#23 Al Di Meola: Legendary Guitarist on Music, Resilience, and Legacy
Every guest on this podcast is a legend in their own way, and Al Di Meola is undeniably a living legend. Mention "Friday Night in San Francisco" to any guitarist, and you'll likely spark memories, anecdotes, and a deep sense of admiration.
For my conversation with Al, I had planned to gently ask about the heart attack he suffered on stage in Romania last year. However, after simply asking, "Al, how are you?" he shared the entire story in vivid detail.
Throughout this candid interview, Al surprised me multiple times. He revealed that rejection was a significant motivator early in his career. He was once kicked out of a band, only to see the group reassembled a week later. He channeled that pain into laser focus and determination. I'm always fascinated by how exceptional guitarists like Al achieve such hyperfocus and push their boundaries.
As a bonus at the end of the episode, you'll hear a few questions from Harry Valentino, the guitarist of High Fade. Harry previously shared that Al Di Meola is his favorite guitarist. Thank you, Harry, and thank you, Al, for this inspiring conversation!

Where I used to discover new artists through friends and often by reading the credits in CD booklets, these days I mostly rely on algorithms. It might not sound as romantic, but it does lead to some fantastic discoveries. That’s how, sometime last year, Oz Noy came onto my radar. His name sounds like a character straight out of L. Frank Baum’s famous book. His playing is just as imaginative and...

#21 High Fade's Harry Valentino on Building a Band That Lasts: We Can Do Anything!

Some bands make you smile, give you energy, and make you feel alive. For me, that band is High Fade. 🎶 Playing as a power trio (drums, bass, guitar), they bring raw energy and chemistry to every performance. Guitarist Harry Valentino doesn’t just play; he’s part of the rhythm section with his dynamic, groove-driven style while also shredding incredible solos. 🎸 High Fade often takes to the stre...

"This is actually my favorite guitarist," I remember Plini saying these words during a show in Nijmegen (yes, the town where Eddie Van Halen grew up) and thought, “Hm, I should check this guy out.” I’m glad I did! "I'm trying to be less melancholic." These were the words Jakub spoke just before our interview during a workshop at the Guitar Summit in Mannheim, and they resonated in my mind. Why?...

Scoop alert! Scoring scoops isn’t exactly my goal during the conversations for this podcast. When Nick Johnston announced two new projects during the recording, my initial reaction was simply excitement. It wasn’t until the editing phase that I realized: “Hey, this is news!” Nick revealed that he has started a band with superstar drummer Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson). He’s also ...

Nothing harder than not throwing in that thing you've been practicing forever lol especially if it looks or sounds really cool
Perhaps the most intelligent and sophisticated guitar player of the scene at the moment
Nice Interview✨❤️
Great convo. I was left wanting for more.
I never expected him to sound like that. I just discovered him recently
Sounds like something jimmy page would say. It’s exactly right
Reinier is a great musician and composer.
Thank you very much for this interview! So inspiring!
this was an amazing interview, I've been following Jakub for only 2 years now but he is genuinely the best musician I have ever heard, thank you for this!
@@krozz420 thanks for your kind words. I agree: he is an amazing musician. And also super kind.
beautiful conversation with an even more beautiful person thank you both. As an aspiring guitarist, I’d love to have a chat with Harry one day:)
@@viperize813 Thanks! I'm really grateful Harry wanted to share his story. I truly believe they'll grow really big.
A thoughtful, unrushed, organic conversation - delightful to listen to. Thanks for capturing and sharing this.
@@nathanmarentette4972 Hey man, thanks, that's so kind of you to say! Feel free to share wherever of course...
this podcast i so underrated
This is the most insightful interview with Plini that I've seen. Thank you!
@@luketylerguitar Thanks Luke!
That's a great take. He's like the Yoda of guitar. I find what he's discussing one of the hardest things to do. How to not force ideas in that you're practicing, but somehow letting them organically show up in your live playing.
Great interview. Im really excited about the upcoming band with Gavin. This might be a New great band just like The aristocrats or something. Loved to see a very humble Nick. He's a great guy.
He’s a singular talent. We’re so lucky that he’s also generous and gracious with his time. So grateful for the opportunity to hear him speak. Great interview. 🙏
Great to see an interview with Reinier in english! Thanks!
Beautiful Tommy
Who is he talking about? Ellis...?
That debut album.. 💜 Fantastic player. Thanks 🙏
<3
This is exactly how I feel when I tell my classmates about Dream Theater
Nice! well appreciated to get a little bit deeper with the composer you like :D thanks for the podcast!
You've got a nice voice
I love the part where he talks about missing that note at his concert as the best part of the night. That's so great
IMHO, this interview should have a huge number of thumbs up. Thank you❤ Look forward to watching your conversation with Dawes next.
The ~45 minute length of an album came from the amount that would fit on a vinyl LP.
Woah where have this podcast been? Love Plini and his music, I went to the Aus tour in Sydney early this year and it was probably my favorite concert ever.
what a lovely man thank you for great interview
Would of been better with more left hand ! Love this song of his 🫶🏻❤️
Great interview. I don’t know any other famous musician who can be so open and bare all. Paul is a legend and an inspiration to us all. R.I.P Sean and Sean ✌️✌️✌️
Great interview - Richard is a real master of his craft. Geweldige muzikant en mens.
Yep, exactly where I’m at
This man is so gifted..!!...🎶🎶
Mike Dawes is a legend
DeWolff is one of the best bands of our time. I try to visit every gig possible. Thanks so much.

Randy Rhoads WAY Better.
Nah.
The closet door remains open.
Theo’s the best!!!

@@ericnicolleau4331 Thanks Eric. Really privileged to have seen Shawn live. Such an incredible musician...
🙌❤️
And I’m waiting for that video song
Thanks for sharing this… it’s good to see a great friend ❤TE
Saw Plini live recently. I love Plini and JHL is just as good and might even be technical better than Plini. Plini is a great song writer and musician of course.
@@yeptoo1148 I really like the part of the show where they both improvise solo's. Such a different approach and choices, but both phenomenal!
