WW2 Marine Carrier Aviation
United States
Приєднався 5 вер 2020
This channel is dedicated to these four WWII escort carriers and their squadrons:
CVE-106 USS Block Island - VMTB-233 and VMF-511
CVE-107 USS Gilbert Islands - VMTB-143 and VMF-512
CVE--109 USS Cape Gloucester - VMTB-132 and VMF-351
CVE-111 USS Vella Gulf - VMTB-234 and VMF-513
These were the first US Marine Corp escort Carriers carrying the Corsair in addition to the Hellcat and the Avenger.
Through researching the subject I came across over 100+ archive color films that the Marine Corp documented by having film crews embedded with the squadrons. Captured on colored film were the flight crew training of the new mission tactics, the daily life of men aboard the carrier, and mission specific operations.
My motivation for undertaking this project is my connection to my Father in Law who was a pilot assigned to VMTB-143 aboard CVE-107 USS Gilbert Islands.

Marines Arming F4U Corsair at Goleta, CA During WW2 - edited
This video from April 12, 1945 shows the arming of an F4U from VMF-513. The Corsair is being armed with bombs, rockets, and bullets. It then goes on to show the start of the aircraft which includes putting out a rich mixture fire.
These crews went on to become the first Marine Squadrons to operate from Escort Carriers in the Pacific theater during WW2. There were four Escort Carriers that started this new program:
CVE-106 USS Block Island with squadrons VMTB-233 and VMF-511
CVE-107 USS Gilbert Islands with squadrons VMTB-143 and VMF-512
CVE-109 USS Cape Gloucester with squadrons VMTB-132 and VMF-351
CVE-111 USS Vella Gulf with squadrons VMTB-234 and VMF-513
More of these WW2 Carrier based training and operations videos will be found at channel @VMTB143Mike. I will be uploading new videos of the Squadron, ship training and combat experience over time.
These films are from the collections of the USMC History Division and are digitized and physically preserved through a partnership with the University of South Carolina. These films, and much more, can be found at digital.library.sc.edu.

RC Target Drone gun practice USS Cape Gloucester (CVE-109) WW2
Переглядів 2934 місяці тому
This film shows the use of a radio controlled drone to facilitate the ship's gun practice. The drone is most likely a Radioplane OQ2 or OQ3 with a 6 hp two cycle engine. It required catapult launch as it had no landing gear. Typical landing was via parachute if they weren't shot down during gun practice. These were among the first Marine Squadrons to operate from Escort Carriers in the Pacific ...

WW2 Aircraft Carrier CVE-107 USS Gilbert Islands Arriving at Pearl Harbor and Unloading Planes
Se que a los pilotos del Corsair (que tenía un potencia y un par de coj...) les instruían para no dar motor en el aterrizaje. Precisamente por eso.
This is bad ass. That is one hell of a pilot to fly that thing with those old controls.
Engine torque.
when I first got into the airlines I flew regularly with a guy who flew corsairs off of carriers. his name was Roland Creps and he was a great pilot.
Based on other pics that’s definitely Don Troyer crashing the Hellcat, then getting the mock LSO debrief with the bandage on his head. Ace R.B. Porter was in VMF-511 at the time and Troyer happened to be flying “his” airplane with Porter’s name on it.
I'm no pilot but his initial angle of attack seemed a bit steep. There's a video on YT of a pilot who flies these during airshows, and he mentioned that the plane will lift itself when taking off. In other words, go easy on the yoke.
2Lt Edward Clifford Groves 1919-1945, from Chicago, Illinois
I wonder what exactly killed him tho. He landed on the belly at low speed. Did he just get caught in the belts? And dragged down?
Classic departure stall followed by a torque roll all in the space of about six seconds. My right foot was subconsciously stomping on the right rudder pedal. RIP.
32°47'N 119°00'W is 53 km west of San Clemente island.
As a child in my motherland, mes amis, I read the memoirs of a chap who was a combat pilote of one of these in WWII. He claimed that the Flight Manual stated that the glide-characteristics were SO poor, that if the engine stopped, you should "bail-out (if high enough) ... OR Whistle A Happy Tune and Kiss Your Ass Goodbye ! "... because a 'dead-stick’ landing was very iffy.

