The UK/Europe distributer for Pilot has long taken the piss when it comes to prices (don't check out a certain Shrewsbury shop as they have the 823 at just £280). On Platinum, I think they have dropped the President, they have just gradually would down the countries they supplied to with the US being first and us about 12 months back. Not sure where you found your price though as I literally just checked Amazon and the few on their are £170+, though that's still less than when they were readily available in the UK as I seem to remember they were around the £220 mark. Personally not a fan of the pencil like feedback of Platinums, but love the fine-medium and larger nibs from Pilot. My 823 (medium nib) has been a long term workhorse for me.

Thank you Dan! I don't own a Montblanc pen but I do have a Platinum President and a Pilot Custom 823. The President was dry as toast out of the box (new old stock) but once I did a bit of adjustment with a feeler gauge, it became wet and luscious. The Pilot is just a beast of a writer. It sat for 6 months inked, started right up, no problem. Same with the Platinum. I would buy either again but I doubt I will buy a second of either pen. One is wonderful, more would be gluttony.

Thanks for this review. I was intending to look for a second-hand Montblanc 146 at the autumn London pen show but didn't in the end. I'm sort of glad now. I have started to take against piston fillers (having just spent 2 days cleaning one out!), and that combined with the dryness of the nib you describe, makes me feel this wouldn't quite hit the spot for me.

My understanding is this is available in a non-cigar, cylindrical shape? I love this, but even in the beautiful teal, it’s a bit too close to the MB 149 for me not to feel like a fraud using it.

The Chinese pen makers are the disrupters of the ridiculously inflated European "luxury" pen market. Is a MB 15 times as good a pen as this lemon? Dial uber eats and have a snack while you're thinking it over.

Can you buy. a double broad kaweco nib and or. a stub for this?

Its a laquered brass pen.

Sold mines too, I had it in “B” and it wasn’t as stub like as I was hoping, I will re buy it someday in “F or EF” love the pen. So many other pens, M1000 and maybe a Bronze Age first.

Thanks for the great review, yours is the only one I can find on this overlooked pen. I own one and my only grief is that, over long writing session, the section can become loose, as, with the body, it is made of metal. Maybe an o-ring would improve it, but I am not sure about the look of it.

You mentioned adding more clips to have up to 5… any idea where you can order the clips from? Thanks!

Greetings from Australia. I was just about to press the button on this pen. Now I'm not too sure. The pen retails for about $72 Aud with a Niganata broad nib. (The most expensive nib option). EBay Australia. Was there a nib option given for your pen, or did you get the basic nib. Did you ever get it to write? Thanks for the video.

This review is spot on with my experience with the Loom. I appreciate that its not just another traditional design and the nib is a pleasure. HOWEVER THE SECTION IS A DEALBREAKER. I simply cannot hold onto the section. Its too slippery despite the ridges. Holding chrome is less slippery IMO. I feel I am constantly adjusting/fighting the pen which soon becomes unnecessarily laborious. Every so often I give it another shot but come to the same conclusion and put it away. I also find that Faber-Castell sections are often compromised in other ways. The section should given priority after all that’s the user’s primary interface. Tangentially I have an even more difficulty holding the sections of the Diplomat Aero and the Lamy Studio Palladium. Beautiful pens but good looks only get you so far. Your mileage may vary.

A tad too glitzy for me, I have to say.
