RESPONSE TO NIGHTSTALKERCK - There was a difference in price between ALL 1949 Series I and Series II Chrysler Corpoation cars for each division, wherein the Series II models had a price increase to help offset the cost of retooling. My parents bought their first brand new car in April 1949, four months before I was born. It was a 1949 Series II, Code P18 (118.5 inch wheelbase) Plymouth Special DeLuxe (top-of-the-line model) 4 door sedan in black Acrylustre exterior paint with a gray mohair interior, and simulated wood grain metal dash and interior window trim. The MSRP base price was $1,629.00 and about 63,000+ units were sold. It was the most popular/highest production model produced within the Series II Plymouth division. Standard items for this model on my parents' car included steering column mounted turn signals, an ignition key that started the car, an automatic choke on the 1 BBL Carter caruretor, and a center high mount third stoplight on the exterior trunk lid above the trunk handle. ALL THESE ITEMS first ever offered as STANDARD for safety/convenience; to eliminate the dash or floor mounted starter button; and dash mounted hand choke still used on all Ford and most GM cars well into the 1950s. The one year ONLY inside hood release on the left side of the lower dash/to the right of the hand brake was NOT OFFERED ON ANY OTHER CAR - EVEN CADILLACS OR LINCOLNS UNTIL 1973! The center high mount third stoplight was NOT AVAILABLE ON ANY MODEL OF ANY AMERICAN CAR UNTIL 1978/1979! Options my parents ordered were wide white sidewall rayon tires, exterior windshield sun visor (banned by law in the early 1950s), amber fog lights, outside spotlight on the left side windshield A-pillar, backup lights, a locking gas cap, five tube AM radio (most expensive radio available), heater and defroster. [Backup lights through the late 1960s, heater through the late 1970s; and a radio through the 2000s were extra cost options.] As for the MSRP base price of the 1949 Series II De Soto, depending on model, it was aporoximately $2,200.00, excluding extra cost options; which was more expensive than the Dodge. Chryslers MSRP was around $2,600.00 for the least expensive Windsor, up to an MSRP near $3,000.00 for the top-of-the-line New Yorker, excluding extra cost options.

In the 70s I owned three 56 Oldsmobiles, a black 4 dr post, two 2 door hardtops, one white, the other red and white. Olds brought out in 56 the hydramatic jetaway auto trans which shifted far smoother than the hydramatics of previous years. The 56 324 V8 was higher compression and some other tweaks, it got with the program, compared to the 324 V8 in 54 and 55 Olds. I found the car to be unusually stylish and it got about 17 mpg highway driving, good for a big, powerful car. You might also appreciate I am originally from Portland, Oregon and moved to Texas some time ago. The 56 Olds has got to be one the best Olds offerred.

Being an original fanatic that’s one beautiful car. Someone is going to get a great car. I’m like you. Take care of it, maintain it and possibly keep it as a collector car. I own a 66 all original, numbers matching, 383 4bbl I bought off the original owner in 1978. To answer your question. The carpet in the trunk was factory and matched the interior carpet. The trunk area in that car is almost excellent.
