Our Voices Matter with Linda Lorelle
United States
Приєднався 26 лис 2018
At some point in our lives, we all know what it feels like to be on the outside looking in. To be shunned. To be the outcast. To be the “other”. Business leaders, students, parents, political leaders, educators, doctors, professional athletes, social activists, entrepreneurs, entertainers…everyone you can think of. What are their stories? What “other” experience is seared into their memory and helped shape who they are today?
How did they deal with that painful feeling? What lessons did they learn? How did they turn that negative into a positive that shows up in their professional and personal lives today? How did they overcome being made to feel like the “other”?
No one wants to be the “other”, but we fear what we don’t know, what we don’t understand, and in many cases, what we simply haven’t been exposed to. So let’s go there. It’s time to give each other #permission2speak and have #courage2listen - with an open mind.

How Americans Fearing the Second Trump Presidency are Planning to Emigrate
Now that we know who will occupy the White House for the next four years, the interest in emigrating from the US has skyrocketed.
According to Reuters, Google searches for "move to Canada" surged 1,270% in the 24 hours after the polls closed on the East Coast Tuesday.
Similar searches about moving to New Zealand climbed nearly 2,000% while those for Australia jumped 820%.
And a former guest on Our Voices Matter has received so many inquiries for help about navigating the emigration process, she's planning a LinkedIn Live event to answer them all.
Search for Peace and Autonomy
Elizabeth Silleck LaRue and her husband emigrated from the US to Mexico in late 2022.
She is white. He is Black.
They were tired of feeling unwelcome in their own country, so they left in search of peace and autonomy.
The transition was not easy, but they have never regretted their decision. Especially now.
If you're thinking of leaving the US to live in another country and want to know what it's like, you might consider joining Liz's LinkedIn Live this Monday, November 11th at 1pm CST.
In the meantime, take a moment to watch or listen to her story.
It's one you won't forget.

How to Have a Civil Dialogue About Race - Todd Levinson and André Thomas

In recent weeks, the topic of race surfaced in a particularly ugly manner when former President Donald Trump said Vice President Kamala Harris “happened to turn black.” First of all, that’s not a thing. That being said, it did get the nation talking once again about that dreaded topic at the core of so much that ails us, but we refuse to confront openly and honestly. What would happen if we did...

As a child, I counted the days until my next birthday. Most of us did, tired of hearing “you’re not old enough to do that.” Then we hit a certain age, and all we want to do is roll back the clock. Pursue youth at all costs. Why is that? Who decided that young is good and old is bad? Why have we internalized it to our own detriment? And how do we reclaim aging as a positive force in our lives? As American school children, we learned it by heart, and recited it every day. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…” But how often did we then, and do we now, think about the meaning behind the words? “…one nation. Under God. Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Indivisible What does it mean to be indivisible? It’s a question Denise Hamilton explores with...

It’s been inspiring to see our friends in the LGBTQ community celebrate and be celebrated during Pride Month. Though, I must say I long for the day when we don’t need a specific month to acknowledge the humanity of those who are marginalized. No matter who we love, what our race, how we pray or how we identify, we matter. We are human. We belong. But until that day, I am grateful for each month...

What happened? Other than her paranoia 😂. Nothing
Our obsession with race is killing us. Bigots will be bigots. We have to release ourselves from having to carry the burden of other people's racial aggression. It's not necessary. Still in 2024?? its getting old. Forgot them. Loose the victim mentality and see if it doesn't open you up to meeting people that cherish your presence. Being a victim is a choice and it's not necessary to win this game called life.
good
You people will single handedly make sure that racism exists in perpetuity.
People wanted all the changes regardless if it hurts them . They rather get burn than have woman president. It's called " cutting your nose off to spoil your face"
Hahahaha 🤣 this is hilarious
Nobody's going anywhere. Stop.
I already left because I saw this coming, wanted to get ahead of the wave, and lived in a blue state so my vote wasn't going to swing the election. (Also, apparently americans can still vote from other countries, but you need to mail your vote in like, a month in advance, so I still voted for Kamala)
The lines up at the Canadian border possibly say otherwise. Anyone with duel citizenship and half a brain will likely try to get out now if they can manage it.
I'm so sorry this happened to you & your husband! Will these people ever learn how to behave? This country's ugly underbelly is being revealed all over the place. For shame!
I'm afraid 😐 I need some reassurance....
LOVE THIS!
If DEI is about inclusion, why is it run entirely by women and POC? Looks like they are specifically excluding white males.
Very well articulated 🎉
Excellent ❤. Eye opening. Really enjoyed the conversation. Thank you.
0.018% is not near as prevalent as the ~3% of redheads - that is an argument made in bad faith.
This is a great interview! I can't believe Mr. Keefe answered my email, at a time when I feel quite dismissed. You are both quite inspiring.

