Christian Classical Education and the Church - Word at the Middle of the Week - January 22, 2025
Pastor Gjerde continues the conversation surrounding education and the Church asking again: "Why should the Church be involved in education at all?"
In Psalm 8 we see how faith is to seek knowledge of the world, a world God made and still sustains by His Word. However, when it comes to faith or the Church, people can see faith and the Church as an outlet for assorted "spiritual goods," not necessarily as something that has to do with all of life. The Church exists to teach all of reality, not teach some esoteric truths that aren't applicable to everyday life as faith seeks knowledge, to knew reality as intended by God. The Church also, out of love for the world, seeks to acquire and share such knowledge with as many people as possible, that they too would have their minds formed in such a God honoring and pleasing way.
Classical education also has the benefit of of honoring the parental vocation of raising children. Churches engaged in classical education do not seek to replace parents, acting as surrogate parents or family, but to emphasize those vocations and estate.
Classical education provides a certain kind of education that doesn't seek to denigrate public or parochial schools, but provide another option, an older option that served the Church well for generations in helping youth strive towards virtuous learning and living.
Next week we'll talk about what education is to look like when the Church undertakes such an important task for the sake of it's people.

Pastor Gjerde discusses the importance of the Church's role in education, particularly as we see it in contemporary Christian Classical schools. Why should churches involve themselves in education? We see an important reason for this in the beginning of John 17, vv. 1-5, Jesus' "high priestly prayer." Of particular significance is v. 3: "This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true G...

Pastor Gjerde goes through the 7 "O Antiphons," a collection of verses used in the beloved hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." 1. O Wisdom 2. O Adonai (the Hebrew word for Lord) 3. O Root of Jesse 4. O Key of David 5. O Dayspring 6. O King of the Nations 7. O Emmanuel "In the twelfth or thirteenth century, these antiphons were paraphrased into metrical, poetic verses which became the hymn, “O Come...

Today we look at a few passages from the New Testament as we prepare ourselves this Advent for the upcoming Christmas season. John 1:1-8 highlights the divinity of the Son as well as the important role John the Baptist played in the story of redemption. Luke 1:5-7 shows us that John the Baptist's birth is grounded in the three important estates of creation - government/nation (Herod), marriage/...

Pastor Gjerde shares some reflections on "snow," not as we find it outside, but as we find it referred to in holy Scripture. We first come across "snow" in Exodus 4:6, an image of leprosy and accursed flesh become pure by the word and power of the Lord. The last mention of "snow" is in Revelation 1:14, used to portray the hair of the One like a Son of Man, the resurrected Lord speaking to John ...

Pastor Gjerde concludes our current Bible study where we have been focusing on loving the Church. Today we focus on the crucifixion of our various loves that we might truly love the body of Christ, a new family, the Church. The three main realities we are in the midst of: Family, Government, Church. The cross is laid upon both family and government that we, the Church, we be mindful of the new ...

Pastor Gjerde continues with our next session of the current Bible study where we have been focusing on loving the Church. What does it mean to be a community in Christ? What is getting in our way of looking at the Church, the body of Christ, as the formative influence of our communal identity? The Church is not a venue or source of good things, with "me" being an independent purveyor of such g...

Pastor Gjerde continues with our next session of the current Bible study where we have been looking at the importance of loving the Church. Pastor Gjerde continues our Bible study discussing the importance of loving the Church. In Colossians 3:12-15 and 1 Corinthians 13 Saint Paul addresses congregational love, love that is expressed between brothers and sisters in Christ, not love in general but a love directed to the saints of God. A Christian is to guard themselves from any sort of thought of vengeance or retribution. A Christia...

Pastor Gjerde continues our new Bible study discussing the importance of loving the Church. Far from being a commodity to purchase and enjoy at one's leisure, the Church can be and is so much more. What does it mean to be a "good" Christian? Yes, love of neighbor is important. Yes, faithful attendance is essential. Above all, what makes one "good" is to tightly connected to Jesus, receiving His...

