    500 years ago the lard off of a hog was more valuable than the meat, now we grow huge fields of corn, soy, and oilseed rape and cooking oils are relatively cheap and abundant. If you're trying to produce all your own cooking fat those trendy breeds of hogs are a lot more economical than trying to press sunflower seeds.

      A big heritage breed hog provides plenty of lard and meat. These breeds were the supply for old timers. Lard and enough meat to accomplish both needs

    Gotta feed question. I've been putting pig feed, corn, soy, allstock, sweet feed, some extra minerals & just started putting in 20% cattle cubes All in a 50 gallon drum. Then I soak it all until it's a mash. This is what I am and have been feeding different pigs for around 2 years. I just wanted to see if you had any thoughts on this. I was raising the smaller fad pigs but then got some sense and am now raising Lg Black & Berkshire and will get some Duroc mixed in soon. It hasn't seemed to hurt any of the pigs and it does get them too grow but maybe not as fast as usual BUT these large breeds are new to me. I only do one barrel at a time so nothing is getting nasty, moldy or really fermenting. I'm going to send this to Chris too from HTHW but wanted to know your thoughts. Thank you

    Lots of really interesting information here. I do have a couple of questions regarding parasites (lovely subject i know ><) After the ivermectin shot, does that cause the pigs' parasite load to essentially be flushed out? Does that ever cause a problem with say a pig excreting a bunch of eggs which are then dormant in the soil or does the medicine kill them off as well? Do your pigs ever have problems with ticks? A local council is using them to clear an area of land but they've often picked up at least a few of them on their bellies and ears. Are yours able to avoid that since they're in their pens?

    Another great video and info. I agree we passed on several feeders due to their condition. Being very small for their age and behind on weight gain. That just results in a longer growing time and extra feed. Looked at several good feeders that were left over show pigs that didn’t make the cut. But at $175-$250 a feeder its impossible to even break even.

    Just drove 2 hours one way to get a group of feeder pigs. At this time a year everything around us are either left over show pigs that didn’t make the cut but they still want a high price for them. or some very sorry looking pigs that some one bought at a sale barn cheap and trying to resell them at a large profit. And like you mentioned no parents on sight. Although it was a half a day driving I have good health pigs. And that’s worth it in my opinion.

      @@RaisedHomesteading I'm in New Jersey and been raising breeding stock on pasture from 2020 - 2022 on pasture (2 acres elctric wire 3 pigs to start. we began the operation with Duroc Yorkshire cross sow bred to a berk york red wattle boar. Then we keep 2 best guilts and bred them to pure berkshire boar. Starting over next year with our most docile mothering gentle sow who throws some awesome litters black and white spotted sow who we get all black and white piglets (half are spotted the rest look just like a berkshire would) - and 2 of her guilts from her spring litter as breeding stock moving forward. and probably going to keep 1-2 barrows as feeders. Just wanted to share my insight cause I know people are looking for ways to create wonderful breeding stock. We only hand feed our breeding stock and try and watch their weight and feed them a mixture of grains corn grasses fruits vegetables, even meats like chicken and venison from farm and broths, hand picked hickory nuts, peaches apples pears from the farm. the combination of the diet and a natural habit and controlled diet is what will create superior breeding stock.

    My pig’s have been enjoying their mud holes. I’ve been trying to get one of my sows bred but she hasn’t took. I raised some good pigs from her last year. Just put the last two in the freezer a couple months ago. She’s light cross and my boar is full Poland China. My duroc sow won’t breed so I’m gonna have to do something with her.

    • @RaisedHomesteading
      @RaisedHomesteading 3 місяці тому

      They definitely need the mud. I didn’t mention light skin hogs can also sunburn. That stinks that the sow won’t breed. How old is she?

    • @michaelmiller4252
      @michaelmiller4252 3 місяці тому

      She’s a little over 3 years old. My two sows were show pigs in their younger days. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it but it makes me wonder.

    • @RaisedHomesteading
      @RaisedHomesteading 3 місяці тому

      @michaelmiller4252 It very well might. Show pigs are often fed or given shots of growth hormones and steroids that can affect fertility in some animals. It can also affect meat quality and taste of show pigs and why most aren’t sold for market when left. Before they’re entered into show feeding regiments they likely aren’t problematic

    I've worked on cattle ranches and raised hogs. Personally, I've never felt threatened by a bull or a boar. That doesn't mean I turn my back on them but they really don't scare me. You know what does scare me? Sows or cows with newborn babies. Don't mess with mama bear! I've seen guys get aerial lifts by protective cows while attempting to eartag calves, I've personally been chased by a protective sow more than once. Sows can move faster than a guy realizes! The most protective sow I ever had, I wouldn't even consider setting foot in her pen at all for any reason when she had babies on her. She was also the tamest sow I ever had who would lean her head against my leg and let me scratch her ear when she didn't have a litter on her. The contrast in personality was interesting to me. That's the protective mother instinct I guess.

    • @RaisedHomesteading
      @RaisedHomesteading 3 місяці тому

      I absolutely agree with you on sows. I guess my main take is the shear size and power these boars have with those large tusks that provide a particularly dangerous situation. I watched several people letting kids into pens with them because they’re gentle, a non aggressive boar can bleed you out accidentally just wanting a back rub. Great comments and I appreciate the input. I did do a follow up video after realizing I did not say anything about the sows.

    We had the same experience with our meat chickens back during Covid. We couldn’t get the feed we always used. Had no choice but to go with AG store brand and the birds would eat it but at 2 weeks past our normal processing time the birds averaged 1-2 lbs less then our normal average weight. So cheap isn’t the best option. You might pay a little more for quality feed but when it comes to your animal’s health and your finished product you’re always better off. Another great video.

    • @RaisedHomesteading
      @RaisedHomesteading 4 місяці тому

      Absolutely. I’ve heard varying opinions on this feed and because of the popularity of the store I bought it. I’m sure they eventually would have ate it but with the sows farrowing I can’t risk the effects. The feed I normally buy from a smaller individual has won multiple awards animals eating it from sheep, pigs, goats, cows etc constantly win Champion and Reserve Champion at the livestock shows. But I realize people buy feed for convenience and price just like from Farm Stores which I know the feed isn’t very high quality.
