Why does the Filipinos chose Dr. Jose Rizal as a national hero even before the America suggested Rizal to be the national hero?
1) Dr. Jose Rizal or Pepe accomplished his masterpiece thru his works as a writer to try to wake the Philippines and free from the colonialism of the Spaniards. The Impact works of Dr. Jose Rizal in his writings made the people realize that it was time to thrive and fight for the independence of the Filipinos. The Noli Me Tangere is a novel workpiece that describes the Spaniards immoral way of treating the Filipinos. The friars or pyrale are the ones who rule or have the highest position in the Philippines at that time and they have power over the people. Treating the Filipinos not equal to each other giving them names, Indios. Noli me Tangere was published in 1887 and this is the 1st time that Spaniards were alarmed that made Dr. Jose Rizal's works must be deleted. But still, Dr. Jose Rizal published and did not want to erase his work because he is dedicated everyone should see that he is brave and true to his works. Exposing the Spaniards to the cruelty and dishonesty 2) My favorite character in Noli Me Tangere is Crisostomo Ibarra because he is like the main character in the main story. He is like Dr. Jose Rizal but minus the fighting and sheds blood to make the Spaniards respect them. Dr. Jose Rizal is the opposite. Crisostomo Ibarra has a passion for education that he is well knowledgeable about everything he knows around him. Every truth that is happening in his environment. He came from a wealthy family his father but the Spaniards or friars took advantage of this because his father was so kind and treated the friars equally to them. He choose violence after his father died and the way of the treatment by the Spaniards that he cannot tolerate it. I was drawn to Crisostomo Ibarra because he does not follow the norm and wanted to make a change in society. That is so rare that fighting for what he believes is true and stands for his own beliefs. 3) The theme of Noli Me tangere is freedom from Spain it is the most known for abusive power. Dr. Jose Rizal wanted to expose or see others and he wanted to free the people from the Spaniards. To gain independence from the Spanish and respect the culture of the Philippines. This is to see the violence and unfair treatment of the Indios or Filipinos. The second is the social climbers which was illustrated by the character of Kapitan Tiago. The character has the confidence to combine with the Spaniards which is to serve them but downgrade or leave the one’s self-culture in exchange for a good life. Simply forgetting where they came from just to have class in society. The third is the abusive power which exposes the power of being a Spaniard or friar. This is the corrupt government officials. In the Noli me Tangere exposed the corruption in the society. Padre Damaso is the main character in this corrupt type of person, does not care but himself because he has the power in his hand. Bonus Question: Crisostomo Ibarra and Simon Ibarra are the same in their goal to gain back the independence of the country from the Spaniards who colonize the Philippines. They are both from the wealthy family and have an international education. They want to use the education they have to teach others. Crisostomo’s way is to influence, teach the people and have a peaceful way to resolve the problem. Unlike Simon Ibarra is the opposite he uses a hard way of teaching and wants a revolution. Llegado, B43
(SARCEPUEDES, B43) 1. Even before Rizal wrote the novel, Noli Me Tangere, he was already writing articles, poems, and essays against the injustices of the Spanish friars. This did not alarm the Spaniards as they thought that these were just mere written essays and that his influence would not spread quickly. However, when Rizal published his first ever and controversial novel, Noli Me Tangere had shaken up the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines as it awoke the nationalism spirit of the Filipinos. The well-told novel exposed the corruption and cruelty in a variety of abuse of the Spanish friars and enlightened the Filipinos who were experiencing forced labor, heavy taxes and debts, and several forms of exploitation and slavery. With this, Rizal instilled a form of national identity and pride in the nation that weakened the power and influence of the Spaniards. Therefore, his novel became a beacon of hope for the Filipinos during those oppressed hard times and inspired them to cause a revolution to end Spanish rule. 2. My favorite character in Noli Me Tangere would be Filisofo Tacio. He was known to be an activist for seeking social reforms from the government and expressed his ideals in a paper written in a cryptographic alphabet, hoping that the future generation would be able to decipher it. Furthermore, with this, he was hoping that the future generation would be aware of the abuse and oppression done by the colonizers. Additionally, this represents Rizal’s famous saying that the Youth is the hope of the Fatherland. As the saying goes, those who forget, tend to repeat history. His exceptional reasoning got him his nickname of Filoso Tacio. He is my favorite character as he seems to represent most of the Filipinos. We are always discriminated against for our race, skin color, and physical appearance so we are often underestimated. So the Spanish called us names, like, Indio but they did not expect that after more than 300 years of their ruling, we would fight and stop their ruling that is full of abusiveness, discrimination, exploitation, and cruelty against us. 3. The themes of Noli Me Tangere are “Freedom from Spain”, “Social Climbers” and “Abusive Power”. The first theme, “Freedom from Spain”, is considered to be the main theme of the novel. It parallels Rizal’s drive to win his freedom from the Spaniards. Indeed, Rizal aimed at eliminating the Spanish colonizers' viciousness, greed, cruelty, and ignorance from the land and its people. It was the first book to portray life in the Philippines during the 1800s in such a bold approach. The second theme is social climbing. Social status seems to be important in the early 1800s as it determines how most of the Spaniards will treat you. Jose Rizal incorporates individuals such as Dona Victorina and Capitan Tiago to represent the various social classes in the Philippines. These people, particularly the Spaniards, the illustrados, and the mestizos demonstrate how people tend to affiliate with the higher ranks of society. Lastly, the third theme is “Abusive Power”. Along with being colonized by the Spaniards in the 1500s, Rizal clearly depicts the variety of abusiveness and cruelty of the Spanish friars to the Filipinos. Exploitation by civil guards, friars, and other government authorities against Filipinos. This concept in "Noli Me Tangere" comes to life, just as Crisostomo Ibarra, the main character, experiences it with the passing of his father.
ALIYAH JANDY CARTA (B43 MIDYEAR 2023) 1) Noli Me Tangere, written by Filipino nationalist and hero Jose Rizal, is considered a seminal work in Philippine literature and a key catalyst for the eventual overthrow of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. While Austin Coates' statement might be seen as a bit simplistic, it does capture the novel's significant role in galvanizing anti-colonial sentiment and inspiring a sense of national identity and unity among Filipinos. However, it's important to note that the novel itself did not directly lead to the downfall of Spanish rule; rather, it contributed to the broader movement for independence. Some ways in which Noli Me Tangere contributed to shaking up the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines include a) Exposing Social Injustices and Corruption: The novel vividly depicted the social injustices, abuses, and corruption prevalent under Spanish colonial rule. Through its characters and their experiences, Rizal shed light on the exploitation of the native population, the oppressive friar system, and the widespread mistreatment of Filipinos by Spanish authorities, and b) Awakening National Consciousness: Noli Me Tangere played a crucial role in awakening a sense of national consciousness and identity among Filipinos. Rizal's portrayal of the characters' struggles and aspirations resonated deeply with readers and helped foster a shared understanding of the need for change and self-determination. 2) Some of my favorite characters are Crisostomo Ibarra, as the novel's protagonist, Ibarra represents hope and idealism. His return to the Philippines after studying abroad symbolizes the aspirations of the Filipino people for positive change and progress. I am drawn to his determination to uplift his countrymen and challenge the injustices of the Spanish colonial system. Another favorite character of mine is Maria Clara as she is an embodiment of purity and innocence. She is a symbol of the traditional Filipina, caught between societal expectations and personal desires. Her character highlights the constraints placed on women during that era and their struggles for self-expression. Lastly, Elias is a complex character who represents the suffering and resilience of the Filipino people. He is driven by a deep desire for justice and the liberation of his fellow Filipinos from oppression. I am drawn to his selflessness and unwavering commitment to his principles. 3) "Noli Me Tangere" by Jose Rizal explores a wide range of themes that reflect the social, political, and cultural realities of the Philippines under Spanish colonial rule. Some key themes of the novel include Colonial Oppression and Injustice: The theme of colonial oppression is central to the novel. Rizal exposes the harsh realities of Spanish colonial rule, depicting the abuses and injustices suffered by the Filipino people. Through various characters and situations, he highlights the exploitation, discrimination, and cruelty that were pervasive during that time. One more theme would be Religious Hypocrisy and Corruption: Rizal critiques the role of the Catholic Church in perpetuating the colonial system. He portrays certain friars, such as Padre Damaso, as corrupt and morally bankrupt individuals who abuse their power for personal gain. This theme exposes the hypocrisy and negative influence of the clergy on both spiritual and societal matters.
