      @@lucysaunders4051 hey Lucy, the video goes through everything that is in and out of the networth. It take a little bit of time to explain as some of it is more contentious and a lot of what we think about as something that will not look after you in retirement is what people traditionally think of as an asset. Thank you for the feedback. The video does explain if you keep going and in the next version in 2025 we will work to bring it forward.

    Fabulous thank you for sharing! Am I missing something - is it better to have money sat in, say a General Interest Account - (I have a Trading 212 ISA) and to leave it as uninvested cash and gain interest until able to buy more stocks (bed n isa?) - is this more tax effective than say holding the cash in a bank with the same amount of interest, a bit unsure about this? Many thanks!

    Aw, Canada does not seem very competitive compared to USA or UK. It has no capital gains allowance. 50% of capital gains are taxed, regardless of the amount, even if it is only $100, you would pay the tax on $50. Then, for anything above $250K, the tax is 66.67% or 2/3.

    At 41 minutes you explained how increasing the withdraw rate lowers how much one needs to save. That thinking is different than mine since I think about increasing the withdraw rate (e.g., 4 to 5%) to have a higher spending amount (e.g., $40k to $50k per year) and thus the amount saved stays the same e.g., $1,000,000. I understand your thinking though too.

    When you talk about investment/investing, I'm assuming you are talking about the stock market somehow. So lets say you buy 1 share for $100. I don't see how that compounds (lets assume no dividend, for ease.) If you leave the stock in the market for 20 years, you still have 1 share after 20 years. Sure, the price of that stock might have gone up (or even down), but I don't see any compounding or 'growth on the growth'. A price increase, hopefully, but no compounding in the traditional sense. Why? because you still have 1 share. Just because there is a price change, this does not equate to compounding. IMO, there is a subtle difference. Compounding would be, say, putting something like $100 into a 5% per annum interest bearing account. After 1 year you have $105. Then you put the $105 back in to the interest bearing account for another year, at 5% to get $110.25. The $5 from the first year has itself grown in the second year; that's compounding. I don't see how compounding happens in the stock market; its a price change. Any thoughts? (Edited to tidy a few typos)

    • @rebeldonegans
      @rebeldonegans 8 днів тому

      @@JC-welliz JC thanks for your message and love your thoughts. Compounding works on many things. Mostly the example we use is the stock market as we primarily own low cost index funds I am not sure why you rule out dividends at the start of your message. Most shares pay dividends. You buy a unit of an index fund that owns many companies around the world. That goes up in value and produces dividends. With an accumulation unit of a dividend those dividend are reinvested buying you more units and there for more shares. The next year you have more shares that bring in more dividends that are reinvested to buy even more. Therefor the whole thing compounds over time. What was the reason you said let’s assume no dividends? That’s one of the things that makes the compounding work in the stock market! Alan

    • @JC-welliz
      @JC-welliz 8 днів тому

      @@rebeldonegans Hi Alan, thanks for the reply. I assumed no dividend yield simply for ease and to avoid ambiguity in my calcs. I'm not sure you can say most shares pay dividends - some, yes. Even factoring in dividends (S&P 500 avg yield is approx 1%) the change in price of your asset (lets assume its a growth-based change in price as opposed to a decline.) is due to growth, not compounding. They are different and I think are confused in your video. Your article seems to suggest all the growth from comes from compounding; it does not. If you have an accumulation fund or dividend paying investment then yes, some will, but it is nowhere to the level you suggest in your article. The majority of the growth comes from growth, not compounding of dividends. cheers

    • @rebeldonegans
      @rebeldonegans 8 днів тому

      Hey JC I am curious how are you defining compounding? I would love to know what this word means to you then I can think it through and engage more. What is your definition of compounding?

    • @JC-welliz
      @JC-welliz 8 днів тому

      @@rebeldonegans Hi Alan Compounding = reinvestment, resulting in an increase to the number of UNITS of the underlying asset. Growth = an increase in PRICE of the underlying asset The low-cost funds that you often mention in your channel achieve the bulk of their price change through growth in the price, not compounding of the underlying asset. Over and out from me on this one!
