Summer Writing Day | A Writing Vlog
Today is a full day writing day. Really, its a "Vivian needs to catch up because she's done absolutely nothing this month" day, but we'll rephrase it however makes me feel less bad. But we do manage to do a lot of writing today! We work on a video essay, the sample chapter for the TTRPG reserch project, and do some scenework in the fiction book.

Brain Reset Day | A Writing (?) Vlog
Переглядів 86День тому
Today, I'm doing a bit of a brain reset. I've been out of commission for the last several weeks, but I'm trying to get back into the flow of a normal average workflow. But to do that, I need to do some thoughtful resets. So today, we clean my office to give me a fresh new feeling, and then spend the time doing some planning and future considerations. But don't worry, we have enough time in the ...
April and May Reading Wrap Up

Howdy! I'm back doing some fiction reading wrap-ups! Because I don't read as much as the other booktubers out there, I'm thinking of doing these every other month so there's enough to get through but not an overwhelming amount. Anyway, this is fiction centric! In this video, we look over: 00:00 - Intro 04:49 - Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies 08:06 - The Muder of Roger Ackroyd 11:08 - The ...

A Struggle to Write Writing Vlog

Not all writing days are good writing days. Today, I thought I'd solve some of my writing struggles by leaving the house and settling at a cafe and enjoying life in that way, but - you know - sometimes it just doesn't work. I spent a lot of the writing session looking out the window, or staring at a blank screen, or wondering what on earth I'm even doing. Oh well. But we did manage to do someth...
An Experience in Querying | or, what happens when you query too early

A bit of a different kind of vlog today. I recorded a bit of my experience querying my fiction novel, which I'm using the project title Project Caramel Latte. At the end of February, I send out my first queries to literary agents, and began the process of shopping the book around. But I very quickly realised I didn't think the book was ready, and I learned the hard way to trust my gut. I hope t...

    I think different writers tackle the querying process differently and that is okay. Kate DiCamillo had to/decided to send over 400 queries to get her first book 'Because of Winn-Dixie' published. Others might decide to send only few and still get their books published. Yes, will come eventually. I began my querying process in May and so far have received only rejections, which is completely normal. Fastest 'no' came just three days after I sent the letter. However, I'm determined to send new query letters to agents 🙂 Good luck with your book!!

    I am working on my own TTRPG system, and maybe that is the reason why I stumbled over this video. What kind of book is that supposed to be about TTRPGs, since it doesn't sound like you want to write a rules book?

  • @freedomthroughspirit
    @freedomthroughspirit Місяць тому

    So before we query are we supposed to write book, edit book (developmental, copyedit, etc. all the edits), beta readers read it, get feedback, incorporate edits, etc. THEN we query? Rejections are hard but I just figure we should expect them. And getting any feedback at all is incredible!!! What a gift. Expect rejections, imho it seems like a needle in a haystack trying to find the right book for the right agent at the right timing (and all of the other variables). Plus it's not a personal rejection, we are not our creative projects, no matter how much of ourselves or our work we've put into it. Once we've birthed it, it belongs to the world. That helps me keep some distance from it. That said, I'm not sure I even trust the publishing process, leaning toward self-publishing eventually, IF I create a novel I deem worthy of publishing. This first book might just be for the experience of writing a novel. Time will tell. : ) Thank you for sharing your experience! The transparency is so valuable. Kudos to you for writing well and taking the leap into the unknown. 🤩

      I wasn't sure if you'd already done developmental edits before you received feedback from the agent that prompted the decision to restructure/rewrite the book. I'm new to your channel. Best wishes with your project!

    My heart goes out to you because I know that this stage of the writing career is killer. (I'm prepping to query in the fall.) But I'd also encourage you to reframe the agent's critiques in your brain--he took the time to read your book AND give you detailed feedback! That is such an incredible blessing, and truthfully so kind of him. He could have just said no, or told you it wasn't for him, or anything like that. But he gave you personal feedback and even liked enough of your writing and storytelling to ask you to send it to him again after you've reworked it. So cool!

    Do they tall you the reasons behind the rejections, I hope so because I have been rejected 14 times without any reasons which frustrated me so I turned to self publishing, I know it's hard as a self author but this the fast at least to me. I like to have an agent honestly but this journey is very hard, really hard.

    omg I appreciate you sharing this so much and being so open! And you weren’t being pedantic at all. I had a similar epiphany about my current manuscript before as well. I rewrote an entire YA fantasy because the premise was what I wanted, but I realized I’d written it as like a fantasy-fantasy initially when I wanted it to be more of a ‘thriller in a fantasy setting.’ Once you basically mentioned you wanted it to be a ‘mystery in an urban fantasy setting,’ I was like I get you 1000%. Congrats on being brave by putting your work out there and wishing you the absolute best on your rewrite!