1. Austin Caotes a British writer said that because the novel of Dr. Jose Rizal particularly El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere exploits the unjust treatment of the Spanish government during Rizal’s time. He knows that the novel has a lot of meaning that can encourage Filipinos to seek revolution and open their minds about the Spanish regime. Rizal is very creative in his works. I remember from our previous lessons that the priests Father Obach refused Rizal and Bracken’s marriage due to Rizal’s writings and political stance that our against them. We can see that the writings and Novels of Rizal affected the Catholics and the government that time. 2. My favorite characters are Basilio and Elias. As said in the story Basilio was a little boy who is the hope of the fatherland, after the death of his brother crispin his mother went crazy on longing with it. Basilio did not lose hope and continued his life despite the problems he is facing. The other character is Elias, or referred as the masses or the local people of the country, a type of person who is eager to free the country from the colonizers. Elias was saved by Crisostomo Ibarra and to give back to what he did, he became a loyal friend and saved him on times that Ibarra needs him. 3. There were 3 teams in Noli Me Tangere, the first is freedom from Spain. The country back on that time was ruled by the Spaniards, Rizal aimed to address the Filipinos to seek revolution and regain the Motherland. The second theme from the novel is Social Climbers. Rizal made a lot of characters in which it correlates to some of the people in his life. The theme social climber shows personalities of the Filipinos that still exists today in which they are always getting close or associated with on someone who is in position or someone who has a high class in the society. The last is Abusive Power. Just like in number one the Spanish government that were ruling before was abusive of their powers, Rizal showed in the novel the wrong doings and corruption of the government for the Filipinos to see. BONUS Simoun and Ibarra Crisostomo’s personality and appearance changed. We all know that Ibarra from Noli Me Tangere was a very good man who sought education which he requested from the local government. But due to the abuses and violence he experienced in Noli Me Tangere his alter ego or disguise in the body of Simoun became a ruthless person who is seeking for revenge. A man who was once compared to Rizal’s diplomatic side and a very promising youth became a rebel and abandoned his views before. BALAGTAS - B43
1. The novel exposed the Spanish colonial authorities' and church' abuses and injustices against the Filipino people It addressed problems such as oppression, corruption, social inequality, and lies about religion.Rizal's fictional characters and narrative provided a critical examination of the Spanish colonial regime's treatment of the Filipino people, he also used his literary abilities to portray the cultural and historical context of the Philippines at the time. Despite being banned by the Spanish government due to its strong nationalist and anti-colonial themes, it has a huge following among Filipinos. 2. My favorite character in the novel is Crisostomo Ibarra and Simoun, which both portrays Rizal himself and all the things he did in his travels, and experiences using a fictional character, as he represents also the view he saw going on the country. the unfairness of the colonizers, and how he experience everything around him. He is driven by a desire to see his country advance and change. Both character is frequently admired for his bravery, intelligence, and sense of justice. His personal journey and challenges are shared with readers as he show the Filipino society and confronts the injustices perpetrated by the Spanish colonial authority. 3. Colonial Oppression, Rizal exposes the Spanish colonial regime's oppressive nature, which exploited and abused the Filipino people. He portrayed how colonizers maintained power through corruption, forced labor, and unfair policies. The novel shows an abrupt distinction between the wealthy the powerful, represented by the ruling Spanish officials and priests, and the poor masses of Filipinos who suffered under their rule. Rizal emphasized the social inequalities that existed at the time. Church Hypocrisy Rizal criticized the Catholic Church and its representatives in the Philippines for their hypocrisy. He criticized the priest' abuse of power, immorality, and failure to practice Christianity's true principles
ANQUILLANO, B43 1) It is indeed the novel that would shake up the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines and it was accomplished by Dr. Jose Rizal by spreading the novel all throughout the country and letting the Filipinos read and realize that it is not just a novel with fictional characters, it is a novel that tells them the blind spot of their eyes towards Spanish government. Additionally, the masterpiece gave an accurate situation of the Filipinos living in a harsh condition at that time by applying the real-life experience of Rizal in the novel’s story. He exposed in this novel the corruption, brutality, greed, and immorality of the Spaniards. Filipinos were also given spotlight by exposing their ignorance and brutality while siding with Spaniards in which they have been blinded by material things in expense of their fellow Filipinos. The Spanish government was destabilizing because of the widespread realization that was happening among the Filipinos and Rizal was adding fuel to the fire on the hearts of the Filipinos urging them to fight and stand against Spanish hands. Lastly, the accomplishment of the is very clear, it was the rise of nationality and pride among the Filipinos which gave impact on the systems of Spanish government. 2) Crisostomo Ibarra was my favorite character in Noli Me Tangere. I was drawn to him because of his idealistic and optimistic characteristics. His love for his country and people drove him to fight other people and the severe conditions of the society of his time. Crisostomo Ibarra was also representing Dr. Jose Rizal’s side who would rather choose to fight with his knowledge than anger and violence. Being him as a pacifist was also a reason for me to be drawn to him because he did not want to fight people hand to hand but rather expose them and give them their own medicine. He also dedicated his life for his country because he wanted to start the change on systems of unjust treatment for the Filipinos. He acted as the hope for the Filipinos to achieve better life for the present and future generations. Crisostomo Ibarra also reflects Rizal’s value for education, he thinks that education would be the key for the freedom we wanted. Lastly, he was a motivation for the youth to act as the igniter for the success and better country for the Filipinos where value for education is embedded in them. 3) The first theme is the “Freedom from Spain”, we know that on the very top of the list of Jose Rizal was to gain independence from the Spaniards, so Noli Me Tangere was composed of things that exposed the Spaniards and free the Filipinos from its barbarity, greed, cruelty and ignorance. Thus, the novel was used to attain freedom through transparency of the Spanish doings in our country. Second theme is the “social climbers”, it is included as a theme of the novel because it shows how different social class differs from each other which result into discrimination. The last theme is the “abusive power”, this theme directly attacks the abusive system of projecting power by the Spaniards. Filipinos suffered abuse from guardia civil, friars, and other government officials in which it really shows how Spaniards use their power as a colonialist to exploit their level in the society. Bonus question: Crisostomo and Simoun have a lot in common, including coming from wealthy families and having excellent educational backgrounds. Additionally, both of them have ideas for improving their nation and ensuring that everyone receives justice. They were both Illustrados as well and became aware of the Spanish people's wrongdoings. On the other hand, they are highly different from one another and set themselves apart depending on their personalities and worldviews. Crisostomo Ibarra is motivated by his extensive knowledge and education to solve the issue, and he uses his love for his nation to realize all of his goals for the Filipino people. He also employs the law and education to maintain peace with the Spaniards. He was also upbeat about young people since he saw them as the future of Filipino society. Simoun Ibarra, however, behaves differently from Crisostomo in how he approaches the Spaniards. He was motivated by his rage and need for retribution. He thinks the quickest path to freedom is through revolt. His thoughts were radical and violent, and he believed that this was the only course that the Filipino people would take.
