Hi everybody, lots of tapping today! This is the guitar solo from Autograph's “Turn Up The Radio” originally performed by guitarist Steve Lynch! This guy is very skilled in 8 fingers tapping technique and in the middle 90's made an instructional videotape, “The Two Handed Guitarist” that helped me a lot with my tapping. So let's tune our guitar half a step down (Eb, Bb, Gb, Db, Ab, Eb) and let's start! We are in A Mixolydian so D Major scale.
PERFORMANCE NOTES FOR YOU:
- SLIDES in BAR 1: take a look at this first phrase, even if it's divided in triplets you can see 2 notes per string, consider all these couples of notes and slide in up the first one each time, learn the whole sequence then play it in triplets.
- INTERVALS in BAR 7: this phrase is particular and can be quiet tricky in alternate picking. Steve plays mixed ascending and descending 3ds and a couple of 5ths and this involves a lot of string skipping. I suggest a couple of things: first you can learn on string at time, like 1 note on the 1st string than 2 notes on the 3rd string than 2 notes on the 1st and so on; then practice the sequence very slow and slant your pick in the direction of every string change (from my video you can see I slant the pick upwards when I'm moving from the 1st string to 3rd and downwards when I move to an higher string).
- 1st LICK in TAPPING SECTION, BARS 9-12: if you look a triplet at once this is the classic Van Halen's tapping triplets, first note is tapped than pull off to the lowest note on the index finger then hammer on on the middle note... But Steve alternates the tapped note with a diatonically higher note at each triplet, so he alternates one tapping with right hand's middle finger and the other with right hand pinkie. You can also play the whole sequence tapping just with your middle finger, you will jump between two frets at every triplet. If you wanna play with two right hand fingers be careful tapping with your pinkie, this tap requires an accurate setting of the finger because it is a weak finger that we never use, so let's place it well like a "hammer" and tap strong. I pull off both tapping downwards with my right hand but you can also pull off upwards.
- 2nd LICK in TAPPING SECTION, BARS 13-15: this lick involves bending and slides with your tapping hand, you need to consider each movement at once like tap the 1st note, bend and release then pull off the next note then bend and release with your left hand, then tap the next note, then slide with your right hand finger up and down, then pull off, then bend and release with your left hand and so on. Each tap bending is helped with left hand bending (like bending with left hand the same interval in the note your hand is in that is the note of your next pull off). Be careful between bars 14 and 15, tap 12th fret, bend, hold bending, tap 15th fret with your pinkie (you can also slide up your middle finger from 12th fret) then pull off and the string is still bended.
- 3rd LICK in TAPPING SECTION, BAR 16: this is the last lick of the solo, is something like trilling a couple of notes while whammy bar is going down, but you go down with both hands fret by fret. For the right hand is quiet easy to jump from a fret to the previous, for the left hand is more like a unique slow slide down, is more a rhythmic effect of how much you slide down your left hand finger "a tempo"!