Thank you @emilee9053!
Always admired your poise and class, way back then and still do. Thank you for sharing your story. You are an amazing guy and I will always be your friend. Your example did not go unnoticed, 50 years later I still reflect on it. God bless you. Best to family. Hello to Pete.
I went to college with him! I got to see him maybe twice (definitely at least once) before he tried to join ISIS and once afterwards. Everything he stated at the top of the interview is very true: He’s true to his Pakistani/Muslim heritage, and he very much values his family. I remember that he wouldn’t even shake my friend’s hand because it’s haram to physically touch someone of the opposite sex if you’re not married to them (from my understanding; I’m atheist, but I had a lot of Muslim friends in college - many of whom were some of the kindest people I’ve ever met, Asher included). So imagine our surprise when we found out that this guy who wouldn’t even shake my friend’s hand was going to join a terrorist group who besmirches the sanctity of Islam - but as Asher explained in this interview, a combination of vulnerability and propaganda can really warp one’s view of the world and their future path into it. I see people’s lives changed all the time just because of one flick of a switch at their most vulnerable. I’m so happy to see that Asher was able to find his way out of that, because he truly is a good person and represents so much of the good that Islam can bring out of a person. I saw him afterwards in 2018 or 2019 playing badminton at UH with a mutual friend, but idk if he remembered me by then lol, I certainly wouldn’t blame him if he did. As far as I know now, he doesn’t seem to be imprisoned. And I think the Texas judge who only gave him 18 months (especially after reading the judge’s decision/judgment) is very reasonable and open-minded for that. Attempting to join a group like ISIS would reasonably set off alarms in anyone’s head, but I’m so happy to see that Asher was allowed a chance to redeem himself and prove his character - his true, pious character, not one influenced by ill-will.