1. I believe that Rizal's powerful novel, "Noli Me Tangere," achieved its goal of challenging Spanish rule in the Philippines. It exposed the unfair treatment and abuse suffered by the Filipinos under the colonial regime, highlighting the corruption of the Spanish friars and authorities. By portraying the harsh realities of colonial life, the book stirred national pride among Filipinos, inspiring them to question Spanish authority and demand change. "Noli Me Tangere" became a rallying point for the Philippine nationalist movement, motivating people to fight for independence and leading to the end of Spanish rule in the country. Most importantly, I realized that, in essence, it was more than a literary masterpiece; it was a catalyst for change and empowerment. It emboldened Filipinos to stand up against oppression and fight for their rights. 2. In "Noli Me Tangere," I really like Crisostomo Ibarra. He's my favorite character for a few reasons. He loves his country and people no matter what difficulties he encounters, which inspires patriotism and a strong sense of nationalism. Even when faced with tough situations and personal hardships, he shows strength and resilience. I believe that Crisostomo Ibarra becomes a symbol of hope and the collective desire for positive change during a challenging time in Philippine history, making him a character I truly admire and feel connected to. And most importantly, Crisostomo Ibarra's journey of growth and transformation throughout the novel is truly captivating. He starts as an optimistic and somewhat naive young man, but as the story progresses, he becomes more seasoned and determined to fight for justice. I truly admire the way he brings people together in their pursuit of a better future. 3. After watching the video lecture, I learned that it encompasses three prominent themes. Firstly, the novel portrays the theme of "Freedom from Spain." By revealing the brutality, greed, cruelty, and ignorance of the Spanish colonizers, Rizal aims to redeem the Philippines and its people. "Noli Me Tangere" stands as a courageous and groundbreaking work, boldly presenting a vivid account of life in the Philippines and igniting the aspiration for freedom among its readers. Secondly, the “Social Climbers”. This is shown through characters like Doña Victorina and Capitan Tiago, who represent the different social classes in Philippine society during that time. Rizal skillfully depicts how people try to move up the social hierarchy by associating themselves with higher-ranking individuals, especially Spaniards, educated Filipinos, which are the illustrados, and mixed-race individuals, which are the mestizos. And lastly, The theme of "Abusive Powers" highlights the long-lasting oppression endured by Filipinos during Spanish rule. Rizal's vivid portrayal of the harsh and cruel treatment inflicted on the people serves as an inspiration for them to persevere in their pursuit of justice and positive change. BONUS QUESTION: 4. In "Noli Me Tangere," Crisostomo Ibarra is introduced as an optimistic and compassionate individual who returns to the Philippines with the intention of seeking justice and implementing reforms for the betterment of his people. He symbolizes hope and optimism amidst the oppressive colonial regime. In "Noli Me Tangere," Crisostomo Ibarra is portrayed as an idealistic and compassionate young man returning to the Philippines seeking justice and reforms for his people, representing hope and optimism in the face of oppression. In "El Filibusterismo," Crisostomo Ibarra transforms into the dark and vengeful character of Simoun, driven by bitterness. On the other hand, Simon Ibarra is a minor character in "Noli Me Tangere," depicted as conservative and cautious, aiming to protect the family's reputation. In "El Filibusterismo," Simon Ibarra takes on a more significant role as the priest Father Florentino, offering wisdom and redemption to the troubled Simoun. Both characters experience personal transformations in the two novels. Crisostomo Ibarra's evolution into Simoun shows the darker side of human nature influenced by revenge, while Simon Ibarra's journey as Father Florentino remains a source of guidance. Their contrasting paths illustrate the complex nature of human character when faced with societal pressures and injustice. (Carañagan, Section B43)
1. Jose Rizal accomplished it for one good reason, namely his passion for his native country. Theoretically, though, Rizal starts from the very beginning of the wrongdoings of the Spaniards, whereas Rizal traveled the world and learned about many civilizations, while also building a powerful organization with a similar objective. Furthermore, Jose Rizal exposed the harsh and oppressive ways in which the Spanish colonial rulers and the clergy in the Philippines conducted themselves. It brought attention to the social inequities, corruption, and mistreatment of the indigenous Filipinos, raising public awareness and indignation. Lastly the very crucial part of this novel. Awakening the Filipinos from the delusional caged. Rizal's work instilled a sense of national identity and pride among the Filipinos. It showcased the rich cultural heritage of the country while pointing out the need for self-awareness and unity in the face of colonial oppression. Although "Noli Me Tangere" alone did not cause the Philippine Revolution, it unquestionably had a significant impact on how the Filipino people saw themselves as a whole, inspired future leaders, and laid the foundation for a larger movement for independence and the eventual overthrow of Spanish colonial rule. 2. The figure of Elias, who is Ibarra's enigmatic ally and companion, really drew my attention as I was watching the UA-cam movie. Crisostomo Ibarra finds a faithful friend and ally in the strange and enigmatic Elias. He possesses a variety of talents and personifies the Filipino people's tenacity. His selflessness, bravery, and sense of justice frequently captivate readers. What made me adore this character? I recognize my own courage and loyalty in him. Elias had a dual commitment to his country and Crisostomo. He dedicated his final minutes to saving the life of the person he thought represented the only chance for the Filipino people to escape their dire circumstances. Elias had moral values. 3. A Noli Me Tangere book typically has many topics. The novel discusses the racial discrimination experienced by the native Filipinos, known as Indios, at the hands of the Spanish ruling elite as the first example of discrimination that is still present in modern society. Second, the novel Second the Revolution and Reform discusses the idea of revolution as a reaction to the repressive regime, while it mostly promotes peaceful reform. And last, the courtship and love. The love tale of Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara, which depicts the difficulties of love in the face of social and familial expectations, is one example of the romantic themes found in "Noli Me Tangere." The fourth is love and sacrifice. Throughout the entire book, the idea of love and sacrifice is present. Sisa and Elias are two characters that exhibit sacrifice and unwavering love for their family and nation. The most typical during the Spanish era. Spanish colonial governance in the Philippines was harsh and exploitative, as the novel Colonial Oppression and Abuse reveals. It highlights the unfair treatment and suffering of the common people by showing how the ruling class, friars, and government officials mistreated native Filipinos. BONUS QUESTION Since only one experience was used to create both novels that of Jose Rizal the similarities between them are not very great. Simoun in "El Filibusterismo" is a manipulative and vindictive figure motivated by the need for retaliation and violent revolution, in contrast to Crisostomo Ibarra in "Noli Me Tangere" who is portrayed as a hopeful and caring young man seeking peaceful reforms. Despite the fact that they are the same person, the experiences they have and how they respond to the injustices they encounter are what cause the two novels' characters to be so drastically different from one another. Abulencia // B43 1. Rizal's Noli Me Tangere vividly describes the oppressive system, highlighting the corrupt friars, abusive officials, and exploitative landowners who oppressed the natives. By exposing these injustices, Rizal also awakened the Filipino populace to the harsh realities they faced. The novel also has compelling narrative and relatable characters, such as Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara, elicited empathy and sympathy from readers. "Noli Me Tangere" played a pivotal role in inspiring nationalistic sentiments among Filipinos. It encouraged them to reflect on their identity, heritage, and the need for collective action to achieve reforms and liberation. Rizal's portrayal of Filipino characters as dignified and capable individuals contradicted prevailing stereotypes propagated by the colonial rulers. This challenged the perception of Filipinos as inferior and helped in building a sense of pride in their identity and capabilities. 2. The favorite characters in Noli Me Tangere that I was drawn to are Elias and Padre Tolentino. Elias because Elias has an enigmatic character who captures my attention. His selflessness, courage, and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good make him an admirable figure. He represents the plight of the oppressed and serves as a symbol of resistance against injustice. I also like Padre Florentino because of his wisdom, resilience, and commitment to his faith make him an intriguing character. As a symbol of hope and continuity, he provides guidance to the main characters and represents the enduring spirit of the Filipino people. 3. The three themes of Noli Me Tangere are Freedom from Spain, Social Climbers, and Abusive Power. The first theme is about Rizal’s persistence in attaining freedom from the Spaniards. Rizal aimed to redeem the country and the people by exposing the barbarity, greed, cruelty and ignorance of the Spanish colonizers. The second theme is about Social Climbers of some characters in the novel like Kapitan Tiago and Dona Victorina. It highlights the disparities between the ruling Spanish elite and the oppressed native Filipinos. It portrays the social hierarchy and the stark contrast in living conditions, opportunities, and privileges between the wealthy and the poor. Lastly, is the abusive power Rizal exposes the abuses and corruption of the Spanish friars, government officials, and wealthy landowners towards the native Filipino population. He portrays how the colonizers exploit the locals, subjecting them to unjust taxes, forced labor, and other forms of cruelty.
