Thank you, glad you appreciate the vids!
I'm still so stoked the XForce movie (deadpool 2) was way better a teamup movie than any of the avengers films (Age of ultron came pretty close to being good though for an actual Avengers movie as a long time fan of the comics as a kid
That final Liefeld cover is inked by "Paul Scott" - which is just a pen name that Rob used. In this issue, the vague credits always said to me that Rob provided layouts at most - this is largely not his artwork.
Yeah I think mostly the faces are his... My buddy Rob Norton recently mentioned that Scott was a Liefeld pseudonym, news to me, but makes sense, it does look exactly like when he's inking himself
thats definitely his work on the cover though for sure.
@@WildFungus absolutely
I got that issue.
For me Todd was as close to Kirby as we have ever seen. The iconic covers, the dynamic shots everything. They also both had anatomy and face issues but it was so cool looking we don't care. Fun fact the founder's had Kirby's blessings to start Image according to jim Valentino. Todd actually wanted to each comic to say Jack Kirby presents but Valentino said he's not asking him for that.
A Maxx comic with no Maxx in it 😂
I know right?
Oh, with the latter part of the issue apart from deadlines and saving time by blacking out most of the characters and backgrounds I always assumed it was Rob buttering people up for the Mignola fill-in next issue.
Interesting that you compared Capullo with Silvestri as I noted early on (when Cap was on X-Force) that his mastery of anatomy and his framing of storytelling reminded me a lot of Silvestri as well.
Yes they definitely have a similar compositional style, very dynamic, and less rigid and posed than say, Jim Lee. Ultimately, Silvestri would end up following the Jim Lee esthetic for a while there in the 90s and beyond...
I like Marc Silverstri's characters a lot better than Jim Lee's. Cyber Force had a better aesthetic than Wildcats. Let's be honest, some of the Wildcats looked stupid and had dumb powers. Warblade with his dumb costume and Maul got dumber as he got bigger. I mean some of the Cyber Force members were generic too but they were well written.
I would say the writing on Cyberforce was only slightly better than on WildC.A.T.S., but I definitely agree with you that the character designs are better overall. Both are somewhat derivative of the X-Men and other characters from Marvel and DC (Maul is Hulk, Zealot is Wonder Woman, Ripclaw and Warblade are Wolverine, etc.), but Silvestri at least had a unifying theme to the team, where Jim Lee's designs were all over the place
Like your work, man. I haven't seen many people point out the weird Xs on some of this issue's inks before - it doesn't stick around but I never suspected this wasn't pretty much all Rob trying something new. Nicieza from memory is pronounced "nih-see-ay-zah", and the colourist is "Boo-chell-ah-tow".
Thank you for the input, I really do appreciate it! Thanks also on the pronunciation!
Cool you keep pulling out these older awesome books
Glad you like it!!! Stay tuned...
tiger shark looks a lot like savage dragon! especially now that Larsen's recent style is heavily Kirby inspired now.
Agreed! The resemblance is definitely there...
Mike Mignola brought us Hellboy. He's the 🐐
Mike Mignola, man... ❤
Dude, how is it up there in Montreal? I heard y'all got some hot babes up there 😁
Hahahah sure do! Just not a big fan of winter myself...
@Kingcomics2021 same here man. I'm from Chicago 🥶
Yo, back when I was on DeviantArt, I used to fancast comic book movies. I found the perfect French actress to play Cyblade. I still have those fancasts saved on my laptop 💻
I had this issue back in the day but most of my comics got stolen from my friend's storage when I lived in AZ (long story). I'm thinking about getting the re-prints when I get some money 🤑
Check the dollar bins, you can find most of those early IMAGE issues there...
@Kingcomics2021 cool. We actually have $1 and 50 cent bins at my comic stores here in Chicago 😎
@@MrDman21 lucky!!! Here in Canada, no bins under 1$ anywhere...
Shout out to @robertnorton12013 👍🏽
I was reading the Peter David and Jeff Purves Incredible Hulk in the 80's. It was not my favorite Marvel Comic book at the time. But then Dale Keown took over on art duties, and Incredible Hulk became my favorite Marvel comic book at that moment.
Yes, the art is what sold it for me!
What transpired at the end of Maxx vs Pitt when Pitt saw all the white isz that looked like Timmy? Did they even continue at all where that left off because it seemed like Pitt was about to go crazy and hurt Maxx because he wouldn't help him when he was hanging off the cliff. Was that when Maxx flew away? And after that the storyline with pitt is just done?
Basically, yeah... It was always a weird series, and that's another of its weird aspects. The joke at the time is that PITT was doing more guest appearances in other IMAGE comics than actual appearances in his own comic! My opinion? His appearance in these other titles has more to do with PITT'S graphic appeal more than anything else... These guys just wanted to draw this cool looking character
@@Kingcomics2021 I remember reading "Maxx vs. Pitt" comic 20 years ago and always wondered what happened because there was such an intense cliffhanger - literally. It set it up as if Pitt was going crazy and would try and kill Maxx, or maybe they'd fight. My inner child always did want to know how the story was continued and just before I watched your video I had almost bought the issue on amazon. Your video saved me from 2 things, wasting my money and massive amounts of disappointment. Seriously. I legit would've been upset lol "After 20 years of thinking about what was gonna happen and that's it???" Thanks.
@@InfraMiG no problem!
Absolutely love the Keon, and really the whole Peter David, run. I'd strongly disagree about PD and the definitive Hulk storylines were all written by David. Now, at times he could get into a very Stephen King kind of....over generalization with his characters. I'm not sure how anyone could say it' doesn't hold up.
Again, more power to you if you're into Peter David, that's all cool! Just not for me...
Rob Liefeld is a talentless hack and this comic is garbage.
