Two NEW Common Sunfishes: Reclaimed Status!
Caught a Longear in Texas? Plains Longear Sunfish (Lepomis aquilensis) is the new official species within the Longear Sunfish Complex. Lepomis solis, the Gulf Longear Sunfish, has also been split from the Longear Sunfish (Lepomis megalotis). These species were elevated to species status in the 1800’s and now have been re-elevated to species status. Among many other common names, the Plains Longear may also be referred to as the Rio Grande Sunfish and the Gulf Longear Sunfish as the Swamp or Swampland Longear Sunfish. The Ozark and Ouachita lineages did not become species.
Identification of these species apart from the other Longear Sunfish Complex species is tricky; location is your best friend. Between the introgression and hybridization in range overlaps, sometimes a genetic test is the only reliable method for ID (if even possible). The maps of the location of these fishes are approximate, yet still fairly precise.
Front Cover and Inside Photo Credits: Though without a requested citation, thanks to Nick Loveland on iNaturalist.org for posting his L. aquilensis photos as Public Domain. Thanks to Ray Wilhite for his L. solis images from Alabama. (I do plan on getting a bunch of photos/video within the next year on these two new species.)

This video is extremely detailed and very helpful! Thank you!
Use a longer rod to increase the rod angle
Thank you for making this!
Awesome video! Hope to see more of the longear complex split to species, along with Dollar sunfish hopefully one day
Great video! Glad to see/hear an explanation of this all. Although, I've got to say that your map for Louisiana is lacking a range in the New Orleans Metro area where I consistently catch what I used to think were "Longear" even though they look different from the ones I catch in the waters of the parishes on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain. The ones I'm catching in the brackish water marina of the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and in the drainage canals of Jefferson Parish, also south shore look more like the L. aquilensis species. I will be glad to send you photos and/or take you fishing down here when you come for the conference next year. Regardless, thank you for your time.
I personally don't mind hybrids. They tend to be bigger and have more vigor. Just an overall healthier fish usually.
Great video! There's not a whole lot of YT videos with good info on Buffalo fish, they're considered trash fish around here. The river I frequently visit is called the Meremac River after the Buffalo fish. Meremac in native vernacular in the 17th century meant "ugly fish" and you can frequently catch 15 - 20 pounders on the southern arm with just a can of corn.
Wichita is not pronounced as Wha cheetah. It is pronounced as Wash a taw as in Wichita KS. Wichita is not pronounced as Oh cheetah. It is pronounced as Oh ash a taw as in Ouachita MO or the native American tribe.
Ive been telling people they were different fish for YEARS
Crazy it’s already been 2 years since your last longear species video, I’ve been excited for longears in Texas video
Right...time flies! I'll excited to catch some Longear in Texas soon.
Ive caught and pictured thousands of longears in the dfw area if you want any of the pictures!
Sometimes sunfish cross with other species. Ive caught them before. Like a cross between a redear and bluegill.
Yup, most definitely they hybridize in this genus.
Thanks for the quality explanation!
My pleasure, Matthew.
Very interesting to know, love them all, beautiful fish.
Indeed. It's a cool genus.
Very informative thank you
Glad you found it informative.
Very cool info!
Glad you think so!
Interesting
Indeed
Some fascinating news! I can’t help but wonder if someday someone might revisit the sunfish collections at the Smithsonian. In particular, I’ve always been intrigued about what modern genetic analysis might disclose about that long ago “species,” McKay’s sunfish (listed in Jordan & Evermann “The Fishes of North America”). In light of the diversity now recognized in the longear group, perhaps a fresh look may be in order?
I looked back after reading your comment. The study analyzed DNA from a number of museum collections but not any from the Smithsonian. So, yeah, definitely potential to tap into some other old specimens.
Great job!
Thanks, Donald!
Nice work 🍀
Thanks much, Asi!
My Florida strain Largemouth Bass spawned at 8" and 1 year old the next year at 2yrs they spawned twice.
Glad to see more quality information. So much knowledge!
Thanks much for always having a good comment for KNFS vids!
Good video. All of this reminds me that taxonomy is as much an art as it is a science.
I'll agree with that!
I'll update the website guide as time goes by and I collect more information and images. Cheers!
Carolina rig is best for long cast?
I got a thirty-pound Smallmouth Buffalo this summer on 6 lb test, spinning gear, and a Ned rig. It was one hell of a fight. The Smaller hook is definitely a necessity.
hey, just found your channel. I fish for green sunfish around the lakes of maryland. They are so much fun to catch and they look so cool.
been obsessed with experimenting on my drop shot rigging and retrieves for the smallmouth bass in my lake. i appreciate you breaking it all down in this video!
I caught a tiger muskie today! Awaesome!!!!
Just found a pond loaded with them. They are super active and fun to catch. Used an H&H spinner
I fish little Miami & mad river and catch them all day it’s crazy hybrids all around 937 rivers
Which is better carolina or this drop shot from not getting snag?
After getting back into fishing since a kid. It's been 10 years. Trout fishing was my thing on ultralight and light gear for a while. Then I started bluegill fishing a little because I knew they were also good eating. The first green sunfish I caught were on bass or smallmouth lures and they were decent size. I thought they were smallmouth bass because there mouth was so much bigger than a bluegill and they were shaped a bit differently. I caught one the other day on a top water popper .
Can you do male and female for them? Some are easy but for example black bass you can’t really tell.
dang u r friends w the fish do u bass fish? do u recommend going thru the gill plate to to remove a "guthooked" bass?
that White Sucker looks allot like a Common Barbel without the barbels
these fishes really suck lol 😂
"two of the top three largest SUCKERS in the world" What hav they done to deserve this?? 😅
"those black and smallmouth buffalo... SUCKERS" lol Poor fishes got a super cruel last name 😢
btwi hope UA-cam wouldn't censored off my comment for saying the fishes' namesake
Are these guys in Iowa?
Tie a barrel swivel at the end less like to fail than a surgeons not
Math and fishing? Yep this is my guy.
Hello! I absolutely love your videos and the care you take in preserving the fish in catch and release. one question regarding hook sizes: do these sizes apply to circle hooks as well? I use them to reduce gut hooking and have been struggling to find the right size. I mainly creek fish, so I'm catching a variety of fish that are about the size of a decent sized redbreast. Any tips as well? Keep it up!
Yeah I have to agree…Well Done!
New subscriber here. Your video was very informative. I just caught a small warmouth this past week and had misidentified it, thinking it was a rockbass. I brought it home to put in my aquarium. In just a few hours, it was eating chunks of worms.
good stuff man! loved the video. That was a cool mission. I have picked up fishing for sunfish after many years off...had to relearn all the taxonomy - which led me to this guide...nailed it!
My friends and I were fishing for bluegill (in a spot we thought only bluegill lived) and were absolutely shocked when we pulled a green sunfish out of the water, had no idea what it was! Thanks for the great info on these fish!
Love the bumper music! Very 1978 of you.
ASMR voice, math, AND fishing… 🤤🤤
can you do a drop-shot rig for micro fishing ?
Pick up a fly rod bro, you’ll love it. No need for bait.