1, Austin coates i such a brilliant British novelist, Austin Coates once observed that José Rizal's masterpiece, "Noli Me Tangere," had the power to upend the very underpinnings of Spanish rule in the Philippines. By exposing the egregious wrong doings and systemic injustices committed by the Spanish colonial authority, Rizal's literary masterpiece succeeded in this difficult endeavor by stoking national consciousness and sparking the flames of Filipino nationalism. In "Noli Me Tangere," Rizal expertly woven a tapestry of brilliant storytelling, offering a caustic indictment of the restrictive socioeconomic conditions prevalent at the time of Spanish rule. He eloquently revealed the cunning schemes of the corrupt friar system, which ruthlessly exploited the indigenous population, putting them to economic servitude and spiritual slavery through his engaging characters and captivating story telling. 2, Basilio is my favourite character in this book. He represents youth in all its forms. Basilio was shown as a young boy with a strong sense of self in this instance. That he was brave and strong enough to take care of his mother, who had turned insane as a result of Crispin's murder, despite what had happened to his little brother. To overcome challenges in the future, Basilio taught me how to be brave and resilient. That is a perfect example of how, as Dr. Jose Rizal once said, young people might represent our nation's hope. Basilio showed me how to be courageous and resilient so that I could confront obstacles in the future. 3, First, Noli Me Tangere included "Freedom from Spain" as one of its themes. This theme is essential for increasing consciousness, condemning the colonial rule, and sowing the seeds of nationalism and resistance, even though it does not explicitly address attaining independence from Spain. It is still a potent representation of the struggle against Spanish colonial power and is the impetus behind the larger struggle for Philippine independence. The following film, "Social Climber," starring Capitan Tiago and Doa Victorina, highlighted numerous facets of Philippine society that were influenced by Spanish colonial control. They represent certain characteristics and life events that provide insight into the current social, cultural, and political currents. Finally, we have "Abusive Power." In the novel, abuse of power by friars, Spanish officials, and even certain Filipino nobility is regularly shown. The oppressive and dishonest actions of the colonial administration are sharply criticised by these transgressions. bonus question Crisostomo Ibarra and Simon Ibarra, who come from a privileged upbringing that represents the power and wealth of their family, exhibit different personalities, motivations, and behaviours in "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo." Given their shared heritage and social status, they both seem to be outcomes of their upbringing. Their responses to the difficulties they face determine how different their futures are. Crisostomo represents idealism, optimism, and a desire for beneficial change, whereas Simon exemplifies cynicism, a desire for retribution, and a lack of faith in peaceful progress. Through these individuals, Rizal examines the complexities of human nature and how people respond to oppression. barcellanob43

Simon is the older, more embittered version of the younger and idealistic Crisostomo Ibarra. They both desire reform and justice for the Philippines but differ in their approach. Crisostomo Ibarra believes in peaceful means, while Simon resorts to more radical and violent methods to achieve his goals. On the other hand, when it comes to their differences, Crisostomo Ibarra is the protagonist of Noli Me Tangere and is depicted as a young, hopeful, and optimistic individual who seeks positive change in society. In contrast, Simon is the central figure in El Filibusterismo and is portrayed as a vengeful and manipulative character, driven by bitterness and a desire for revenge. -DE GUIA, B43

1. Rizal's masterpiece, Noli Me Tangere, shattered the power of the Spanish Government in the Philippines. Noli Me Tangere was about exposing the Spanish government's wrongdoings to the Filipino people, such as bribery, exploitation, and oppressive behaviour, as well as Catholic Church abuses. Jose Rizal created this to promote Filipino knowledge of the Spanish government's wrongdoings and to motivate people to take action in pursuit of freedom and peace. Noli Me Tangere became essential in awakening Filipinos, and Jose Rizal achieved popularity with this novel. 2. Crisostomo Ibarra is my favourite character in Noli me tangire because he believes that education facilitates both empowerment and social change. Through his persona, Rizal emphasizes the importance of education for societal reform, particularly in conquered cultures. Ibarra's education has allowed him the ability to objectively examine the social and political realities in his nation, as well as to see the injustices caused by the Spanish colonial system. He envisions a Philippines free of the persecution of the Spanish colonizers, where socioeconomic disparities are addressed and everyone has access to education. 3. The first theme is freedom from Spain. It reflects Jose Rizal's perseverance in obtaining his freedom from the Spanish government. It tries to redeem the nation and its people by exposing the violence, greed, cruelty, and folly of the Spanish colonists. The second theme is the social climber. It illustrates the many socioeconomic classes in the Philippines in the late 1800s, including Dona Victorina and Capitan Tiago's interactions with upper-class individuals, including Spaniards, Illustrados, and Mestizos. The final theme is the use of abusive power. Jose Rizal depicts Filipinos as colonized by Spaniards and mistreated by civil guards, friars, and other government officials. (Tisalona, B43)
(Ramilo, B43) 1) While it's true that José Rizal's novel "Noli Me Tangere" played a significant role in raising awareness about the oppressive Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines and stirring sentiments of reform and nationalism among Filipinos, it's important to note that the impact of the novel was not solely responsible for shaking up the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines. Instead, it was one of several factors that contributed to the growing unrest and eventual push for reforms. "Noli Me Tangere," published in 1887, was a fictional work that depicted the social injustices and abuses perpetrated by Spanish friars and colonial officials against the Filipino people. It exposed the corruption, exploitation, and cruelty experienced by Filipinos under Spanish rule. The novel was written in a way that resonated with Filipinos' emotions and sense of identity, helping to catalyze a sense of national awakening and unity. "Noli Me Tangere" by José Rizal contributed to the awakening of Filipino national consciousness, the exposure of colonial abuses, and the catalysis of reformist movements. While it didn't single-handedly bring down the Spanish government, it was a crucial piece in the larger puzzle of Philippine history that ultimately led to greater autonomy and independence. 2) Maria Clara - A woman well-known in San Diego for her social standing. Mara Clara and Ibarra are engaged to be married after growing up as childhood friends, while her godfather, Father Dámaso, is unhappy with the marriage and does everything he can to interfere. When Ibarra is excommunicated for nearly killing Dámaso at a dinner party, plans are made for Mara Clara to marry Linares, a young Spanish man. She doesn't speak up because she doesn't want to offend her father, Captain Tiago, a spineless socialite who disavows Ibarra in order to keep friars like Father Dámaso happy. María Clara discovers that Captain Tiago isn’t her real father-rather, Father Dámaso impregnated her mother, who died during childbirth. When Ibarra is put on trial after being framed as a subversive by Father Salví, María Clara is blackmailed into providing the court with letters Ibarra has sent her-letters his prosecutors unfairly use as evidence of malfeasance. She does so in order to keep secret the fact that Dámaso is her biological father, since she doesn’t want to disgrace her mother’s name or compromise Captain Tiago’s social standing. Still, she feels intense remorse at having sold Ibarra out. When the newspapers eventually falsely report his death, she calls off her marriage with Linares, instead deciding to enter a convent because she can’t stand to exist in a world that doesn’t contain Ibarra. 3) Colonial Oppression and Social Injustice: The theme of colonial oppression is central to the novel. Rizal depicts the harsh realities of life under Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. The social injustices, corruption, and abuses committed by the colonial authorities, particularly the Spanish friars, are highlighted. Through characters like Crisostomo Ibarra and Elías, Rizal exposes the suffering and exploitation faced by the Filipino people. Nationalism and Patriotism: Rizal's work is imbued with a strong sense of nationalism and patriotism. The characters in the novel, especially Crisostomo Ibarra, symbolize the desire for change and the push for national identity. The novel underscores the importance of Filipinos coming together to fight for their rights and work towards the betterment of their country. Religious Hypocrisy and Corruption: The Spanish friars and the church are portrayed as sources of hypocrisy and corruption. Rizal criticizes the church's exploitation of the local population and its role in maintaining the status quo. Characters like Padre Salvi embody the negative influence of the church on society. Education and Enlightenment: Education is seen as a powerful tool for change and progress. Crisostomo Ibarra's experiences abroad and his desire to establish a school in his hometown reflect the value of education in empowering individuals and promoting critical thinking. Love and Sacrifice: The theme of love and sacrifice is present throughout the novel. Characters like Sisa, who sacrifices for her children, and María Clara, who faces difficult choices due to her family's expectations, demonstrate the lengths to which individuals are willing to go for their loved ones. Class Divide and Social Stratification: Rizal explores the disparities between different social classes in Philippine society. He portrays the stark contrast between the privileged elite and the impoverished masses, emphasizing the need for social reforms to bridge this gap. Identity and Cultural Heritage: The characters' struggles with their identities and the tensions between embracing their native culture and adopting foreign influences are depicted. The novel explores the complexities of being Filipino in a colonial context. Symbolism and Allusion: Rizal employs symbolism and allusion to convey deeper meanings. The title itself, "Noli Me Tangere," is Latin for "Touch Me Not," a reference to a Biblical phrase. This symbolizes the need for Filipinos to be cautious and not let themselves be easily exploited or manipulated. Resistance and Rebellion: The theme of resistance and rebellion runs through the narrative. Characters like Elías embody the spirit of resistance against oppression. While the novel doesn't explicitly advocate violence, it portrays the tension between peaceful reform and more radical means of change. These themes work together to create a multi-layered narrative that engages with the social, political, and cultural realities of the Philippines under Spanish rule. "Noli Me Tangere" serves as both a literary masterpiece and a call to action for social reform and national consciousness.
