinner and just started watching this episode. Another FFVII weekend comes to a close, thanks for uploading! 😎👍
Thanks for watching, hope dinner was good!
2:20 just so you know, in the current version, there are 231 total levels in the main game.
Thanks! I think at this rate, we may hit 100 videos of this series in that case hahaha. Still having fun though, so no complaints. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
its painfull when you play it for first time, but when you discover its just get through the 4 mini zones, and figth with the boss, it gets kinda easy.
Yeah this zone definitely took me the longest hahaha. It's a pretty unique level! I remember i ran out of time multiple times while trying to navigate it lol
Great to see someone playing this blind for the first time It's a hell of a good story
I'm really liking it so far! There's such a good worldbuilding here, but I think my favorite part so far is the way tension builds when things aren't quite going your way. It really creates some dread!
You brought up the game Tunic, and it reminded me of another Zelda-esque game that actually releases today! Its called, "The Plucky Squire". It definitely caught my eye.
@@FangMagician I've definitely seen folks hyping The Plucky Squire up in a couple Discord servers I'm in! I haven't looked at it myself yet, but I'll consider it! Thanks for the reminder and the comment homie
I had a bit of trouble with the marching section my first time, I got a low rating lol
I had to cut SO much footage from my fails here hahaha. I just wasn't grasping the instructions for whatever reason. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
You ever played ff7 before? Such an amazing game
This is my first time! I've somehow also remained spoiler free apart from knowing Sephiroth is a badass hahaha.
Yo! This video was on my recommended. I'm a huge Final Fantasy VII fan! I can't wait to see your reaction to the rest of the story!!
Hey thanks! I'm having a blast with it so far. There's new videos of it every Thursday/Saturday/Sunday. :) I haven't played very many JRPGs, but I also have Chrono Trigger completed on the channel if that's your jam.
@@WeatherguyPlays Cool! Thanks for the info! I'm actually playing through Chrono Trigger right now myself, haven't beaten it yet though.
Man, don't we wish we can have abs as hard as this one? But anyways, yeah watching the vid just waiting for you to realize that you can't bring things over into the flag room, and then for you to also realize the belts only shift things over one space without something being Move. This is a bit of a tricky one, especially compared to the previous two. Though I will confirm that the AB text does work vertically, just like how the BA text from the previous level also worked vertically. It actually is possible to get all 5 belts out, but the solution is still possible with 4.
Thanks! This helps a lot. I wondered a lot about the vertical letters and just felt like too big of a pain to test it out haha. I feel like I was generally on the right track, just didn't quite piece it together. There's a lot of moving parts in this one, very tricky! Also I would definitely kill for abs this hard hahaha, haven't had abs since the Air Force.
On Scale you don't actually have to completely worry about trying to not end up to the left of Skull, considering "Not Rock is Not You" stops the Skull anyways, letting you get back to the right of it again. What you can't recover from is the Skull going too far right that is breaks the win statement. This one has multiple solutions, as you also could've formed "Baba is You" sharing the same YOU text instead of turning Baba into a rock. Another method doesn't even need the "Not Rock is Not You" sentence, with enough finessing of breaking and remaking YOU statements, it is possible to work your way spacing things apart horizontally enough to sink the water and get the flag out. For Lunar Gallery it seem what was intended is that you are to melt the skulls to get the letter "T" out to then make "Not Baba is Push" to push the walls, but I guess it wasn't considered that you could still make that same sentence flush against the floor like you did without having to melt the skulls. So you managed to solve it while bypassing a step. @29:47 This is another instance where the text shimmying technique could move the text down more efficiently. Where instead of taking the text over and circling around to the other side, you just push the same type of text through the statement to the other side. It can be difficult when unaccustomed to the technique to recognize when you can apply it since inclination makes it feel as though you are breaking the sentence, but since the text being supplemented in is the same or otherwise keeps you alive, it's safe to do and keeps you on one side. With practice one can move sentences down rows/columns pretty quickly with this technique, and it can also work in corridors too narrow to let you circle around.
The text shimmying thing is so obvious, and I don't know why I keep forgetting that I can do that lol. It would definitely make things more efficient. Thanks like always for your comments! I felt good about today. Next week... not so good!