A tremendous podcast. I saw you speak at the UHCL commencement this past winter and I enjoyed your message. Thanks for this Linda. Rob really spoke many truths here. I appreciate it very much.
So happy to hear that Rob's insights resonated with you. They did with me, as well. The moment I met him I knew I wanted to share his perspectives with the OVM audience. My deepest, sincerest condolences to my long time friend, neighbor, classmate, and teammate. We spent many days at the Campbell house, watching football games, listening to music(Traffic, John Klemmer), and soaking up the pearls of wisdom dispensed by Mr. Campbell, and his many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were always considered "Pillars of the Community". The character, and values of their home are borne out in their progeny Stay Strong James............................."Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled". Much Love, David A. J
I love it! Go girl ❤ I literally just published my 1st book. Big Dreams Little Faith on Amazon. 🙌 God has definitely been working.
Shannon´s got her IQ up in her social sciences and psychodynamics. One key thing missing in full scope is the socioeconomic inequality foundation. Like McDonald´s paying a living wage in Denmark, Germany´s "volks bank" co-ops, and Mondragon´s co-op industrial network in Spain, the need to vent and ignore progressive education reflects psychosocial dynamics in response to control- and exploitation-orientation, that is only secondarily white. Like Japan when US ships arrived, we can organize and shift corp-consumer capacity, from buying organic and Fair Trade once a month to looking into food co-ops and ESOPs, and more. Kudos to Linda Lorelle.
It is a very complex problem with many aspects to it. One big problem is that social media is owned by profit-driven corporations, and they make their earnings through ads. What happens, then, is that the main purpose of social media is to make people see ads. To see ads, the *quantity* of discussion becomes a priority for the owners of these platforms, not quality. So it doesn't matter if people are talking or arguing, whether claims made are factual or imagined. However, what tends to happen in practice is that people with wildly differing opinions and identities arguing creates the longest and liveliest "conversations". What tends to happen is that pseudoscience and bigotry are the best things for advertisers, for profits, but the absolute worst thing for us as humans.
@@GuerillaBunny Média has problems, for sure. However, you’ re slipping into causes and effects without evaluating the bigger picture that governs the lives, conditions, and capacities of people as individuals. Martinez herself is a rich example. Scholar R Wilkinson has some fine talks about socioeconomic inequality and violence, and the US is the extreme worst example of the truth. America the Superpower launched its corporations on the world and after WWII with more aura still, and European etc alongside. Reagan symbolized how the rich formed right wing think tanks, and Reagan started the deregulation to “Greed is good,” Clinton showed how Big Biz also made the Dems dance dereg’ing Wall St, to Bush’s Iraq fantasy of conquest come true in genocide and $2 tn, Obama’s excellence as airbrush, and tRump’s disaster. Inequality as part of anti-social, anti-labor, anti-poor ideology feeds violence of all kinds, domestic abuse, child abuse, on to mass murders, and racism. Connect the dots and get to the heart of things. Ralph Nader tried to organize consumers for years as part of the1960s intensified awareness. Women with Betty Friedan, blacks/Afro-Ams with MLK, Fannie Lou, etc, gays and LGBTQ’s. with Stonewall, etc. Michael Moore gives a good analysis in his film Capitalism, and he looks at a big part of the solution, co-op biz. Any food co-op is a good example. Look into these things and inform yourself. You have a good start.
@@robinhoodstfrancis I'm well aware of the socioeconomic issues, but I got an impression from your original message that you were over-emphasizing them. Perhaps you weren't. It is definitely a foundation, but racism traces centuries into American history. That is another foundation, and a catalyst for socioeconomic inequality. America never truly confronted its racism, and its impact reverberates even today.
GuerillaBunny If you think I’m over-emphasizing the problem of socioeconomic inequality, that requires reflecting on its explanatory power. R Wilkinson has done extensive statististical study, and makes pretty good presentations. It’s pretty stark and clear, however. America’s violence is shocking. Rape was Sharon’s pivotal event. Hollywood’s sex harassment scandal is tame, but noteworthy. Domestic abuse, child abuse, organizations like The Leadership Council on Interpersonal Violence and Child Abuse pull no punches. Mass murder? America is off the charts. And racism? That’s why some solutions are easy, in supporting value-based consumerism as a basic tactic. Food co-ops are a business model of employee and member ownership, and link to ESOPs like Publix ESOP Supermkts that have challenged Walmart’s greedy and harsh and slick behemoth since 2013. Not-for-profits are more empowering sources of news, and campaigns like Greenpeace’s Greener Electronics and Detox My Fashion, Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair, and Public Citizen, started by Ralph Nader. Sierra Club also organizes hikes, and Green America has a credit union campaign and Green Biz listings. Like Stacy Abram’s organized Georgia’s black vote in the GOP’s face, anybody of good will needs to take more responsible actions and connect the dots to get to the heart of the matter, and talk it up. Cheers, good luck, and God bless. Oh, and the 12 step groups rock, as with Al-Anon, etc.
I Love this interview. After feeling like she didn't fit in and feeling less than important and joining a a hate group, she pushed through it and out of it and even has some answers and ways of resolve. She is obviously beautiful inside and out, intelligent, loving and significant. She has my utmost respect and I appreciate her journey which might have fueled her purpose. Thank you Shannon.
Thanks for your comments, Deb. Shannon is truly remarkable. Her voice is more important now than ever, given recent events.
tremendous interview
Thank you.
So beyond grateful for the work you have done to make AJC's America's Table a reality! Our voices DO matter and you have given them a platform to shine. You, Linda, are a gift to Houston - your work, your passion and your vision are extraordinary. Your podcast gives us the opportunity to celebrate our differences and to learn from one another. In this season of gratitude , we can all be thankful for that!
Wow, Ron... I have no words, except very powerful. I think of you often
Is there a list of white supremacist groups in the country somewhere? I'm just about 50 and have never known anyone openly affiliated with one of these groups. Same with the black separatist groups, I have never seen evidence of these with the exception of 1. These are allegedly the two leading hate groups, over 400 between them in this country. Where can we see the names of these groups instead of just a number given to us by authority figures. I think the existence of these groups as they are categorized needs to be looked at to determine whether they are truly hate groups of the kind that they are labelled because I think we are victims of a set of facts/numbers meant to sensationalize and keep us at odds. One of many strategies that intertwine.
This person is very in-touch with themself
She is, and it was a journey for her to get there.
He's really articulate.
I was so moved by this conversation. More people should hear this. I'm surprised anyone put a thumbs down.

Indeed there is, Mark. Thanks for your comment.
I am only now discovering Shannon and her Story. Wow, what a courageous and powerful woman. To "come out" from this dangerous and highly volatile people group who are so negatively affecting masses of very vulnerable people. Kudos, Shannon!
Yes, Robby, Shannon's story should give us all hope. We just have to do the work.
this is probably the best thing ive ever watched
Thank you, Joe. Definitely one of the most important interviews I've ever done, especially given all that has transpired since then, including the Capitol insurrection.