Thank you, Pastor. I have been Lutheran all of my life, but now in my older years I TRULY wish we had a good way to Praise Mary daily. I have trouble getting 100% behind the Catholic Rosary (even though I realize you should contemplate the mysteries, 10 Hail Mary's per mystery still seems like repetition) but I find I envy the Catholics for their freedom to revere The Holy Mother. If you have any recommendations I would be more than happy to hear them. Thank you f ok r this wonderful video and your work you do daily.

The first verse of the Hail Mary is biblical and is fine for meditation, especially when included with the creeds and the Our Father. The second verse of the Hail Mary is controversial in that the words "pray for us sinners" is an invocation which begins the process of intercession on which you are counting on her merits to help you. This is not a practice expressed in the bible. Christ alone is the intercessor. However invoking Mary in the second verse to, instead, "pray with us sinners" is glorifying God and not Mary. That is similar to when we invoke the saints of heaven in the Divine Service, Preface to the Sanctus, to sing with us "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth" in glorifying God. The direction of our prayer in both cases is to God, not to Mary or the saints in heaven.

The woman is religion, all relion involved in politics why/ because she's pictured as a prostitude cheating on God by trying to enforce her religious viewpoints on others through her influencing politicians to enforce her point of view rather on Jesus door to door ministry which allows freedom of will. In politics people must conform to mans law and that's why shes cheating on God's will and enforcing her religious opinion influenced by Satan. so all religion sitting on the back of this political beast is Babylon the Great, the mother of the harlets. How do I know, for one thing , Neither will there ever be the voice of a bride or a bride groom in her anymore. People get married by religion, right, then it's religion, false religion trying to ride our government that revelation is revealing is this woman that left Jehovah God for their belief in man's governments that will eventually turn on her and burn her with fire, yes they will throw out their cross idols to the curb or face destruction.

You cannot understand Chapter 10 of Revelation unless you understand where Jesus is in Chapter 4. Consider the following 1) Hebrews 1:3 Jesus is the RADIANCE of the Father. 2) the emerald is the stone of the tribe of Judah in the breastpiece of the high priest 3) No one comes to the Father except through the Son. It is the single best description of the relationship between the Fahter and the Son in the entire bible. Now apply this to CHapter 10 and you will see how it correspons to 1 Thess 4: 16

@RaymondSaint When I was a seminarian at Concordia-Fort Wayne, I spent a summer on retreat at St Augustine's House and several other times with fellow seminarians. The Angelus is prayed each day at 3PM. Also, I served as a parish worker in Brooklyn, N.Y.for 2 years at St Paul's Church and also occasionally went to the daily Mass at St John the Evangelist when Richard Neuhaus and John Heinemann were pastors. Both these Lutheran parishes honored Mary and prayed the Angelus on certain Marian feast days. All these events were back in the early 1970s. I went on to Christ Seminary before deciding not to enter the priesthood. Also, recall attending a Lutheran Liturgical Institute conference at Valparaiso when Arthur Carl Piepkorn spoke on devotion to Mary. At the evening vespers, the Orthodox Hail Mary was sung. There are other examples of Lutherans calling upon the saints to pray for us, including at the Shrine of St Birgitta in Vadstena, Sweden. ua-cam.com/video/SVvLD9jYdl8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SaintAugustine%27sHouse ua-cam.com/video/PpbEioYtleE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BethlehemLutheranChurch%2CHickoryNC orthodoxwiki.org/Hail_Mary ua-cam.com/video/g_aykCYP8u4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Jan-ErikNylund A classmate is the pastor emeritus at Trinity, where they venerate the Mother of God in the eucharist prayer ua-cam.com/video/jb-8Q2cWDNg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TrinityLutheranChurchandSchool Sisterhood of Mary singing praise to Mary ua-cam.com/video/o9SEHnjKSts/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Cana%C3%A3noBrasil More hymns praising Mary ua-cam.com/video/CTYfKJwyMao/v-deo.html&ab_channel=St.MarksLutheranChurchBaltimore ua-cam.com/video/ITzmQO9wlFc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=FirstLutheranChurch There are many more examples since the Book of Concord acknowledges that Mary prays for the Church.