First! ;) Very enjoyable watching you play. Game is amazing as well. Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks! I'm having a blast with it so far. I really fell in love with this game when I died for the first time, but I don't think that video will be out for a couple more weeks. Thanks for commenting!
Great job making it this far! I’m also impressed nobody spoiled it for you.
@@xian2themax Thanks for the compliment and the comment!
It’s amazing that no one spoiled it to you about it after a year. Hahaha! I guess you can say that a map is a level, and a level is a map.
@@Psycho_Hazard Yeah I gotta say the commenters on my Baba is You videos have easily been the best across all my content. Y'all are all gems!

Indeed it has! I feel like the challenge is going to ramp up even more. Thanks for commenting, and thanks again for stopping by the live stream the other day. :)
Keep grinding bro!
Glad to see you finish the epilogue
Thanks! I'm glad I finished it too
Are you ever planning on doing a true pacifist run? There is a ton more content, new areas and bosses if you correctly befriend everyone. And no, you aren’t locked out or anything just because you didn’t spare flowey the first time, you can in fact still do it from this run without having to do the rest of the game again. You just have to walk back to Papyrus’s house and do the papyrus hangout, then do the Undyne hangout, then talk to Alphys and the new content will begin.
I will likely revisit doing a true pacifist one, but it likely won't be until I also complete Deltarune. I don't plan on playing Deltarune until it fully releases, so it may be a while! I think the big thing that kept me back from trying a True Pacifist run at the time was I was a pretty big purist as far as not looking things up, only doing on VERY rare occasions. I think if I revisit though, I'll use a guide for True Pacifist. Thanks or commenting/watching my videos! :)
@@WeatherguyPlays Glad to hear you’ll be doing it eventually. Assuming you still have the save file from the end of this video, it’s about 2.5 hours total of playtime to get through all of the new content.
You actually can die during the omega flowey fight, VERY impressive that you didn’t die even once, you’re the only youtuber I’ve seen who’s done it
Thanks so much! I definitely struggled in other parts of my playthrough though haha, especially with Asgore pacifist.
27:12 that’s because that’s actually where Toby Fox made the sound for his voice from.
oh that's awesome! Thanks for sharing.
'If only there was a way to get interest on that' Funny you should say that, actually... because there IS a way to get interest. Unsure if you'll discover that since I know you dont end up using the bank much but we'll see
Doh! I wish I knew that hahaha. One of my favorite things in games is being able to invest something and let it grow
@@WeatherguyPlays Yeah so if you give her the max amount, she runs off with your money, but you can find her and get it back, and when you do you get back more than what you put in. So its kind of a one time thing, but it exists!
Yessir!! Whens the next live stream?
Unsure! It'll probably be on a whim sometime in the next week. I'll try to give a bit of notice if I can hahaha
"I need like, a geo bank." The game has anticipated this need xD
Spoilers, but I proceed to hardly ever use it!
Starting to get towards the meta-game, we got a baba on da map. It is worth noting that while the level is transformed into a baba, it is still a level, but now it can move around. In order to enter levels you need the cursor to get there, which can only travel on paths and levels. Also you can tell you've beaten a transformed level as it will have a pink outline (18:28). 2:53 you can simplify/speed up this shimmying process by pushing the "is" through the other "is" instead of taking it over and around to the other side. 7:08 the reason why the level gets destroyed is because there is "Wall is defeat" as well as "Door is defeat", so when the level becomes "You" it gets defeated by these objects as they are in contact with the level. As for "Hostile Environment", it is worth noting that "Level is Defeat" doesn't destroy the level, it simply makes the level deadly to anything that is "You" while the level is defeat. Consider what you can do with "Has" and "Weak", as well as utilizing "Move".
Thanks for the tips! I think I grasped the wall is defeat/door is defeat things, but might have failed to articulate it. I've already recorded next week's video as well, and minor spoilers, but I do quite well! Thanks like always for commenting keylime :)
I need to play this game again..
I feel bad that you didn't find the shortcut and/or the bench that's right below the Hornet arena. That was a long walk between your bench and the arena. xD
Ohhhh yeah, that would've been nice! Usually the runbacks to boss battles are pretty simple because of benches nearby. I should've thought to look more carefully!