    Can I ask one question please ? Why count rules it is a publishing house rules or an individual decision ? And what is the profit of counting, I do write a lot but never count my words, I don't like to be judged for counting know what I mean, I like to be a free author out of boundaries.

    • @VivianAsimos
      @VivianAsimos 3 місяці тому

      No, my publisher only cares about the word count of the final manuscript. I keep track of word count so I feel like I'm accomplishing something when I look back over the month. If you're still writing the same thing from the start and end of the month, it can feel like you've not done anything. So seeing the word count reminds myself that I've been accomplishing things. But yeah, it's not for everyone. It's just important to do what makes you feel good about yourself and your work.

    Okay, howdy again! I think Dimension 20 will be a little easier to get into than Critical Role because their episodes are much shorter and so are their campaigns. If you don't mind not getting in to a big arc with Critical Role, I'd suggest checking out their Exandria Unlimited: Calamity run. It's four episodes long. Um, the shortest run time for an episode in that is like 4 hours while the longest episode is around 6 hours long lol. But it is SO GOOD (I have a line from it tattooed on my body so I might be biased) and about as "bite size" as CR gets. You also don't really need to know much about the world going into it. They also have a new series with a TTRPG they created called Candela Obscura and those campaigns are shorter run, I think 3-4 episodes. I've only watched a couple episodes though. Lol, sorry to spam your comments again. I am going to share this with some of my friends who play and DM to see if they'd like to interview with you. :B Do you have any gaming shops near you? I know around here those shops will often host game nights where they'll play D&D or other TTPRGs. Same with a couple of the comic stores near me. If you don't mind playing at an online table, I think those might be easier to come by. There are so many discords dedicated to TTRPGs that you could join. Oh. Another podcast I listen to isn't an actual play but the hosts talk about so many aspects of being at a table. It's called Table Talk (linkin.bio/tabletalkrpg/ ) not sure if that will be of any help, but I thought I'd share it lol. Okay, I'll shut up now.

    I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. I love TTRPG. Watching/listening to others play them, playing them myself, and AHH. I started playing D&D back in 2018 or 2019, I believe. It was with a group of my online friends so I've mostly only ever played online using virtual tabletops and virtual tools. I do have real dice thoug because nothing beats rolling real dice and then getting mad at said real dice and tossing them into a dice jail. You just can't do that with digital dice. I've branched out some and played a little in person with my husband, our kids, and some friends but consisently I play online via discord and foundry. I love collabroative storytelling so much. Co-writing with friends, text based RPG, TTRPGs. Nothing beats creating a world and stories with others. It takes some of the pressure off your shoulders, and it is just fun to have to think on your feet and figure out just what your character would do when another character does something unexpected. I think too from a fiction writing standpoint, TTRPGs is a great way to learn how to develop characters because you spend so much time inside of one character's head, you kind of figure out how to develope characters in writing too, at least that is my experience. Okay, okay, okay. Do you have a favorite Actual Play show you like? Obviously, I love myself Critical Role. Dimension 20 is fabulous too. Last year I fell in love with Two Monsters Rolling Dice, they play Fatecore and the story they told had Western vibes and dinosaurs and I'm waiting for them to come off hiatus. I've streamed with my friends a few times too for charity events, and that is always fun playing with an audience even if it is an audience of like two or five. I'll shut up now but I'm SO EXCITED TO HEAR MORE ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH AND WATCH THESE VIDEOS! Sorry for the all caps. :B

    • @VivianAsimos
      @VivianAsimos 4 місяці тому

      Ahh!! Thanks so much for this! I love hearing it, and really feeling your excitement! When writing my fiction, I've always thought of occasionally throwing a die to determine what would happen to make it feel more improvised than formally set out. But I'm too much of a direct planner for that. I started with listening to D&D is for Nerds, which I fall in and out of. And then I was super into Campaign, which became Campaign Skyjacks. I've thought about trying out Adventure Zone as well. I always like when people play things other than D&D because I like to see (or rather hear) all the other games and systems that exist. I'll try out Two Monsters, which sounds fun.

    • @agingerwrites
      @agingerwrites 4 місяці тому

      @@VivianAsimos I have rolled the dice for my fiction stories. I also created character sheets for characters lol. And one of my shelved projects is about adults in their 30s who play TTRPGs. So. I of course had to make their character's character sheets. <.<; Two Monsters is a lot of fun! They just announced a new miniseries, I'm not sure when it will start. I will say the first few episodes might be a little harder to get into as they introduce the characters who are all spread apart but once characters start coming together and interacting with each other it is SO good.
