The all new front-wheel drive Oldsmobile Toronado premiered for the 1966 model year, not 1967. The first front-wheel drive Eldorado premiered during the 1967 model year. The 1978 Eldorado was the last "big boat" model before it was downsided for the 1979 model year.

Where did you get the info on this rebuild. I can not find no rebuild books on this build. Which is wierd.

115 foot pounds, yea, I just keep saying, everything about the eldorado is MASSIVE....

So you do have to pull the intake manifold to pull the heads

I have a 500 from a '70 Eldorado. It has been stretched to 540 ci with parts from CAD. It has 600 horsepower and 700 ft lbs torque and easily puts down those numbers.

is this oil pressure on the back of the engine, wonder if some 500 engine have the port for oil pressure at the front??

that engine had the worse valve train set up in the world. those stupid bosses where the rocker arms ride on were notorious for throwing rocker arms off.

A old friend that owned a junk yard, would pull engines, turn them upside down, and bury them, if he sold one, he would dig it up and if it ran before he buried it, it would run after being buried no matter how long. leaving them right side up, makes them into buckets.

With enough money, and time, anything can be saved. I had a 1953 harley i just sold. I put after market jugs on it, and sitting idling at a light one of the jugs exploded. when the piston came down tilted it blew up the cases. I gathered the pieces of the cases, and tried welding them back together. being sand cast cases all the shocked aluminum did was spider crack. i then took them and had the spider cracked cases, Cryo tempered, and after the Cryo they welded like new aircraft aluminum. a little machining and it rebuilt like brand new. Anything that is not vaporized, can be saved.

Do you remember what you set timing to? Did you go by the emissions sticker or advance or a bit?

Lucky you. As smog regulastions progressed, the auto manufactures only had to produce a procentage of vehicals that had all of the smog equipment.

Olds engineered and developed the front wheel drive for the first Toronado in 1966. The Cadillac received the same front drive assembly for the Eldorado in 1967. The unit was used throughout the life of future Toronados and Eldorados until Olds and Cadillac went to transverse mounted engines. The Olds front drive unit was even used in the GMC motor homes vehicles as the unit was way quality over engineered and lasted with no problems. Buicks' Riviera never used this front drive like Olds and Cadillac did until around 1980 with the downsized Eldorado, Toronado's.

hello - question on the intake manifold valley pan gasket. The Permatex gasket sealer... Is it only the bottom side and a focus on sealing the intake ports? Also over the rubber end seals? Is any sealer used on the top side or is it a crush fit only? I am right at this stage of reassembly now and questioning if the shop manual is vague or very specific: 1: Place rubber seals front and rear of cylinder block. 2: "Cement sheet metal gasket and shield on engine." 3: Position manifold w/ 10 screws and 2 studs to 30 ft lbs. ... Thanks!
