CSX 1836 RF&P heritage engine leads monster Tampa ethanol train on a busy Monday, with 4 more trains
A busy Monday evening of railfanning locals and road trains in Tampa Florida, on June 17, 2024, between 5 and 10 PM. Trains were shot at many locations quite a few miles apart, railfanning on a bicycle into the night. No fuel was used in the making of this video!
Amtrak Silver Star P092 first backs in to Tampa Union station on time, shoved by an older GE Genesis P42 engine and a new Siemens ALC-42 charger.
A decent-sized daily intermodal i044 next leaves Uceta Yard, pulled by lone engine CSX 153 with a nice-sounding horn.
The highlight of the video is the arrival of giant, fully-loaded Tampa-bound ethanol train B795-13 at Yeoman Yard on the S (old Seaboard) Line from Linden, Indiana, led by heritage engine CSX 1836, with a livery featuring the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac (RF&P) railroad. This engine was released in this livery in February 2024.
Later, Tampa local Y295 is seen crossing 50th St after working one job and spinning Neve Wye, to work more customers near Uceta Yard and Mango.
Finally, a very long empty L778 was caught well after dark coming off the north leg of Neve Wye after working Conrad-Yelvington on the Neve Spur for over 3 hours. L778 was heading for Winston Yard in Lakeland, and had many shiny Vulcan hoppers on the tail end.
Video was shot with a Canon R8 and an RF 24-105mm f4-7.1 lens, with the final night sequence of L778 taken in very dim lighting with the RF 35mm f1.8 lens at ISO 20,000.

That's too bad, railfanning is no fun in the heat. Luckily Tampa was in the low 90s and humidity was fairly low yesterday, otherwise bike riding would have been no fun to make this video!

Im in tampa right now, any tips that allow you to get a day as successful as this one?
2 Amtrak trains come through Tampa every day P091 and P092, they are the most reliable and easiest to catch as you can track them on the Amtrak web page www.amtrak.com/track-your-train.html. If on time they arrive in Tampa around 1 PM and 5 PM, and in the past few months they almost always have a newer Siemens Charger locomotive in second position. Sundays through Fridays there is generally a burst of activity just around the time P092 leaves town, L778 on Neve Wye, L755 from Drew Park, and Y295 through downtown Tampa, plus Y293 going to the port and sometimes ethanol trains going to the port. All those can be caught at N 39th St between E 7th Ave and E Adamo Blvd, where the A line and S lines cross that street. You can listen to the railroad radio on the Scanner Radio app for your phone, 'CSX Railroad Greater Valrico Area' channel but it takes time to learn their lingo and locations. There are still two customers South of Downtown, Quad graphics gets boxcars 2-3 times a week, and occasionally hoppers also go to the port at the end of the line near Picnic Island, so for now it's still running.

This is cool! The night lighting has really leveled up in Tampa
That's true, in some places the city has installed brighter, "white" LED streetlights that make for better images (and ruin astrophotography!). I don't think that's the case in the places I shot this video, however... I intentionally chose places I knew the lighting was better than most, however some of them like the north leg of Neve Wye, 36th St are still pretty dark. The reason the night video looks good is that I use techniques for shooting video (and photos) that I have refined for years as an astrophotographer.... a very fast f1.4 or f1.8 lens and a good camera body, plus very careful and time-consuming post-processing. This video was the maiden run for a new Canon R7, RF-S 18-150 lens, and an amazing RF 24mm f1.8, lens. The R7 records in CLOG3 format --- which as the video shows gives a much better, fuller dynamic range in low lighting, without so much of the highlight area being blown out, while also getting detail in the shadows amongst the noise which will always be there in low light. The latest breed of cameras has very good color correction as well: the video at N 21st St near IKEA is almost totally shot under yellow sodium vapor lighting, and I was able to correct it so it doesn't look as horrible as it often does on older cameras.

I am a former Greyhound driver and this line ran directly in front of our old terminal. It's a busier line than you would think considering it runs directly through downtown.

Seeing a freight locomotive pulling an Amtrak train is rare enough to begin with, but to see a freight locomotive pulling an Amtrak train with a dash 8 as the original motor is like winning the lottery.
That is new to me, CSX helper? I guess P42 are crap. Time for new locomotives for sure
