This is a famous solitary performance. Montserrat had just enjoyed a special 25th anniversary gala at the Barcelona Liceo and the next day received an anguished phone call from La Scala: Eva Marton was ill and could not sing Salome. So she flew to Milan, rehearsed for 48 hours with Kent Nagano and Robert Wilson, and here is the result. She chews some lines and plays with the tempo (as was her bad habit in this latter part of her career) but otherwise does an admirable job!

Ghastly on most counts. Zampieri cannot sing her way out of a wet paperbag if any fioritura is involved. Listen to the cabaletta Carlo vive! Not even an attempt at the written trills. and some of the sloppiest passagework I have ever heard. Vetdi wtote this fir Jenny Lind, so why did Zampieri take it upon herself to butcher it?

La sua piu' bella recita di Aida e brava la Parutto.

Thank you so much for this treasure trove of recordings of one of my favourite sopranos. What a wonderful discovery this podcast is. Thank you so much for your efforts. I first heard Harwood sing Casta Diva on the soundtrack to the film Atlantic City and was immediately hooked.

Wow! I had heard of her but haven't listened to her much. A very personal timbre. I also like very much the voice of the speaker. You can tell that it is a voice that belongs to someone who understands classical music.

No artist holds any bad memories of their experience with #KatiaRicciarelli in their heart. Today, it is very sad to find on UA-cam a tremendous flood of hate, harsh criticism, and people hiding behind false nicknames attacking the Primadonna mercilessly. #KatiaRicciarelli was a lyric soprano, though not purely lyric. There were nights when she sang more like a lyric-spinto soprano, and it wasn’t due to a lack of technique. It was simply a characteristic of her voice; she could even sing the lightest coloratura thanks to her solid technique. Let's clarify a difference: for example, #JoanSutherland and #LucianoPavarotti seemed like they were born to sing together, thanks to the ease with which both produced sound, comfortably and effortlessly, even reaching high notes with astonishing ease. On the other hand, #KatiaRicciarelli and #JoséCarreras had voices where the emission was strained-not because of bad technique, I repeat-but their high notes were produced with a slow vibrato and with considerable effort. It was simply a characteristic of their voices. Some say that voices with effortless emission tend not to move people, whereas those with strained emission do. Whatever the case, today, #Katia's career, with its triumphs and its less successful nights, has already come to an end. For better or for worse, her career is over-she is now an older lady. So, at the very least, for all the good she gave us, let’s maintain an attitude of respect. What could she be accused of? Choosing parts of her repertoire poorly? What soprano hasn’t fallen into that sin? At least for the years she has left, if you don't like her, show some respect, and if you really don’t like her, simply don’t listen to her. I know her personally, as I was the assistant during the filming of Otello. Never in my life have I met anyone so generous-a magnificent person and an admirable human being. Dear Katia, many years have passed since then, but I still carry in my heart the beautiful memory of having met you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks for a tribute, but here are a few corrections (for a clarification). 1) She was born on May 28th. 2) She never sang at the MET, but about to made a debut on 13th December 1969 as Lady Macbeth in Verdi's "Macbeth". 3) Her last performance as soprano happend on 23rd November 1975 in San Savero as Tosca 4) She passed away on 4th December in 2004. Thanks a lot for your work!

Vielen Dank für diese anregende/ aufregende Erfahrung. Ab dem ersten Moment hatte ich das irritierende Gefühl, nur den Ton eines Kinofilms aus den späten dreissiger bis zur Mitte der sechziger Jahre zu hören, während die Leinwand oder der Bildschirm schwarz bleibt. Von Beginn an bin ich aber so hypnotisch gefesselt, dass ich es nicht schaffe den Film abzuschalten. Die grandiose Magda Olivero schafft es wieder, obwohl manirierte Gesangsmittel benutzend, beim Hörer über den "Verismo" den Eindruck eines tatsächlichen realistischen Geschehens zu erwecken.
