I have lived in Mainland China and Hong Kong for 20 years. Hong Kongers pretend like they’re so much more civilized than Mainland China. Mainland has its reputation for racism (especially the Cantonese population…coincidence?) but I consider it minimal compared to Hong Kong…Hong Kong…my God, they are the most ignorant, shallow and RACIST people I have EVER MET. I know just from having lived in HK. In contrast, HONG KONG IS WAY MORE racist than China has ever been. I’m not making excuses, so before anyone judges me or tells me about their racist experience in China, let’s point out that racism is EVERYWHERE. But by no means is that an excuse. Hong Kong isn’t just racist towards Mainland Chinese people, but Filipinos, white people and black people as well. Generally though, both sides don’t understand the concept of racism, but that doesn’t mean they’re not ignorant and xenophobic as hell. People always criticize China for the government’s actions and politics and some individuals behavior, but they’re generalizations. Like cutting in line, and these things. Hong Kong is not better by even a mile. Hong Kongers are HORRIBLE to Filipinos. I had a HK gf. She was not a racist. But my mother’s coworkers secretly gossiped about an interracial couple and were opposed to the idea. This made me upset, but my mother didn’t tell me this until years later. The topic was unrelated. I have a thousand other examples I could list about HK’s racism. The bottom line though is, I would choose Mainland China OVER Hong Kong ANY DAY.
