The Cherry Boys - Time To Grow Up
An early Cherry Boys demo recorded at the Open Eye studio in Liverpool.
A very sophisticated sound for such a young band putting modern music to shame. Hope you enjoy it!

The Cherry Boys - In The Dark
Переглядів 383Рік тому
In The Dark was written by John Byrne for the Cherry Boys and despite being a staple of the bands live set never made it onto any of the bands official releases. This recording was done for the John Peel show in 1982. I’ve uploaded it with some period imagery of Liverpool and I hope it brings back some memories for some of you!

A great song written by John Byrne and performed by The Cherry Boys for the bands second John Peel session in 1982. In total 4 songs where recorded for the session, these being: Only Fools Die I'll Keep Moving Nightmare In The Dark All four songs were written by John Byrne (aka John Cherry) with 'Only Fools Die' being released as a single in the fall of 1982.

The Cherry Boys performing their 1983 single 'Kardomah Cafe' live on BBC 2 - a fantastic record that never got the recognition it deserved. The single was however released in Spain and performed much better peaking at Number 6 in the charts.

Thanks so much Joseph.Another piece of the cherry puzzle is unveiled.Love the atmosphere of the vid,,rain in monochrome. The song itself is a slow burner, that after the 3-4 play reveals itself in all it's glory. If only the Boys had a sympathetic producer back in the day,who knows how far they could have gone?Keep these pearls coming,Joseph.
Thanks for the comment Ian! This was sadly never released nor recorded for a radio session so it's one of the less known tracks but I love it all the same, a great live track too. And that's the plan for sure. I want to try and get 'She's So Young' uploaded but can't find a version of it. Another one that was never released but certainly deserves to be and hopefully will be an a compilation in the not to distant future.
Excellent
Howie burnin' those drums up!.
All wonderful songs.I would love to hear any of the "Give It Rice" sessions if you have them.Had the tapes back in the day .They are such phenomenal recordings.I wish they would get a proper release some day.
hey Ian, love the stuff you've put up too! Great I see I remember up. And yeah I've got others I think and will get some more uploaded soon
Hi Joseph.Really great to hear from you.I have so many questions regarding The Cherry Boys.I won't bother you here, but would it be ok to ask some questions in a future correspondence? On another matter,i have recently digitised a 41 year old copy of Give It Rice. The quality is pretty good, all things considered. The tracks include "Phone Call",When I Was With Her' and the definitive version of "Don't leave Me That Way".if you have superior versions that would be great. The songs on these recordings knocked me for 6 40 years ago and still sound vital to me.Hoping others think so too.Once again thank you and also for your wonderful vid's of "In the Dark" and "I'll Keep Moving'.Also for helping to keep the Cherry Boys flame burning.@@jrb1677
Hi There Ian, thanks for the message a few months back, I never use this account so please excuse the delay! I'm on facebook if you ever want to ask anything (facebook.com/joseph.byrne.14855). I'd love to hear 'When I Was With Her Again' if you have that one, haven't heard it for years. I have heard that Howie, the drummer of the band, is remixing the songs and so hopefully one of these days we will have a complilation Cherry boy's record out. @@iandarlington3401
Still got the John Peel session on tape along with the EP 'Give It Rice'
Hi Andy.If you still have the Give It Rice tape, can you put it on line? The world needs to hear these sublime recordings.
@@iandarlington3401 Don't think I've got the ways or means to put it on line mate.
Hi Andy,I do have the Ways and Means to put it on line.Would you consider selling the tape to me?I would also need to know the track listing@@andy84933

They really were a great band. Never heard this track so thanks for posting.
Blimey brings back great memories! They were a superb band with high energy and so refreshing at the time. I was friendly with Howie the drummer and spent many hours at Acme drum store. On two occasions I dep'd for Howie when on holiday and enjoyed it. Their original songs were great!
This is brilliant.. Eddie s**t brought me here

Live music!
Thanks for sharing this, they were an amazing band and I still can't understand why someone hasn't compiled all their singles and adding rarities and some live recordings 👌👌👌👏👏👏
Surely one of the great gigs of all time. But what do I know?? 😀 Rice was given.
Hi Dave. What was the rice thing all about ?
@@madtony2531 as far as I know it was a saying they adopted, and the audience picked up on it. Their former manager describes it in his book "Last shop standing " randomly he has become a well known author about record shops! His name is Graham Jones.
@@madtony2531 apparently the audience started chucking rice at them as a laugh, but to such an extent it became a problem with clearing it all up!
@@daverazziemvs6055 Ha ha .OK Thanks mate, cleared that one up lol
I love this! Great bass. I found two Kardomah cafe coffee caddies in a skip. They're from Liverpool and have Union Jacks on, quite rare I think.
If heaven was a song ❤️❤️❤️

I remember the session they did for John Peel. This should have been a hit in UK back in 1983. Byrne went on to enjoy chart success with the La's & Sharrock with Iccicle Works.
Fabulous stuff, !!
The 12" is brilliant.
I was there all those years ago. One of the best Support Bands that I have seen in the Royal Court. Not sure if they were supporting A Flock of Seagulls or Echo & The Bunnymen. Whoever it was they were Great Times. Thanks for posting
Hi Geoff, thank you for the comment and they were supporting A Flock of Seagulls that night

What a great song & performance, wish I could have seen them live. Is there any more live recordings?
I've got more up if you want to check them out too, and I'll be putting more up in the future
What ever happened to Judy and Richard?
So long ago !
Still great without the first minute. John looking a bit Freddie Garrity on this one!

Your very quiet John (unusually for you) in this interview!
John Byrne (later lead guitarist of The La's) being the educated man that he is!
Good to see my very old friend , John Byrne, looking so young and slim on the TV all those years ago. And a great song , that should have been a hit!
That wouldn't be your Dad who would it?😉
it is haha
This is awesome. Do you happen to know what programme this was ?
Looks like the old grey whistle test.
@@DavidB-py8nz would be nice but I don't think so. Sounds live but looks like regional TV of some sort.
It was BBC 2, my best guess is a TV show called Y.E.S as the same set is used in other programs. Hope this helps.
@@DavidB-py8nz Would've been cool to see a Whistle Test show from these guys.
