How was Betty so ahead of her time, how did she know it was a stupid and discriminatory rule not to allow girls to wear shorts and pant? I went to school in Russia in the 90s and we were not allowed to wear pants to school as well. You would get written up for it, and none of us thought that it was unfair and sexist 🤦🏻‍♀️

I really enjoyed this book as well as this interview. Whitlock did an excellent job of comparing our countries failure in Vietnam with out failure in Afghanistan. I also really liked how he compared Saigon to Kabul in the final days of Vietnam and Afghanistan. Whitlock did an excellent job in highlighting the lack of understanding of Afghan language, culture, politics, religion, and society through three presidential administrations. Whitlock also shows the negative outcome of the endless stream of money America poured into Afghanistan to no avail. The constant stream of money lead to widespread corruption throughout Afghanistan. I was very glad to get some clarity from Whitlock about the “Lessons Learned” interviews. I thought that was an excellent question the interviewer asked and provided some much-needed context about the primary source for this book. The “lessons Learned” interviews were very refreshing as all of the sources were primary and from the top members of America’s political and military personnel responsible for the overseeing of the war in Afghanistan. This was not only an eye-opening book but also an eye-opening interview. Whitlock did an excellent job at expanding upon all questions asked and provided much-needed insight and clarity into the mishandling of the war in Afghanistan in this book. The interviewer also did a great job at asking Whitlock his opinion about the recent exit of the U.S. military from Afghanistan. I highly recommend this book and interview for anyone who wants to learn more about America’s involvement in Afghanistan.
