Frank and Stan Chat
Приєднався 19 чер 2017
Frank Norris and Stan Johnson have been friends since 1995. Both have had successful and lengthy careers in education. Frank was a very senior HMI with Ofsted for 11 years and was the CEO of the Coop Academies Trust for 6 years. Stan was seconded to Ofsted for a year and then returned to headship before working as a senior adviser with Lancashire LA. He has latterly led a successful education consultancy in the North West.Prior to Covid-19 the two gents would meet in Manchester for a pint or two but the pandemic put an end to that. On 1 May 2020, they recorded their first video chat as a way of recording their emotions and reactions to the pandemic. After putting the video on UA-cam as a safe place to store it they realised that some followers began to appear. Now, with over 200 episodes in addition to SPOTLIGHT that have included Professors, CEOs, journalists, teachers, former HMI and education thinkers. The reach of the Frank and Stan Chat stretches from Bogota to Ottawa to Greece.
Frank and Stan Chat No. 208: The Poetry and End of Year Edition with Eric Craven 'The Scouse Poet'
The final chat of 2024 sees Eric Craven 'The Scouse Poet' return for his fourth appearance as a guest on the chat. He reads some of his whimsical poems and Stan offers one to him! We also reflect on five chats drawn from the year that made an impression long after they were broadcast. We have been fortunate to have so many colleagues willing to join our chats each week and as we always say these are the real stars. We have noticed that some very high profile guests often receive correspondingly high viewing and listening figures. We have tried here to highlight guests with a lesser profile but who offer fascinating insights. The chats that are specifically covered in this edition are:
Aelwyn Pugh Edition 187
Emma Ainsworth Edition 195
Dr Vic Carr Edition 207
Neil Sheldon Edition 184
Lisa Lea Weston Edition 176
Have a happy Christmas and a great New Year. We are back on 10th January with guests already lined up into the second half of 2025.
Best wishes

Carolyn is right about the independent schools issue. It is really concerning. Also, there are a number of very small Independent schools with a religious foundation that might be in danger of closing. Then where will the young people end up? More home education? Or disappearing out of sight which is a major safeguarding concern.
Also great that EALC is built on the work in Feltham where the first through school was created. This is great best practice for their neighbours Hounslow, can incorporate this in their Place work at Business in the Community. This is a wonderful convening partnership, which is where the magic happens!
It’s great working on the Act Early model as part of the Education Alliance for Life Chances, in Keighley. It’s wonderful that Lady Lynne Morrison provided some amazing funding to ensure Kathryn was able to complete a bid to become extend our work.
Thank you for your helpful insights. I visited the Keighley work about 6 months ago and was impressed with the way local people were trying to resolve local issues. They were pulling on their strengths. I intend revisiting next year to see how things have developed.
Great interview and guest!
Thank you! We appreciate any feedback.
Thank you for hosting me chaps :)
Our pleasure!
Great conversation, really looking forward to hearing you talk with Michael W
Thank you. Im not going to prepare anything special tbh. Our weekly chats rely on spontaneity but MW did indicate he wasnt going to hold back so let's see where it ends up.
START ITTTTTTTTTT
It's due to premiere on 9th August. We agreed on this slot cos Tom is not around until then and he's keen to support the release with social media activity.
GYATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT pls respond frank and stann @franl
It's really an excellent episode
I am a bit behind on the videos so hopefully this could be on the way, but please frank and stan a book would be fantastic
Please can you pass on my best wishes to Mr Pugh. He taught me music a very long time ago (1980) when I was a pupil at Mold Alun high school. Thanks ☺️
Ofsted are saying they are losing HMI because they can earn significantly more in a MAT as School Improvement Officer or Director etc. They are very often only working with a handful of schools. There is lot of unnecessary duplication in the system. Human Resources leaders being paid high salaries for working with just 10 schools. Expensive private legal firms being paid a fortune to do casework, not to mention things like the purchase of Teslas etc.
Sorry to hear about your loss Frank. This was a good episode. I need to make contact with Sarah about oracy. We are having a drive on this at the moment.
Thank you Neil. Stan apologised for stumping me during the chat but it did allow me to share the sad news. If you need Sarah's contact details then just let me know.
Really enjoyed listening to this! Couldn't agree more about happy culture in schools. Coincidence, I'm currently reading the ultra processed food book, scary! Will look forward to tuning in again! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! We will definitely have the gents back next year, assuming all is well with the video cast and we remain healthy etc.
A really good idea to implement sabbaticals. I'm sure it would help to keep a reducing workforce interested and motivated
Absolutely!
Thankyou for this podcast gents. Eric, I enjoyed your poem Affirmations. Regardless of our age we all benefit from praise and positive acknowledgement. I too remember my favourite primary school teacher. She introduced me to poetry through the book ' Please Mrs. Butler, I loved it!! The lack of minister for disability sadly doesn't surprise me. I personally feel many pupils with SEND are being failed. The increase of suspensions/exclusions is concerning. It's particularly high in relation to pupils with SEND. My daughters school are dishing out 2 day exclusions willy nilly. I have a feeling The Head is one of those actors that slip through!! How I wish my children had Headteachers of your calibre.
Thank you for those kind remarks Chris. Much appreciated.
Read Sameena´s book. It is really illuminating and everything in it is research based.
Absolutely spot on Meena. Was great to chat with you properly in Salford recently. The local and regional skills needs are not being met by the curriculum and the accountability system is not working locally at all.
Great 👍
Great chat, wished it was longer! Inspirational
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely to see Aelwyn! He was at Ofsted when I was and I also met him when he was inspecting schools that I was working with as an LA advisor. He is a brilliant and intelligent inspector as well as a fellow musician.
Great guest, thought provoking chat about AI and the value of verbal feedback.Thank you.
Fascinating discussion about AI. totally agree with Frank and stan’s comments on attendance, what is really galling is the current government do not see their part in the attendance issue, the pressures on the frontline in Ed, obsession with testing, dictating the curriculum, they have made schools a place young people don’t want to be, dispute schools best efforts
I agree fully with your comments about schools don't feel quite as welcoming as they used to be. Too much is driven by the accountability Fwk, unfortunately. We still need accountability but it needs to be used differently and with a lighter touch in order that schools can begin to re-engage with those who have lost their willingness to attend. Sir Kevin Collins saw this coming a few years ago but govt unwilling to invest in education then and since, so we are reaping what we sowed.
Great edition!
Thanks!
Very pleased to hear the proportionate stance on hugging children - I saw the same tweet as Stan and commented on it. Our Guidance for Safer Working Practice is clear that rejecting a child who needs comfort or safe touch would be emotionally harmful; there are safe ways to touch children and it is important that staff have a framework / guiding principles www.saferrecruitmentconsortium.org/_files/ugd/f576a8_0d079cbe69ea458e9e99fe462e447084.pdf >> Carolyn
Would mind if I shared the link?
Also, have we got a revisit date for you on Frank and Stan Chat? I can't recall.
@@frankandstanchat5 absolutely fine 👍
No - wasn't sure if you would have me back!
Thank you so much for sharing, fantastic conversation
Glad you enjoyed it!
So lovely watching these and Stan pleased to have made 6 episodes and now nearer 200
Another great chat reflecting on the big themes in education with fascinating insights! Thank you!
Thank you John. Stan and I are pleased we continue to have relevance and give a voice for those in the profession who are unable to get heard.
we have the same name, same first and last name thats weird
This is a great edition - congratulations to Stan & family x
Thank you so much!
Thanks for considering my question about Chat GPT. Personally, I’m still weighing it all up but I’ve no doubt that it’s a game changer with enormous potential for learning and widespread future consequences for our colleagues and our young people.
We are embracing Chat GPT - we're using it to generate phonics decodable books for adult readers, so they can have instant access to texts at their early reading level about topics on the news that day, or about their favourite interests, etc.
One of the best Frank and Stan - more like this???
Thank you Ian.