1. Austin Coates was right on his statement. Noli Me Tangere, was a powerful novel that shocked the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines. Jose Rizal’s work did it by exposing Corruption and abuses of the Spanish government, It inspired the sense of nationalism among the Filipinos, and it forced the Spanish government to make reforms. His work was a powerful piece of novel that had a huge impact in the Philippine Revolution. Rizal’s work was a reminder that literature can be used for a powerful force of change. The overall impact of Noli Me tangere on the Spanish government was significant. The novel was also controversial at the same time that it was banned and it imprisoned Rizal as a result. Since the novel was read by a lot of Filipinos its message can’t be silenced. That;s why the Spanish government was forced to make reforms to control the Filipino people. There are a lot of ways in which Noli Me Tangere shook up the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines. Jose Rizal’s masterpiece is a really powerful novel that has a profound impact on the Philippines history as a whole. It shows a reminder that literature can really be a powerful tool that can be used for change. 2. There were a lot of characters in Noli Me Tangere but my favorite character overall has to be Elias. I liked him because he is both a complex and well-developed type of character. He is a man of action, he is also a man of compassion. He is willing to fight for what believes in, and he is also willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. Elias is a Filipino who is not accepted by the Spanish authorities or by the Filipino elites. However, he is a powerful symbol of hope for the Filipino people. He shows that even though the Filipinos are oppressed, they are still not defeated. They are still capable of fighting for their freedom and the betterment of their future. Elias overall is a tragic figure, but he is also a heroic future. He dies in the end, but he died for what he believes in. His character is a reminder that the fight for freedom is a long and difficult one, and he showed that it is a fight that is worth it. 3. Noli Me Tangere has a number of themes that it shows. It was full of social commentary, and the following themes discussed are still relevant to this day. The themes that were shown are: * Colonialism and Opposition The novel depicted the ways of the Spanish Government and oppressed the FIlipino people. Jose Rizal showed how the Filipinos were treated at the time, they were forced to pay tax and often they received harsh punishments. They were also denied basic human rights. The Catholic church abused their power to control the Filipinos at the time. They controlled the education system and they used their power to promote Spanish culture * Religion and Superstition The Catholic church at the time used religion to justify their actions to the Filipinos, and they often abuse them. Jose Rizal also showed that they are using religion to control the minds of the Filipino people. The catholic church was often corrupt and abusive. * Social Injustice He showed that the Spanish rule was full of injustices at the time. These include poverty, illiteracy, and the exploitation of women and children. The novel showed the Spanish government and the catholic church benefitted from these forms of injustices. BONUS: Crisostomo Ibarra and Simon Ibarra are both idealistic young men who want to help and improve the lives of the Filipino people. However, they had different approaches to their own goals. Crisostomo Ibara was a wealthy young man who returned to the Philippines after studying in Europe. He was full of hope and optimistic. He realized that the Spanish government was corrupt and oppressive. He was also betrayed by his people who he trusted, this includes his friend Elias. Simon Ibarra was also the same as him, however he believed that violence was the answer at the time. He became a wealthy jeweler and used his position to fund the revolution to fight the Spanish Government. Despite their differences, they are both complex and interesting characters. They are the products of their own environment, and they were both driven by desire to improve the lives of everyone. However, they only differ in ideas in achieving their goals and this leads to them taking different paths from each other.

1.) Austin Coates is one of Jose Rizal's biographers and he claimed that Noli Me Tangere was the novel that was written to shake up the power of Spanish government in the Philippines. In my opinion, Austin Coates said it correctly as it also served as a medium to awaken many Filipinos to join the revolution. Even though it was not Rizal's intention to start the revolution, it was enough to be the spark and to fan the flames of revolution. Rizal included many of the mistreatment and brutality of the Spanish government and even the betrayal of the privileged Filipinos to fellow Filipinos. The dichotomy between the ruthless government and the hope in the Filipino citizens showed how the Spaniards were a social cancer coming into the country. If the novel incited the revolution, then Rizal's novel evidently did a good job at describing the brutality as relatable and realistic as possible. 2.) There is no doubt that my favorite characters would be Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara. Ibarra was one of the well-written characters that seemed to be a literary device to resemble Jose Rizal's eagerness for social and political reform. He was somewhat the hero of the novel as he was much more involved in the grand scheme of things. Moreover, Maria Clara is also a well-written character that resembles the Filipina before. Perhaps some may argue that a man creating a woman as a character in a novel is not a realistic woman, but at that time, Rizal was able to describe a Filipina maiden. Overall, these characters are vital to the flow of the stories just as much as the supporting characters are, but they are a close symbolism of what Filipino men and women were during the Spanish colonial era. 3.) I think the main themes of Noli Me Tangere are oppression and corruption as there are many ideas written about the abusive powers of the Spanish government and even the holier than thou act of the Catholic Church. The misuse of power drove Filipinos to a helpless corner and the only way they could fight back or be free of such oppression is by climbing the social status through a higher position or in wealth. However, it further emphasizes the corruption and oppression as a Filipino would have to endure so many to be respected. 4.) The obvious similarity between Crisostomo and Simon would be how they originated from a well-respected family, at least with how they were wealthy enough to have a neutral status in life in the novel. This made it easier for them to maneuver through the abusive Spanish government. However, they differ in the way they wanted to help their society. Crisostomo was more outspoken, whereas Simon knew more and better to be secretive about his real intention to reform the society. Francia, B43
SAURE,B43 1.Rizal's work consistently exposes current Spaniards in the Philippines of all flecks, as indicated in the video presentation. His story exposed the dishonesty and cruelty of the civil guards that push good men into crime and banditry by concentrating on an administration crawling with self-seekers eager to make their fortune at the cost of the Filipinos. Because of this, honest and sincere politicians typically fail in their attempts to aid the nation, and their good intentions often result in self-destruction. He denounced the abuses and excessive authority of the Philippine Catholic Church, drew attention to the fraud and exploitation of the friars, and portrayed them as corrupt, immoral, and authoritarian people. Because he had personally seen the suffering of the Filipino people under the Spanish colonial rule, Rizal used his works to encourage a feeling of national identification and unity among Filipinos. He implanted the idea and confronted these oppressive structures with peaceful methods. 2.Crisostomo Ibarra and Pilosopo Tasyo are two of my favorite characters in the book. Crisostomo Ibarra is a passionate guy who is determined to bring about change in society. I am particularly drawn to him because of his steadfast adherence to his convictions and his willingness to combat the injustices committed by the Spanish Government. He definitely had a life that was representative of that time period's Filipino population. He had a transition, which inspired and gave me hope. His tenacity for his country's future is what I admire most. Pilosopo Tasyo is a figure who advocates for governmental improvements. I appreciate that he wrote his principles in hieroglyphs so that future generations might read them and understand how the Spanish Government and friars oppressed and mistreated the Filipino people which can enlighten them and of course it will awaken the nationalist in them which then for me can result on them being prouder and more noble Filipinos. 