That had to be a wild last five seconds. I wonder what was going through his mind ?
I know, for me, it would be something like "Oh @@@@!"
Good perspective to see how huge those planes are
Sholder harness not locked for landing. His face went right into the panel.
No sound on video. People don't know it but the City of Goleta, CA is a coastal town just Southeast of Santa Barbara and during WWII it was a collection / shipping point for crude oil that was, and still today is held in storage tanks then transported to Long Beach for refining. During the war, a Japanese submarine surfaced just off the coast and shelled the oil storage yard. As you can imaging, this caused a great deal of concern and warranted a military presence up and down the coast. FURTHER ... and again most people don't know it, but during WWII German submarines sunk 174 US ships just off the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. They sunk several US ships using the lights of Coney Island to silhouette them against the dark sky. People visiting Coney Island applauded thinking it was a fireworks show.
Yes, all these films have no audio unfortunately. Some of these pilots filmed came from VMS-3 flying SBD Dauntless out of St Thomas VI on anti-sub missions.
Thanks !
Great video, guy putting the flames out on Corsair #71 is interesting.
F4UD's.
How is that fatal. Couldn't he just swim out? The cockpit was even open.
More than likely, he was knocked unconscious and drowned. He impacted the ocean water at approximately 90mph +/-.
@@VMTB143Mike More like dropped at very low ais in the stall but strapped in tight the shock loading hitting the water would easily kill ya.
Corsairs
The pilots here were Lt or Major rank. Imagine the chances of the remaining Japanese pilots against these seasoned warriors of the air.
Sorry fellows…the smoking lamp is out in squadrons spaces….forever!
Thanks for sharing this.
From the cockpit scenes it looks like they are flying F4U's?
FG-1D from squad VMF-513
Yep…it is one of the early U variants.
The squadron diary from this time shows FG-1D and F6F-5(P).
I hope Cpl. John Tyler made it. Greatest generation!
The men know the war in Europe is over. That must have been hard for them. The greatest generation.
Great video!
Kinda washed out. No sound. That would have been something!
No sound??
Correct...
Can anyone Lip Read what the Captain is saying?
This USS Block Island is the replacement ship for CVE-21 also named Block Island which was sank by German Uboat U-549 on Friday, May 5, 1944, West - North West of the Canary Islands. The only US Carrier to be sunk in the Atlantic Ocean during WW2.
When you see those young man, kind of sad to think about, they’re probably all gone now that was our greatest generation
The British Pacific fleet operated off these small islands and toward Formosa in April and May 1945 during Iceberg. They employed the carriers Illustrious, Victorious, Indomitable and Indefatigable. Illustrious was replaced by another one Formidable during the campaign. Another one Implacable arrived in June too late to see service in Iceberg. The British stopped operating in May although the campaign carried on through much of June.
The pitch stall was the worst part. Roll and yaw could have been handled if the left wing had not stalled first.
Good Lord, imagine being the next guy to have to take off after poor Lt Groves died right in front of you
The Ensign Eliminator doing what it was doing best if you didn’t fly it correctly.
Great stuff.
Looked like had full up elevator.
I'm surprised they even tried flying Corsairs on or off of escort carriers. Too big, too heavy. They were even considered unsuitable for fleet carrier operations at first. That's why escort carriers flew F4F and FM-2 Wildcats up to the end of the war. I've read about experimental attempts to fly Hellcats on CVEs, too, that did not work out, either, and for the same reason. I remember seeing a photo of a Hellcat pilot in his cockpit, missing a landing on a CVE, last photo of him taken while he was alive. The F8F Bearcat was supposed to be the escort carrier fighter to replace the Wildcat, but it did not deploy until the war ended.
The squadrons on all 4 of the ships captured by my videos are flew F6F-5(P) for photo recon. There were typically 6 of them assigned to each squadron/ship. They were launched and landed on these very carriers. Unbelievable....
That was probably a very awkward cake eating ceremony later in the evening.
Great footage! I'm so glad to see someone has this archived somewhere to preserve.
And now our Navy, not so much.
Just excellent !
That can't have felt very nice!
What do the first three planes shown landing on the deck have to do with it? the one that acutally had the missed landing wasn't filmed? just the ditch part was?
They were on the same film taken on the same day by the same camera crew in that sequence. That is how I tend to present the films. Sometimes the film crews caught the action and sometimes they didn't. In the future, I might be lucky enough to find a film showing the accident on another reel (that has yet to be scanned as of today). If so, I would create another video showing all of that in sequence. If you are critiquing my title, I try to use an aspect of the film that I think will draw attention.
This is really great thank you
Thank you for tuning in!
Watching the Corsairs and the Avengers, taking off and landing, I remember my father, which was a World War II Naval aviator saying the Corsairs were a little tricky and the Avengers were like flying a big old Cadillac.
Glade I was in the USAF.
I love these old films.