I’ve collected all the Keown Hulk issues in the past couple years. I love the art, but the Peter David writing does not hold up at all. Really cheesy dialog, kind of a slog to actually read. It’s weird that he was considered a great writer back then.
I totally agree! Our tastes were probably a little less discerning as kids hahaha! But yeah, I mostly cover these for the art, which is excellent
Missing out. The story got better in my opinion
Yes, I know it's some people's favorite Maxx stuff, just not for me... Different strokes for different folks, right?
dude these are great! should do a weekly drawing timelapse
Thank you! Not a bad idea, I've got a few in the bank as well...
From one artist to another, love your analysis! Hope your channel blows up bro!
Thanks for the kind words man! ''If you build it, they will come''!
I remember in one of the MTV episodes the Maxx was a bunny rabbit...😅
Yes that's coming up in the series as well
Probably the most shocking comic i had ever read at this point
As a kid? Absolutely
Great book. Great art. Great review
Thanks man!
I think the difference is the depiction of violence, not gore, although there are limits there too. With the Juggy panel, the sword was piercing the eye. These panels here show blood without that violence, like the aftermath. That's the difference. It's not about the blood. It's about the depiction of bodily/bloody harm.
I get it, but I'm still surprised at these weird editing edicts from Marvel
Just stumbled upon your video and subbed. Thanks for mentioning the Byrne influence on Keown's art - I don't think it's noticed enough; the Byrne is very strong in his work for a long, long time.
Thanks for subscribing! Check out my early KEOWN reviews of Dragonring to see the more obvious Byrne influence
Did you notice during the ‘flashback’ sequence that they were mocking the Clark Kent / Superman glasses thing? Maybe that’s why they chose the Byrne-esqe style?
Nice catch! I hadn't noticed, actually...
McFarlane's art is amazing. Marvel never could replace the image guys. The modern dislike of this era I never understood.
Art is subjective, but I'm definitely down with McFarlane's style!
@Kingcomics2021 I would say much of the art today is by and large worse. You have some good artists for sure but many are just hired because they are cheap. I say this as an artist. Many left the industry because everything paid better sadly.
??
!!
Great review. Tho. THO.. you lost me for a few seconds when you say you love curse of spawn. To me.: that is among the worst, stupidest comics ive ever read in my life and i hate everything about the concept. Arts fine but coloring was awful. Haha. Sorry. But seriously. I HATE that series. Railed on it in a video on my channel. BUT. Thats just me. Also.. i need to find this new wolverine series.
Hahaha we all have different opinions, which I'm all for... I understand your criticisms about Curse of The Spawn, the coloring, it's very wordy, but to me, that first story arc is one of the most brutal, gory and horrific stories I have ever read... I really like it for those aspects especially. Of course the art is amazing... I actually purchased the black and white trade months ago from seeing your review of it. Didn't even know it existed, so thanks!
Good Vid. I'd like to be like Capullo when I grow up.
Wouldn't we all? Such a great artist, and he plays a mean metal guitar!
@@Kingcomics2021 I saw that. I build some custom guitars on my page. I may have to do a Capullo Flying V at some point.
@@GuitarlordJohnBurton that would be pretty damn awesome!
Venture Bros. Vibes from this rendition
Thank you!!! I was definitely going for an animation esthetic...
Mike Slavko (aka M Dung), a radio DJ on KFOG in San Francisco, was the inspiration for Dung and his speech patterns.
Nice! These are the kinds of deep facts I'm looking for! Thanks a lot man
I think you are correct on just about everything
Thanks man! This issue has always stood out to me for all the reasons mentioned here...
I loved 90s comics. By the early 2000s, I rarely purchased them. Post Dinsey's purchase in 2010, I dropped off completely.
The only modern comics I purchase are almost all from the world of the independents...
Love Jim Lee's art. Got a question for you as a newbie. I bought the Art of Jim Lee book by DC. First thing you notice about his figure work is the massive rib cage with the pec muscles smaller. The ribs are almost a stand in for pecs at times with those top two abs that attach to the ribs being both massive and undefined at the same time. Makes the figures always look like they're the absolute cock of the walk at all times. Looks like he was doing it in the earlier stuff here also. My question is, is that derivative or someone else's work or is that really a Jim Lee thing? Thanks.
I feel like he got it from Art Adams and Barry Windsor Smith
I appreciate this coverage :)
Thank you!
Great!
Some great nostalgia value!
When speaking of Erik’s body fluid characters you can’t fail to mention Heavy Flo!
Respect to heavy flo
Hahaha absolutely
I took my first step into a comic shop about a month ago at the age of 45. Fell in love immediately. Not even so much with the comics but with the fans. It was like 11 am on a Tuesday and there were like 15 people in there all buying and obsessing about physical merch. I thought those days were gone. It reminded me of the days of Specs music and buying actual CD's and tapes. I said, I may need to check this stuff out. I'm finding comics to be a fantastic way to tell a story. Probably superior to TV or Movie format even. There's just something sleek about the delivery. Anyhow, I'm actually reading the original Ronin now and loving it. I would have loved to have seen a 1980's John Carpenter make the movie. Really enjoying your content. Thanks.
Thanks you so much for the kind words! I love your story here, and am glad you appreciated the vibe only a comic store can give you today in 2024, the old school vibe that used to be present, like you said, in music stores, video stores, etc... Glad to have you aboard!!!
Please don't tear me a new hole,Big Baby. I honestly believe that I already have the perfect amount of them.
Josef Rubenstein. I liked his inks on many artists, but Farmer and McCleod looked better on Keown to me in general. I think this issue is his best over Keown.
Agreed!
Thank you for sharing
You bet!
Daniel Henriques is the inker
I really like Wild Dragon. Here in Brazil it was a good success.
