How to Sail a Fullrigger (3 of 3) - Wearing
How to sail a Fullrigger episode 3 of 3 - Wearing a Fullrigger
These 3 films has taken roughly 2 years to make, and 10 years of sailing to learn the skills in the first place.
It is a rare insight into an almost forgotten craft of sailing larger sailing vessels, a skill only preserved by a the few dusin sailing vessels in the world still operating today.
This is an attempt to showcase this craft and a knowledge to a broader audience with film, that has previously only been described in books writtien around the the year 1900.

It is sad to think that the knowledge of sailing was invaluable for 1000 years, and now it's just practiced by those trying to keep that knowledge from fading away.
It is, but it is also a really natural thing. Like the weavers and the wheel makers. Thanks for watching! :) 🙏🙏👊
That is how I learned it from my dad decades ago. Still the best and easiest version for me ;-)
Thank you for this information
Thanks for watching! 🙏🙏👊
Had to leave a comment for thanks. I'm writing a fantasy themed pirate story right now and this helped add some additional flavor and realism to the story. Clear, easy to understand and no excess fluff. Excellent video.
Excellent! Thank you! And please let me know if you get a pilot deal! Im very interested! 🙏🙏👊
Simple Sheet Bend - never heard the name Flag Knot attributed to this bend.
Understandable. All names Come from a Scandinavian and British origin.
@@howtoboat That's interesting, Simon, and I'm sure that Flag Knot is a common name from your part of the globe. Every other knot you demonstrate designates a name that matches what I'd expect. This is the lone exception.
Double sheet bend
All names used origin in Scandinavian sailing traditions. It has many names and functions. -
Hello, what is the name of this beautiful danish ship ?
Its called Georg Stage
thank you@@howtoboat

Thank you for watching! 🙏
Thank you. Beautiful vessel, photography, drone footage, illustrations and explanations.
Thank you 🙏👊 thanks for taking the time to watch it all :) it took me 3 years to learn the skills and another 2 years to produce. So thank you! 🙏

Tryin to make this stuff exciting! 🤣 thanks for watching! 🙏👊
Thank you, quite enjoyable.
Thanks for watching!!
Goof job pulling on the end that avoiding force bc some people teach it without showing direction of the knot
Thank you! Sure it is the intent to make it understandable and accessible.. with cool sound effects!
It's reef knot from Bharat Scout
So Bharat Scout uses this to reef sails? 🧐 much is lost in translation whitin seamenship
I thought 6k is not 10bit?
10bit is colour debt, it Can be any resolution.
This is an excellent tutorial. Is there a part 3 posted yet? If so, could someone post a link?
Hi, working on it :) thanks for watching :)
Thanks! A sailing video about sailing techniques instead of lifestyles and bikinis. Great visuals for the explanations. Excellent drone work. Would appreciate a link to the ship.
The ship is called GEORG STAGE www.georgstage.dk - thanks for watching :)
Thanks for posting this. I always wanted to know how they did that.
Thanks im glad you like it! Im working on part 3 :)
Lately I’ve been finding myself with a fascination for sail ships of older times. These videos have been a perfect explanation of how they functioned! Looking forward to part 3
Thank you! Part 3 will be ready soon :)
Bravo! Bravo!! Bravo!!! 👍
Thanks! 🤙
So, a single fishermans knot is just two overhand knots with the other string through the middle? Think I'l stick with the triple fishermans knot.
It is! :)
Thank you, very impressive sights to see, how a rigger is starting a journey. Never seen before in such a perspective.
Thanks Rick! Im glad you found it informative and useful!
A rather cruel day indeed :)
Hehe yup!
Thanks for that Simon. I often work as a volunteer explainer on the Cutty Sark. Now I can explain things to our visitors more clearly.
Hi Patrick, im really glad it helps you explain. I’d love to go see the Cutty Sark, it’s a very known name. It’s in London right? . I’ve been to see HMS Victory once in Portsmouth but would love to explore the English fleet more! :) thanks for watching Patrick!
Randomly found this. I'll stick around to see more.
Thank you im happy to hear that :)
Fascinating and so clearly explained and demonstrated. Thank you! Could please you explain the mechanics behind the expression " three sheets to the wind"?
I would love to create an episode about that expression. Thanks for your feedback. Meanwhile I found an article that explained it quite well en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/three_sheets_to_the_wind
Got to be the most beautiful view of traditional boats sailing that I've seen. Thank you.
It is a spectacular sight these old ladies. Thanks for watching :)
This is really awesome, I’m a historian, doing some maritime history, and it never ceases to amaze me how ship crews learned what to do and do it often under considerable pressure. It’s little wonder such a culture existed and exists amongst sailors. And no fear of heights! It would be interesting to see a focus video on exactly how to climb and scale - and balance all the way up there! Must have been a terrifying thing to learn!
Hi Audrey! Thank you for watching! Its is deffinetly a topic worth taking up, the climb, harness or not, hos to Secure and the cause of accidents. I’ve Got some interesting things coming. But if you have inputs and perhaps some interesting research i’d love to know about it to create better videos. All the Best! Simon
Thank you for sharing the process of tacking a full square rigger. A new world you have opened up for me.
Thanks for the positive feedback im glad you learned something :)
Really well explained. You are a talented teacher.
Thank you Joerg for the positive feedback it really means alot!
What a joy any kind of sailing is, especially as one learns and becomes progressively more proficient, wether on a wind-surfer, sail boat or a yacht. This presentation of Fulrigger sailing experience, so beautifully coached and explained, was wonderful. I was fully there engaged and enthralled and part of the company. Brilliant in every aspect, thank you.
Thank you Geoff, your feedback is very appreciated!! :) I’m so glad it is watched and enjoyed! Thank you!
Thank you form filming this!!
It was a Wild Day! I was so close to take the GoPro in my pocket, was afraid the sail would knock it off my head.. I’m glad I didn’t!!
Great video!
Thank you Jakob :)
This is great stuff! Please keep it coming
