Regarding the comment between Calvin and Zwingli during the sermon, that men are more complex than what they are caricatured to say, (in a type of shorthand), it was stated that John Calvin believed the Lord's Supper was more than remembering, it was also receiving of grace. If Calvin made that distinction, was it true that Zwingli stopped short? Did Zwingli consider any spiritual blessing in the partaking of the Lord's Supper, or was it only an act of remembrance?
The caricatured postions are that Zwingli saw the Lord's Supper purely in terms of memorial and that the elements were bare signs, and that Calvin saw the Lord's Supper as a means of grace and that Christ was really but spiritually present in the elements. Both Zwingli and Calvin expressed themselves with Luther in mind. Away from the polemic, Zwingli did speak of a spiritual feeding. Calvin's view of the Lord's Supper was thought to be confusing by Hodge, Dabney, and Cunningham. So, Zwingli's and Calvin's actual positions are more complex than is usually described. After the death of Zwingli and once it was clear that the gap between the Lutherans and the Swiss Reformed could not be bridged, Calvin and Bullinger worked together to compose the Consensus Tigurinus which, bridging the gap between Zurich and Geneva, became the Reformed position.
Thank you, Rev. Gebbie. I took a look at the 26 articles by Calvin and Bulinger in the Consensus Tigurinus. Very interesting. I'll keep them in mind the next time I go to Lord's Supper. The Lord's blessings upon your work there in Chesley. @@DavidGebbie
Excellent sermon on, Give us this day our daily bread. Interesting history on daily gathering, yet, as Rev. Gebbie points out, daily gathering is not prescribed, rather the daily giving of thanks.
An excellent sermon warning about the dangers of legalism, that is, the law without Christ.
How spiritually refreshing it is to hear about the temptation of our Lord, how perfectly he endured temptation, and passed the test that we might be granted grace in this life and before His throne.
We greatly appreciate and are spiritually built up in knowledge and wisdom through access to viewing and listening to the straight-forward worship of God. Lord willing, when the weather and road conditions improve, we hope to join with you in worship. May the Lord continue to bless Chesley Presbyterian Reformed Church. Matthew Ottaway