3.Freedom from Spain, social climbers, and abusive power are the three primary topics covered in Noli Me Tangere. The work captures Rizal's steadfast commitment to free his country from Spanish tyranny in relation to the first subject, which is Freedom from Spain. It highlights the violence, greed, and stupidity of the Spanish invaders while exposing the harsh reality of life in the 1800s Philippines. The second subject is "Social Climbers," which is illustrated by figures like Dona Victorina and Kapitan Tiago. These figures illustrate how people sought social advancement and acceptance among the Spanish or educated classes. They serve as a reflection of the society's aspirations, difficulties, and differences of the period. Last is the theme of Abusive Power which is depicted through the suffering of Filipinos at the hands of civil guards, friars, and government officials. Crisostomo Ibarra's experiences, including the death of his father, illustrate the injustices and abuses faced by the Filipino people. BONUS Simoun and Crisostomo Ibarra share similarities in that they are both decedents of the rich Ibarra family. They have international education and come from wealthy families, giving them a more comprehensive understanding of Philippine society. Both of them seek redress and change. Simoun and Crisostomo Ibarra pursue their goals in different ways, but both include challenging Spanish rule. Both characters are motivated by a strong desire for justice and reform in Philippine culture. While Simoun uses more extreme techniques and ultimately seeks retribution and revolution, Crisostomo first advocates for peaceful improvements and tries to work inside the system. In addition to addressing the socioeconomic ills and widespread corruption in the Spanish colonial system, they seek to lessen the suffering of their fellow Filipinos.Meanwhile, Crisostomo Ibarra is a more idealistic and upbeat character than the other two. He thinks that knowledge and illumination have the ability to bring about change. On the other hand, Simoun from "El Filibusterismo" has turned cynical and dejected. He is turning to more extreme means because he has lost hope in non-violent transformation and thinks the system is hopelessly broken. Crisostomo Ibarra mostly adheres to the law and seeks to bring about change through nonviolent methods.
1) Rizal's masterpiece achieved this in a variety of ways. First, the novel vividly depicted the Filipino people's social injustices and abuses under Spanish rule. Rizal exposed the corruption and cruelty of Spanish friars and officials through well-developed characters and compelling storytelling, shedding light on the plight of ordinary Filipinos who were burdened by heavy taxes, forced labor, and various forms of exploitation. In addition, "Noli Me Tangere" instilled in Filipinos a sense of national identity and pride. The novel inspired people to challenge the status quo and to speak out against oppression. It sparked a sense of nationalism and a desire for liberty, inspiring Filipinos to seek change and advocate for their country's rights. The novel also aided in the formation of the nationalist movement and, eventually, played a critical role in the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule, culminating in the declaration of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898. In summary, Jose Rizal's "Noli Me Tangere" shook the Spanish government's power in the Philippines by exposing the injustices of the colonial regime and inspiring a growing sense of national identity and resistance among the Filipino people. 2) I have two favorite characters in Noli Me Tangere: Elias and Pilosopo Tasyo. Pilosopo Tasyo is an elderly wise man who is often perceived as aloof and eccentric. He is, however, a deep thinker who can see the world for what it truly is. He represents enlightenment and logic. Pilosopo Tasyo appeals to me because he is a character who is not afraid to speak his mind, even if it means going against the grain. Elias is a mysterious character who is always willing to put himself in danger to help others. He represents hope and opposition to the Spanish government. Elias appeals to me because he is a complex and well-developed character. He is not a flawless hero, but he is a man willing to fight for what he believes in. Both Elias and Pilosopo Tasyo are important characters in Noli Me Tangere. They represent different aspects of the Filipino struggle for independence. Elias represents the physical struggle, while Pilosopo Tasyo represents the intellectual struggle. Both characters are essential to the novel's message of hope and resistance. 3) The themes of Noli Me Tangere and a brief explanation of each: Colonialism. The novel exposes the corruption, greed, and hypocrisy of the Spanish government and friars, who ruled the Philippines as a colony. Rizal shows how the Spanish colonial system exploited the Filipino people and prevented them from achieving their full potential. Religion. The novel also explores the role of religion in the Philippines during Spanish rule. Rizal shows how the Catholic Church was often used to justify the oppression of the Filipino people. He also criticizes the hypocrisy of the Spanish friars, who often used their positions to enrich themselves and abuse their power. Social injustice. The novel exposes the many forms of social injustice that existed in the Philippines during Spanish rule. Rizal shows how the Filipino people were subjected to poverty, exploitation, and discrimination. He also criticizes the lack of education and opportunity for the Filipino people. Revolution and reform. The novel ends with a call for revolution or reform to overthrow the Spanish colonial system. Rizal argues that the Filipino people must unite and fight for their freedom. He also suggests that reform is possible if the Spanish government is willing to address the grievances of the Filipino people. Noli Me Tangere is a complex and multi-layered novel that explores a wide range of themes. These themes are still relevant today, and they continue to inspire people to fight for justice and freedom. BONUS QUESTION Crisostomo Ibarra and Simon Ibarra are the same character, but they are presented in different ways in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. In Noli Me Tangere, Ibarra is a young man who returns to the Philippines after studying abroad. He is idealistic and wants to improve the lives of his countrymen. He is also in love with Maria Clara, the daughter of a Spanish official. In El Filibusterismo, Ibarra returns to the Philippines as Simoun, a wealthy jeweler. He is now cynical and disillusioned, and he believes that the only way to achieve change is through revolution. He is also willing to use violence to achieve his goals. Despite their differences, Ibarra and Simoun are both complex and well-developed characters. They are both driven by a desire to improve the lives of their countrymen, but they have different ideas about how to achieve that goal. Ibarra believes in peaceful reform, while Simoun believes that only revolution will bring about change. MONTEMAYOR, B43
