Where he stops is last exact spot you stopped running. In that exact point you began crouching and had enough time to circle a bit. Still, this has happened to me quite a few times and the alien ends up catching you because he will inspect and reinspect that very small space where you scaped in the last time and still have little space to continue the circling.

It can hear the motion sensor if he's really close, be careful using it while he's around

That's actual thing to lean into boxes and stuff to hide, it's really useful in those situations but here you got unlucky

Sorry to break it to you, but in survival mode, it’s always nightmare mode And story mode it’s a different story My advice practice makes it perfect. Stay in story mode. Be much easier to practice.😅
