Three Houses Burn
On Saturday the 16th of April 1921, a patrol of the Essex regiment under the command of Major A E Percival burned three farmhouses in the Rosscarbery and Kilmeen areas of West Cork. In an evil twist, they forced IRA prisoners and neighbours to carry out the burnings.
Most people are familiar with the fact that Johnny Collins’ house at Woodfield was burned that day, he was a brother of Michael Collins.
However the farmhouses of the Santry family of Castleventry and the Murray family of Reanascreena were also distroyed.
This short film explores the trail of distruction left by the Essex patrol on that Saturday.
It includes rare audio footage of Mary Collins who was a niece of Michael Collins speaking in 1963 about what she witnessed as a ten year old, when her family home was burned in 1921.

Con Murphy - Patriot IRA officer Captain Con Murphy who came from the townland of Ballinroher between Clonakilty and Timoleague was shot dead by the Essex Regiment at Cloundereen near Kilbrittain on Wednesday the 11th of May 1921. Charlie Hurley was the only one in the West Cork brigade area to stand by Tom barry by first bringing him into the brigade since other IRA suspicious of Barry being ex British soldier in WW1 snd and then Hurley promoted Barry to be the training officer of the famous west cork brigade so Hurley s intuition belief in Barry paid off for West Cork and eventually for Ireland