1."Noli Me Tangere," published by Jose Rizal in 1887, wasn't disruptive to the Spanish administration in the Philippines, as Austin Coates claimed. The novel, on the other hand, had a huge influence on Philippine society. It revealed the crimes of Spanish colonial government, awakened national awareness, attacked the authority of Spanish friars and clergy, urged the usage of the Filipino language, and cultivated the seeds of change and reform. While it did not right away contribute to the end of Spanish rule, it did play an important part in motivating nationalism and resistance, which led to the Philippine Revolution of 1896 and finally independence from Spain in 1898. 2.Crisostomo Ibarra, the primary protagonist, is an interesting figure. He symbolizes the highly educated Filipino elite who comes home after studying abroad. Ibarra is an interesting personality because of his sincere desire to better his nation and his ideals. Throughout the story, his journey represents the challenges and tensions that many Filipinos encountered throughout the Spanish colonial era. Ibarra feels driven to utilize his riches and knowledge to help fellow citizens and achieve positive social change. 3.Jose Rizal's "Noli Me Tangere" deals on colonial tyranny, nationalism, religious deception, love and sacrifice, the power of education, and social differences. The novel condemns Spanish colonial governance in the Philippines, promotes national unity and pride, and highlights the importance of social reforms and equality. It emphasizes the difficulties and ambitions of the Filipino people throughout the colonial era through its characters and plot, making it an important portrayal of the country's search for independence and identity. BONUS: Crisostomo Ibarra and Simoun in Jose Rizal's "Noli Me Tangere" and its sequel "El Filibusterismo" are the same person, although they endure major transformations. Crisostomo Ibarra begins as an enthusiastic young man seeking good change via peaceful methods, but Simoun develops into an angry and bitter guy seeking vengeance by violence. The difference between the two personalities demonstrates how personal experiences affect views and behaviors. Both individuals eventually meet untimely ends, revealing the realities of human nature. (SARCEPUEDES, B43) 1. I believe Rizal lived a productive and fulfilling life during his four-year exile in Dapitan. Although it should be an obstacle full of uncertainties for him as his punishment for writing against the Spanish friars, his nationalism surfaced and helped Dapitan to be a progressive area. Rizal was evidently committed to making the town a better place for the locals to live in. He was known to be the first of everything in the Dapitan. In addition, his time in Dapitan was not in vain. Rizal was able to engage in social activities while being in exile. He won the Spanish lottery that is worth a thousand pesos in which he bought 70 hectares of land in order to build his own home, houses for his pupils and patients, and a clinic and a school. Furthermore, he was able to enhance his concept of practical leadership and nationalism. Therefore, he concluded that self-improvement and community development are vital to national integrity and governance. 2. I believe Rizal’s greatest contribution to Dapitan is the building of schools and being the first teacher. Rizal believed that the youth are the hope of the nation, or “Ang Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan”. Therefore, he was an activist in promoting education that is inclusive for everyone. His efforts in elevating the community’s progressiveness are through education and knowledge. He imparted them a lifelong education and instilled in them principles, morality, and most importantly, nationality, through the building of the school, his methods of education, and his active involvement in the community. Rizal left a significant legacy that will be cherished and protected in Dapitan. His being in exile was never a hindrance in his mission of spreading nationalism and patriotism toward his fellow Filipinos. The Spanish friars might have thought that his influence would not be as strong in Manila, however, the people of Dapitan are grateful for what he had done in their community. The enlightenment by Rizal through education enabled him to empower the people of Dapitan to foster a national identity as a Filipino. 3. YES. BONUS: The video “Liham para kay Pepe” was about a boy named “Jojo”, who had difficulty fully understanding what Rizal meant that “Ang Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan”. It seemed like he was narrating to Rizal the struggles and difficulties he is experiencing in his life. His father’s abuse of him and his mom being an active server in the church made him feel neglected, which is why it seemed he had no guidance in the direction of his path in life. His experiences were quite similar to Rizal’s so he was comparing them. Both experienced enjoyment with their acquaintances attempted to get addicted, fell in love with a relative, and fought for his loved ones with a pen. However, if Rizal was fragile and was easily shaken up by the threats that the Spanish friars did to him for him to retract his novels against them, the nation would not have gained the independence we have now. Although the individuals featured in both of these narratives face challenges on their path to a promising future, they ultimately succeed in obtaining a degree while setting an example for future generations to act morally and educate themselves. Rizal's life served as inspiration for the video letter's producer, who used it to emphasize the value of education, the need to combat violence, and the need to work toward inspiring this country's future generations.
1. Rizal had a rather humble existence in exile in Dapitan. Because Rizal had set up an informal school in which he taught a number of children. He also had patients who came to him in order to get healed. He also appreciates being involved in agricultural operations. Rizal even fell in love with Josephine Bracken and established an intimate relationship with her. In Dapitan, Rizal had a simple yet meaningful life. He managed to make the best of a bad circumstance. This could serve as a reminder that no matter what lifestyle we lead, we are still capable of doing anything; we can make a difference even in the most insignificant ways. 2. In my opinion, Rizal's greatest contribution to Dapitan was the construction of houses, clinics, and schools. The school is a place where students can study and learn. The clinic was for the folks he helped with their problems as the community's first doctor. Dr. Jose Rizal valued youth because, through the creation of the school, he enabled numerous youngsters to receive an education. Because of the hardships of life, the people who live there lack a decent education system. Education is the key to a more prosperous future. 3. Yes Tisalona, B43
CARTA, Aliyah Jandy (B43 MIDYEAR 2023) 1) Rizal's life in Dapitan, during his four-year exile from 1892 to 1896, was a significant period of personal and intellectual growth. Despite being away from his family and friends and restricted in his movements, Rizal made the most of his time in Dapitan and turned it into a productive and fruitful chapter of his life. His activities and contributions include engaging in various activities that showcased his diverse talents. He practiced medicine, providing medical assistance to the locals and even performed surgery. He also established a school where he taught subjects like math, science, and English to young boys in the community. Rizal also engaged in agricultural and industrial projects, introducing modern farming techniques, and setting up a water supply system. He also encouraged local fishermen to use fish nets instead of destructive methods like dynamite fishing. Despite the limitations and challenges of exile, Rizal seemed to find fulfillment and purpose in his life in Dapitan. His love for education, his desire to serve the Filipino people, and his intellectual curiosity allowed him to make the most of his time there. While he might have yearned for freedom and longed to be back with his family and actively participate in the unfolding events in the Philippines, he did not let his circumstances hold him back. Instead, he embraced his exile as an opportunity to make a positive impact on the local community and continue his intellectual pursuits. 2) Rizal's greatest contribution during his exile in Dapitan was his service to the community, particularly through education and healthcare. He used his knowledge, skills, and influence to make a positive impact on the lives of the local people and fostered a sense of empowerment and enlightenment among them. One of Rizal's significant contributions was the establishment of a school for boys in Dapitan. This school, known as "La Escuela de Dapitan," provided quality education to young boys from the town and neighboring areas. Rizal's educational philosophy emphasized critical thinking, practical skills, and a well-rounded education. He sought to instill in his students a sense of nationalism, love for the Philippines, and a desire to contribute to the country's progress. Through this school, Rizal helped shape the minds and characters of his students, potentially inspiring future leaders and reformers. Rizal also engaged in agricultural and industrial projects during his exile. He introduced modern farming techniques and promoted the use of more efficient and sustainable methods to improve the livelihoods of local farmers. Additionally, he worked on establishing a water supply system to address the community's water needs. These projects not only provided practical benefits to the people of Dapitan but also demonstrated Rizal's commitment to the improvement of their living conditions. 3) Yes.
