Animal Ethics: Why Kicking a Pig Matters (HD Livestream Replay) #animalrights #outreach
In this 4K replay of a live outreach session, I engage in a thought-provoking conversation, asking two individuals if they think it's unethical to kick a pig. Through this discussion, we explore the broader concept of unnecessary violence and its implications, aiming to highlight the importance of adopting a vegan lifestyle. Watch as we delve into ethical considerations and the impact of our choices on animals.
I want to give credit to Justin of @DebugYourBrain for the inspiration for the starting question. Be sure to subscribe to his channel to see some fantastic vegan advocacy.

    The stupid part is that vegans kill far more animals via farming (plow and kill every mole, vole, mouse, etc) and to keep them from eating your crop, than carnivores every did.

    This feels like a pretty shallow examination of the topic: - just like animals kill us with viruses, we'll kill the aliens with our own viruses, cancers, worms etc. - if your argument is that we shouldn't kill animals because they can feel pain, then would you kill/eat humans that don't feel pain(due to genetic/brain condition or even simply sleeping)? - if your argument is that we shouldn't kill animals because they have experience, then would you kill/eat brain dead people/mentally disabled people? - if aliens come, they would probably have the same justification to attack us like we do animals, and we'd have the same justification to defend ourselves like animals - with claws, guns and nukes, so those aliens better be prepared to overtake us in the same way we are with animals - it's the law of the jungle; - maybe those aliens can learn stuff from us, just like we do with animals, so they have an incentive to keep us alive beyond eating.

    40:34 I've never come across a compelling argument against the fact that not Muurdering someone or not preventing some harm that you're not responsible for means that you're a muurderer or that you're responsible for something you're not responsible for....... which is Jeremy's ridiculous argument.

      I think in some cases when we are witnessing harm or someone in need of help, there can be moral obligations or duties, and I also think that in some cases inaction is complicity. In looking at examples and discussing morally obligatory vs. morally virtuous acts, it’s important to distinguish between legal obligations and moral obligations, while recognizing that there is overlap.

    I came in late to the livestream so I rewatched (many times at 30min10secs), in regard to the "running over a puppy" comment, The Vegan Society's definition has in it "all forms of exploitation of, AND CRUELTY TO, animals for food, clothing or ANY OTHER PURPOSE;" so running over the puppy would fall under "cruelty" and "any other purpose" and not be a quality that you would find in a vegan. And while The Vegan Society's definition isn't used by all vegans, it is used a lot, and I would say that it was a very bad example to use and a very bad thought experiment.

    • @indef2def
      @indef2def 2 місяці тому

      Again, moral goodness isn't about adding more words to a word game. It's about the consequences for the experiences of sentient beings. What makes cruelty bad is the harm, not the other way around.

      @indef2def I'm not sure what you mean. I was often confused with your positions during the conversation too. If you're saying there are too many words in TVS's definition, that's fine to say, but I'm saying that based on it, your thought experiment doesn't make sense, whether you say cruelty or harm doesn't matter, the person in your example is being both cruel and harmful.

      @@JonnyVeganSeed I agree that the person in my thought experiment is being greatly harmful, for a trivial reason, which is why their action is very wrong. Great discussion! Around one hour you talk about showing only short impactful clips of animal cruelty. It made me imagine a 4 panels split screen showing, idealy in a "perfect loop", male chicks getting grinded, pigs getting gazed, cows getting milked on the rotating thing and fish getting pulled out of the sea. This could help illustrating the cruelty but also the comodification, automatisation, and absurd scale of (industrial) animal agriculture, and also allow to handle the vegetarian/pescitarian "exuse" more quickly! What do you think about it?

  • @bz938

    How do you feel about hunting? Where I live, there are not enough predators to control the deer population. Hunters fill this gap in the food chain, and a rifle causes less suffering than if the deer were to starve to death or get torn apart by a coyote. The way I see it this form of hunting actually reduces the suffering of animals.

    • @HazVegan
      @HazVegan Місяць тому

      I understand your perspective about hunting reducing suffering. However, from an ethical standpoint, I believe that nonhuman animals have the right to live their lives without human interference. Just as we wouldn’t find it fair to control or assign purposes to other humans, I believe we likewise shouldn’t impose ownership or management upon other animals. Even though suffering is part of nature, it's my view that it’s not our place to decide when or how other animals should live or die. Instead of controlling free-living nonhuman animals, I think our focus should be on creating a respectful and non-dominating relationship with their world.

    See, im with you on the animal welfare, more local farms, support hunting/fishing, and less corporate monopolies approach. But you lose me every time with "just dont eat meat." As if that is the only solution. And as if that doesnt have its own problems.

    • @HazVegan
      @HazVegan 2 місяці тому

      I totally get where you're coming from! Taking a step towards animal welfare and supporting less corporate control over our food supply can be beneficial for animals. 🌍 When I talk about not eating animals, it's because the impact of animal flesh production on the wellbeing and autonomy of nonhuman animals is so significant. We are talking about trillions of animals per year. These nonhuman animals, when they are commodified, are treated as property. They are told by humans' actions that their bodies are not their own. Transitioning to a plant-based diet can, to a great extent, address these serious issues tied to animal commodification. We can choose to adhere to values like compassion and empathy. Plus, with so many delicious plant-based options available now, it’s easier than ever to explore different ways of eating that align more closely with these values. 🌱 As a vegan, I also of course advocate for nonhuman animals to not be exploited for their secretions such as their milk, or for any other purpose (think honey, leather, wool).

    • @Bob-fk8vd
      @Bob-fk8vd 2 місяці тому

      @@HazVegan So justify killing innocent plants? Plants are also alive and you kill them to eat. Next, eating plants uses are more farm land than animals. You also need a lot more chemicals to grow plants in a large quantity and water. Last of all eating animals is far more healthy than plants. Look at people who are carnivores. They are far more muscular and look way healthier and are far more healthy than people who are vegan. Most, not all, vegans look under nourished and are usually very skinny with no muscle tone.
