Although not a medically recognized term, post-grad depression is the unfortunate reality for some recent graduates, including myself, so i wanted to dive deeper into this unknown phenomenon and share a bit of my story. As a former foster youth, this is supposed to be such a joyous time for me. But, I honestly just don’t care. I’m only happy that I don’t have to flex my work schedule 😅 I didn’t have the college experience you’re supposed to have because I was working and attending Uni full time. I have been in nonprofit work for at least 4-5 years…working my way up…and it’s been such an experience working with my kiddos. But now as I approach graduation…I’m starting to question things and thinking maybe I’m supposed to do something different, but I don’t know what because I’ve only been in roles where I’m supporting others. I’ve been surviving trying to make sure I had stable housing.

I'm nineteen, I just graduated high school (in Germany) yesterday and i simply feel insanely sad to be leaving all this behind me. I know that a new chapter of my life is starting now but I'm not ready to leave this one behind yet. The school I was at was the first school I felt 100% comfortable at with the greatest teachers one could ever ask for. I feel like I'm leaving too early, like I could've learned a lot more from them and like I'm missing out on this opportunity now. I know this whole you gotta lose something to gain something thing is true at the end of the day, and I know that there are tons of great options what i can do with my life now but i can't deny that it kinda hurts to see my childhood coming to an end. But for now I'm gonna work in a hospital for a year (maybe less if I manage to get into medicine this October), let's see how that goes.

I’m ngl I graduated 2 years early due to getting my associates in high school through a program and my experience was cut a year short due to covid where I had to move home. It’s been 2 years since I graduated and I still struggle really bad. I don’t have any friends in my hometown, I’ve gained weight, I have a full time job that feels like a dead end. It’s such a stark contrast to the healthy, social, spontaneous life I was living in college and I don’t think I’ll ever get it back. It’s so hard to get into the full time working adult lifestyle. I struggle everyday with jealousy over others, low self esteem, depression, and anxiety. I have talked to others about this and they feel the same and I’m surprised it’s not talked about more.

I'm 19, just graduated from high school and this really hit home, because I have NO IDEA what I want to do now, I literally cannot see myself as a college Student nor as a working adult, I just cannot image myself in any position, I'm just stuck. I dont know if I want to go to college or what I want to study or what I want to do with my life. I'm stuck between feeling to stupid to do anything and wanting to feel relevant with what I do, because thinking about having a deadend job for the rest of my life makes me indescribably sad. I'm even too scared to talk to people about this or going to therapy I feel like it doesnt matter whether I'm here or not

I went into my undergrad years of college feeling this way (my parents were neglectful & didn't explain why paying attention in class can be fun so I never understood how work can be fun. Plus, I watched a lot of TV instead of studying up until college, so I falsely believed the world could be as magical as Narnia or whatever stuff I glued my eyes to). I don't know what your backstory is, so definitely take my opinion with a grain of salt, and I'm sure you worked harder than me to get where you are. Maybe consider a gap year before college and job shadowing during that time. The only way I knew what I wanted to do was through job shadowing in high school AND college. If you choose a 4 year college, you won't have to make a decision on your major right away, and while you're taking your core classes (classes that most majors are required to have within thr first 2 semesters), you can have time to figure out what you want. If you choose community college, you'll save so much money but it's best to know what you want before that because you'll have less time to make a decision (cause the majors require less time to complete). And of course, you could not go to any college or trade school after high school. Just make sure whatever you do, you make time to think over what you really want in life and how to make a sustainable amount of money via your lifestyle. After being an intern and student, I believe every job is depressing because there's less breaks than students are used to, and it takes time to accustom to. Similar to how kindergarteners cry for their parents when they arrive to their classroom. It takes time. I know I feel depressed about work life despite loving my career path, because I am still processing how to think realistically about the world and stop believing I can escape reality by binging TV and escaping chores & schoolwork or work work. As humans, all we do is work (whether it's an 8-6 or literally washing dishes or cooking). It may sound pessimistic, but that's just how it is. What makes life worth it in my opinion is the friends you make along the way! With the right people in my life, work feels less depressing to me! It's hard to do any transition, whether it's from having less stress on career choices in high school to more in college or from having more free time as a college student to less after graduating and getting a career. I think learning how to become accustomed to our stressors is how we find happiness in spite of it all. As humans, change is scary and it's normal to feel scared of a new life, but we are also adaptable. It's in our DNA. Even our hunter gatherer ancestors were constantly adapting to changes and facing conflicts daily. These quotes help me: "We can spend our whole life suffering because we can’t relax with how things really are, or we can relax and embrace the open-endedness of the human situation, which is fresh, unfixated, unbiased." ~Pema Chödrön "The difference between an unwise person and a wise person lies in how they respond to pain, not in whether or not they achieve an absence of pain" ~Vidyamala Burch

I graduated in 2020 and I'm still unemployed. I'm white so it's not a minority problem. The problem is the system. I did research for 5 years, but did not learn anything about starting a career. I left college in the same position I was in when I started except I had an expensive piece of paper. To add insult to injury, I graduated in 2020 so there was never a graduation and my college University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) printed the wrong degree. They refuse to correct their mistake even though when you look at my transcripts their mistake is undeniable in black and white ink.

Hello Andy! Love the Video! I FELT THIS! Graduated with my masters degree, thankfully I had a job but I got hired for a dream job right after graduating and I thought I made it. Pandemic hit, and they laid off 800 employees and I was the last one in and also the first one out, I’m sure. I applied for so many jobs and I was “overqualified” and I kept getting so many rejections stating “unfortunately, we found a candidate who better met our needs, we wish you well” and it was just..... I was like WOW, I did ALL that, for this? I was in a very dark place mentally. Everything happens for a reason, I’d like to think. I self-reflected, gave myself some goals, and practiced a lot of self-care. Although a doctorates seems achievable, I will not be going back to school. Thankfully, I was recalled and I am working now but I am also preparing myself to be with a woman with a title, so that the next time they decide to let this #firstgen go, they will think twice about it when they see the credentials that follow. ❤️ just my little two cents.
