MODERN APPEARANCE " Aesthetic of the Flat Facade " I JAP CHAT I
So you think you’re an architect? I hope you’re good at it and equally good at the host of other things, like a ‘renaissance man’. Like Alberti in 15th century Italy who was a historian, theoretician etc and who took up the problem of ‘facade’ in architecture and laid out a theoretical framework based on which, designed and constructed many buildings
Of course, most of us architects can only hope to be somewhat closer to where Alberti stands. But the importance of becoming a master of all, was strongly established back in the Bauhaus days where students had to graduate from other art and design majors to become eligible for study of architecture.
Based on the appearance we pass the verdict whether a building is ugly or beautiful. Appearance is surely not limited to exterior in case of an architecture. It continues to the interior. What appears is, is the surface of the building; usually the vertical. The floor plan of a building as a horizontal plane is more about use and efficiency, on which we move or travel. Architects are often perplexed by how a perfectly nice plan could look so ugly as a building! I believe this is where Alberti comes in. It is the facade. Facade that is anchored in its interior and uses. This is where I would express the importance for an architect, if not a renaissance man, at least be able to appreciate the wonder of art and science, sports, culture, and nature.
In this episode, I would like to (appreciate) talk about some of the objects of design that demonstrate modernity, timelessness, efficiency, and beauty.

Modern architecture often emulates the tragic eventuality of the aging (movie/rock) star with the arrival of the young faces. Architecture though does not age the same way humans do, but the razzle dazzle of the contemporary architecture soon turns into sputter with arrival of glittering new building. In the matter of just 35 years, an award-winning modern building struggle for survival forget ...
NO APOLOGY " On Being Critical "
Переглядів 636Місяць тому
One of the important fields of study for architect, regarding form and facade is, 'how things are similar'? I don't mean stamp or mirror image by similar. For example, why do some individual looks like a lion? How come eighty-six years old grandmother reflects on the newborn baby girl? In the likeness is creativity. Every building is toiling with that notion of, 'similar but not the same' to ac...

Wonderful insights
👍
Hello sir, I can't thank you enough for this and other insightful videos on JAP CHAT. I love to hear about everything you say here and relate to it. But I always have this question buzzing in my mind "Does Nepal really want architect's service?" I feel like architecture is a form of art and people will only want art if their basic needs are upto mark. I feel lost somewhere in this chaos of commercial market and real architecture practice. Can you please pour some light to this topic as well.. Always your big fan..
👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the awareness
Well depicted. But then showing recent pic of MOHP building with the added floor to sketch out the damage done to Louis I Kahn would have done the justice.
One more thing: You must have had quite a few students who studied under you. How come no one writes their view? Don't they have anything to say/contribute? Or do they wholeheartedly, 100% agree with you (you know, being in Nepal, guru chela dynamics... Maybe I am wrong)???
I enjoyed your talk on Modern Architecture. From watching this episode, I gathered that the life span of a modern building is often very short. Yet, there are some that stand the test of time. I imagine that all the ancient buildings we now admire-the Parthenon, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the Colosseum-are what have remained from their eras, perhaps even considered cutting-edge at the time (who knows?). We mourn their loss, but we move on to new things. We create, destroy, and repeat the cycle. One more thing: are Ujwal and others restoring that modern-day "ancient ruin"? It would be wonderful if they are truly restoring it-walking the walk-rather than, you know, just using it as a photo op. Were you talking Michael Graves' (13:07) building on your way to NY from Boston? Or were you talking about something else? Graves' building is in Portland that houses a hotel among other businesses. PS The name of the song is 'Shallow' not salow.;) Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/bo_efYhYU2A/v-deo.htmlsi=1bCMbANuaDwfNniQ
I TRULY AGREE WITH SIRS perspective, IT TRULY OPEN A NEW MAY TOO SEE MODERN ARCHITECTURE
Interesting! Thank you for sharing.
This talk explains how we should be inspired and not just copy the work hence leading to creativity. And This Eye building is one creative work that reflects the notion as to how the budilding can look different, unique, bold and yet fulfil its spatial purpose. Appreciate the effort JAPChat is doing !
Great stuffs...

Very well thought, processed, articulated and presented. A huge applause to the team for their approach and creation!
Lovely! Thank you for sharing the idea behind the design.

Sir, a good initiation but cant we make the videos shorter??
Noted ! new video is out
Ted Talk this is not. I got it. It was more for architecture students.

I agree that we need to stop negative journalism for everything. Thank you for speaking up in this matter Jayandra Sir. In this case, I think journalists should approach case study methods which evaluate the perspectives of architects, local people and other governing bodies.
People did back then criticised Eiffel tower. It happens time and again 🙂
We really enjoyed the discourse. Appreciable.
Thoughtfully put, and very insightful. I find it an earnest dissection of the bewildered contemporary Nepalese architecture practice. Hopefully we’ll have more of such discourses in coming days.
By the way, the design is innovative- it looks far into the future. It reminds me of a soaring bird.
Thank you for this content....it was about time someone talk about art and architecture that encompasses all nepal not only kathmandu....
Thoughtful 🤔
Keep up the good work JAP.
LOl!
Very good lesson Sir
Newly edited: In a few minutes you gave a lesson (people who needed it) on art and architecture; “white gaze” , phenomenon of turning everything anything into a money -making machine and why it might not be such a good idea, fetishization of “exoticness.” Not because you are my brother I enjoyed your response, but because of the response that was to the point, funny, sarcastic -to name only a few. One small observation- why are you using चैं, चैं so much “चैने जो कुराले”। 🤔
Great Start. Best of luck Sir.

great opinion sir
very refreshing to see. .......
I think the Tiered Temple Proportion is out interms of its Length and Width of Base.
We didn't design that; it already existed. We only designed the Ganesh temple! What about that? 😀
the smoke from the incense stick is so soothing.