Great stuff
A fabulous discussion. Thank you. Taking on ANY school is playing Russian Roulette with your career. 😏
Thank you for your kind comments. Agree with the sentiment. I'm not sure I would have gone down the leadership route if my career started 10 years later.
Played cricket against Nick back in our youth and he bowled a "heavy rock". Great to see that he is doing well and designing schools for the future.
I remember getting hit round the park by you many times Jon. I hope you are well. Many thanks for your comment.
Enjoyed watching...all the way through: light- hearted without being trivial; -personable presenters; interesting range of topics although I did feel that one or two could have been developed further. A minor quibble though-; very enjoyable overall...well done to all involved
Colin, many thanks for your helpful and encouraging comments. We are planning to invite Nick back in Feb 2023 to develop some further issues he raised after we stopped recording.
@@frankandstanchat5 sounds like a good plan. I'll look forward to them.
Great conversation. Thank you Frank and Stan and Sir David. Love your observations on the Oak Academy. It would be good to have further discussion on Ofsted and the curriculum.
Our pleasure!
😀
Wow this is a blast from the past, Mr Norris and Miss Denby (sorry if feels too weird to call you by first names even after 30 odd years). I think I was probably in Miss Denby's first year when she joined Millbank Junior bank in the late 80's. Both great teachers and have a lot of respect for them even after all this time. Good to see you're doing well for yourselves.
Chris, thank you so much for reaching out. I kept touch with Ms Denby and supported her at her final school in Liverpool. What are you up to? Appreciate your kind words on the teaching etc.

The impact of covid and poverty - how children are coping with life - some major areas of focus for inspectors as opposed to 'knowledge' and inspectors supporting the political pretence that covid is over...abso-bloody-lutely!!!

LULA ESTADISTA PT
A great chat. It touched on so many vital aspects of education, school policy, inspection as well as the link between local authorities and their schools and other establishments. Knowing Laura too, the links were well made between local politics, school governance. It is clear that the daily link with children is vital, from a safeguarding perspective. School leadership is so much more than the aspects that Ofsted deem important and report.
Thank you for your supportive comments partic over the current focus of Ofsted's inspection fwk. I am undertaking a retrieval; exercise of around 100 recent inspection reports and will post the analysis outcomes in a week or two. With the suspension of inspections next week it is a good time to take stock.
Thank you so much for this. It’s so refreshing to hear that those inside Ofsted are somewhat concerned about the accuracy of judgements and the impact of the process on schools and ITT providers. It would be great to hear your views on the way Ofsted handles complaints as that concerns many school leaders.
Thank you for your kind comment. I will be discussing how Ofsted deals with complaints in this week's edition.