1.) During his exile, Rizal continued his medical practice, serving the local community and even neighboring areas. He established a school, teaching various subjects such as math, science, English, and Spanish to his students. He also improved the town's water system, promoting public health and sanitation. Rizal's fascination with the natural sciences continued in Dapitan. He collected specimens of animals, plants, and even insects, conducting research and making significant contributions to the field of biology. Additionally, he pursued his artistic talents, creating sculptures, paintings, and sketches. Rizal fell in love with Josephine Bracken, and their relationship blossomed during his time in Dapitan. Despite the challenges of exile, there are indications that Rizal found fulfillment in his life in Dapitan. He saw his exile as an opportunity to contribute positively to society and to pursue his intellectual and artistic passions. His dedication to education, public service, and scientific exploration demonstrated his adaptability and resilience during this difficult period. 2.) Rizal's greatest contribution in Dapitan was his establishment of a school and his efforts in education. Recognizing the significance of education in empowering the people and fostering progress, Rizal took it upon himself to educate the youth in Dapitan and instill in them the values of critical thinking, nationalism, and civic responsibility. Through his school, Rizal provided a nurturing environment for his students to develop intellectually and morally. He encouraged free thinking and the pursuit of knowledge, empowering his students to question the status quo and envision a better future for themselves and their country. Bonus: The video emphasized the protagonist's intense struggle to grasp the true meaning behind Jose Rizal's famous quote, "ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan". As the child compared his life to that of Rizal, he faced the harsh reality of experiencing abuse from his father, making him realize that Rizal's life was not without challenges. In a misguided attempt to emulate Rizal, he also believed that becoming a womanizer would somehow make him a symbol of hope for the country. the video conveyed the message that being the hope of the nation, as Rizal envisioned, involves more than just superficial attributes or achievements. It requires a deep understanding of one's role in society, a commitment to overcome adversity, and a genuine desire to contribute positively to the betterment of the nation. 3.)YES Roxas,B43
1.) If Jose Rizal were to live at present, his status as a national hero would still depend on various factors. It is essential to remember that the perception of historical figures can change over time, and modern society might evaluate Rizal's actions and beliefs differently from his contemporaries. Rizal's role in the Philippine Revolution and his advocacy for reforms were significant during his time. However, the Philippines has evolved politically, socially, and culturally since then. Rizal's personal life, including his relationships, would likely be scrutinized in the modern era. While he was a brilliant thinker and an advocate for national identity, he was also human and had flaws. Assessing the impact of his relationships on his mission and public image would play a role in determining his hero status. However, Rizal's influence on Philippine society and his legacy of nationalism, education, and social reform are essential aspects to consider. If his ideas and principles continue to inspire positive change and progress in the country, then his hero status must remain upheld. 2.) Among the women who had relationships with Rizal, Josephine Bracken would arguably complement him best in his mission for his country. Josephine was an Irish woman who became Rizal's common-law wife shortly before his execution. While Rizal had various significant relationships with other women, Josephine's character and background seem to align closely with his ideals and aspirations for the Philippines. Josephine's willingness to embrace and immerse herself in Filipino culture showed a deep level of understanding and respect for Rizal's homeland. This cultural sensitivity would have resonated well with Rizal's advocacy for national identity and pride in Filipino heritage. Josephine's background as a woman of intelligence and education would have allowed her to engage in meaningful discussions with Rizal about social and political issues. Her insights and perspective could have enriched Rizal's own thoughts and strategies. Lastly, despite the challenges she faced as a foreigner in the Philippines, Josephine supported Rizal's nationalistic activities and beliefs. Her dedication to Rizal, even in the face of danger, displayed her commitment to his cause. 3.)YES Roxas,B43
CARTA, Aliyah Jandy (B43 MIDYEAR 2023) 1) If Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, were to live in the present day, it's challenging to predict how he would be perceived or judged, as historical context and societal values have evolved significantly since his time. Rizal's track record and contributions to Philippine history, such as his writings and advocacy for social reforms, national identity, and education, have undoubtedly shaped his status as a national hero. However, his personal life and relationships, like any historical figure, were not without imperfections. It's essential to remember that the evaluation of historical figures is often complex and multifaceted. While some people may focus on Rizal's flaws and shortcomings in his relationships, others may prioritize his ideas, writings, and impact on the nation's history and identity. Moreover, the standards for being considered a national hero can vary across different cultures and periods. Some may argue that personal flaws should not diminish the value of a person's contributions to society, while others might take a more critical stance. In reality, historical figures are often remembered and celebrated for their positive contributions to society, while their personal lives are sometimes scrutinized and debated. If Rizal were alive today, he might face both praise and criticism, as do many prominent figures in the public eye. Ultimately, the recognition of Rizal as a national hero would likely depend on how present-day society interprets and values his ideas, works, and overall impact on the Philippines' history and identity. It's worth noting that national heroes are often symbols of a nation's aspirations and values, and their significance can transcend individual actions or relationships. 2) Among the women who had relationships with Jose Rizal, two significant figures stand out: Segunda Katigbak and Leonor Rivera. Both had a profound influence on Rizal's life, and they could be considered as potential complements to his mission for his country in different ways. Segunda Katigbak was Rizal's first love, and their relationship began during their younger years. Segunda came from a respected family, and her intellectual and refined nature likely had an impact on Rizal's own development. She was supportive of his ambitions, and Rizal's feelings for her inspired some of his early poems and writings. Although their relationship did not lead to marriage, Segunda's influence on Rizal's formative years may have contributed to his passion for education and desire for social reforms. Rizal's relationship with Leonor was more significant and enduring. She was his childhood sweetheart and remained a central figure in his life until they parted ways due to parental disapproval. Rizal's love for Leonor, as well as the challenges they faced in their relationship, greatly influenced his later works, including his novels and poems. Leonor's support and understanding of Rizal's vision for the country could have played a role in strengthening his resolve to advocate for reforms and inspire national consciousness. 3) Yes.
LARA, B43 1) Rizal's Noli Me Tangere accomplished what Austin Coates said by skillfully utilizing symbolisms, compelling characters, and the exposition of harsh realities. First and foremost, Rizal employed symbolisms throughout the narrative to represent the oppressive nature of the Spanish regime. One of the most significant symbols was the Noli Me Tangere itself, which translates to "Touch Me Not" in Latin. Through this symbolism, Rizal cleverly encapsulated the spirit of resistance that permeated the novel, inspiring readers to question the legitimacy of Spanish rule and yearn for a better future. Furthermore, the novel's characters played a crucial role in conveying the social issues prevalent during that era. Rizal portrayed a diverse range of personalities, each representing a different aspect of society under Spanish rule. Character like Padre Damaso showed the abusive nature of some Spanish friars, highlighting the corruption and its detrimental impact on the population. Lastly, "Noli Me Tangere" provided a harsh critique of the colonial administration, giving light on the various injustices faced by the Filipinos under Spanish rule. The novel reflected the abuse of power, land dispossession, forced labor, and the suppression of cultural identity. Rizal's "Noli Me Tangere" was undeniably a masterpiece that shook the foundations of Spanish governance in the Philippines. 2) My favorite character in Noli Me Tangere is Crisostomo Ibarra. I was drawn to this character because of his appreciation for education, which plays an important role in shaping not only his character but also his vision for societal change. Crisostomo Ibarra's passion for education serves as the foundation upon which his character is built. As an heir of a wealthy family, he could have easily embraced a life of indulgence and privilege. However, he chooses a different path - one marked by intellectual curiosity and a genuine desire to improve the condition of his fellow Filipinos. His return to the country after years of studying abroad shows his commitment to bring about positive change. Through Crisostomo Ibarra's character, Rizal highlights the transformative power of education. He serves as a contrast to the prevailing stereotypes of the affluent class during that era, which often portrayed them as apathetic to the struggles of the common people. Instead, Crisostomo Ibarra emerges as a symbol of hope, challenging the societal norms and advocating for reform through enlightenment. 3) a. Freedom from Spain - One of the central themes of Noli Me Tangere is the relentless pursuit of freedom from Spanish oppression. Rizal, through the novel, mirrored his own aspirations for the liberation of the Filipino people from the hand of colonial rule. By weaving this theme throughout the narrative, Rizal calls for unity and resistance against the unjust Spanish regime b. Social Climbers - Another crucial theme in Noli Me Tangere is the portrayal of social climbers within Filipino society. Rizal keenly observes the existence of various classes in the Philippines, and he uses characters like Capitan Tiago to exemplify the aspirations of some Filipinos to elevate their social status by associating themselves with the Spaniards. Capitan Tiago's character represents the ambition to climb the social ladder at any cost, even if it means compromising one's values and identity. c. Abusive Power - The novel powerfully addresses the issue of abusive authority under Spanish colonial rule. The Filipinos were subject to the cruelty and exploitation by the guardia civils, friars, and corrupt government officials. Noli Me Tangere exposes the injustice and corruption prevalent in the society, with powerful characters like Padre Damaso symbolizing the oppressive influence of the church and the friars. BONUS QUESTION They are both similar in their goal of wanting to free the country from the hands of the Spaniards. They are different in the way of attaining it, the former in a diplomatic way, and the latter in a revolutionary way. Both Crisostomo Ibarra and Simoun share a common desire to free their beloved Philippines from the Spanish tyranny. Crisostomo's idealistic vision for societal reforms is evident in Noli Me Tangere, where he returns from Europe with plans to improve the lives of his countrymen. Similarly, Simoun's alter ego, the dark and cunning version of Crisostomo, carries the same burning passion for change in El Filibusterismo. The characters' narratives are deeply rooted in their resistance against Spanish colonial rule. Crisostomo Ibarra and Simoun diverge significantly in their strategies for change. Crisostomo, in Noli Me Tangere, advocates for gradual and peaceful reforms through education and enlightenment. He believes in the power of reason and dialogue to bring about social progress. On the contrary, Simoun adopts a radical approach in El Filibusterismo. His character is shaped by the tragic events in the first novel, and he becomes a revolutionary figure, resorting to violence and manipulation to overthrow the existing system. Simoun's transformation showcases the consequences of unaddressed grievances and the failure of peaceful avenues for change.
