Rapido FP9a Drive hold feature issues

An update to my unboxing and review video of the Rapido N scale FP9a. Here I take a look at the drive hold feature (F3 on this loco) and demonstrate the what the FP9a sounds like. It’s a bit of an oddity to say the least and I’m pretty sure it’s not working properly.

Here's a product that I've been promoting to whoever will listen to me. LOL. I found this product on the Model Railroad Hobbyist website while searching for an alternative way to clean my track. model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/7169 Unfortunately I couldn't find the place I bought it but I can see that it can be found on Ebay.

N Scale Layout

Nice and slow over the curved trestle. Probable one of my favourites spots to railfan on my layout. It's also a good look down "Main Street". Gonna look nice when the structures are built and painted!
One step that was missed, re wheel all rolling stock so they have metal wheels. The crap that the plastic picks up and slowly lays back on the clean rails means you have to repeat the cleaning a few times to get every thing running well.
Appreciate the comment but I have pretty much all plastic wheels and I’m going on 2 years without issues.
I am just getting into the hobby. I have a simple Bachmann steel alloy ez track setup on my carpet. I have been having cleaning issues since like day 3. Needing to clean or spot clean my track like every day I run the layout. I just got this product and applied it after cleaning the track with mineral spirits. Immediately I noticed an improvement in the way my locos run. We will see how it goes in the coming days. The idea of me not having to clean my track for a year or more is crazy. Let’s hope it’s true
Check out Ron’s trains and things for a complete explanation on how to use and why it works. Great video! Thanks for sharing!
I can't say enough good things about this NO OX.
Somewhere on UA-cam is a 19 minute video where the gentleman gets into the science of this NO OX product.
Ron’s trains and things. The initial video discusses non polar products to clean the track and then how to apply the no ox id and then he had a follow up video a year later discussing the immediate results and then the long term results.
My FP9A arrived with very odd programming from the factory. F0 didn't do anything, the numberboards came on with power and couldn't be turned off, the ditch lights didn't work, the class lights didn't work. F1 turned on the sounds, F8 turned on the rear light. Without a Lokprogrammer I would have had to send it back but was able to find the functions assigned to the various lights and remap them and also change the sound functions to more traditional buttons. Also got an Atlas GP40-2W with Loksound and it also had messed up factory settings requiring a fair bit of tinkering with the Lokprogrammer-that device is well worth having. Notice that none of the Rapido sound files are available to download from ESU on their "factory equipped soundfile" section, maybe it's because of their "silly sounds" inclusions!
Amazing video. For the price Rapido charges they need to provide a better experience. I think Jason has great ideas but his execution is middling.
It was pretty annoying to say the least. Still, It's a beauty of a model.
Where did you get your spare wheels to swap out the traction tires? Rapido never seems to have any. Is there another brand I can use?
Hi there. Thanks for watching. The spare wheel came with the locomotive.
lighter fluid and a cmx cleaning car twice a year does it for my dcc layout proof is in my last video
No-ox was made for electricians. It was used on main power cables especially if different metals. It helped maintain conductivity. I use it on my car battery. That was the electricians version. However , I believe it will work on the rails. I was told, put it on wipe it off . Use very little, especially on hills. I bought this brand but haven't been able to use it yet because I'm still doing scenery. I call it level two . Hopefully I'll be done by end of summer.
Hi I have the same for my model railroad . I have had my layout setup for two years now and have not had to do a major cleaning yet all my track was new. I have been adding on the the layout and that makes track dirty once all my construction work completes I plan to use this on all my track. Could you write up the steps and post them That would be very helpful
Thanks for your persistance in convincing them there was a problem. I have 2. 1 I left factory, but the other I changed to a different sound file. They always run in a pair so I turned the factory one down a bit.
hi did you resolve your issue?
Not on my own unfortunatley. I ended up sending it back to Rapido. Once I get it back I will post an update
Is that cp rail engine an intermountain sd40-2? If yes im looking for one with engine number 5771 or 5720..I know it's an odd reply on this video but just curious if you'd have one available for sale? I am for sure going to try this product
Hey Jeff no problem, but the engine in the video is an atlas GP35. I don't have a SD40-2 for sale, sorry.
Am I imagining that the engine has the very Canadian "nose headlight "? If yes did you do it yourself? Could I see it run.?does it also have ditch lights
@@jeffallen5698 Yes I did the nose light myself with a Miniatures by Eric detail part. Unfortunately I haven't worked up the courage to install the light. I have the light, I'm just too chicken.
Very Creative Well,Well done love it.Great Track plan.
Dont use a Bright boy - try this instead. Cork. Use pieces of cork roadbed, the first will be goo gone infused. Then dry to remove. Then alcohol infused. Then dry to remove. Do this and then apply the NO-OX . Do not use a brightboy.
Well too late for me. I used a bright boy then went over again with 1000 grit sandpaper which did the trick very nicely.
I have been using this for over 3 years, I have a large layout 6.5m x 6.0m with 2 levels joined by a 76" helix, this is amazing I haven't had to clean my track in over 1 year, and I run locomotives several times a week, I have also used it on loco pickups sparingly, mostly to just clean them they run much better particularly the steam loco's high, highly recommend this product, it does what all the hype says it does
BEAUTIFUL LAYOUT MY FRIEND .I LIKE YOUR BUILDINGS . ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT LOOKS LIKE CARDBOARD. BRILLIANTLY DONE .I"M ALSO PLANNING OF BUILDING MY OWN LAYOUT BUT NOWADAYS MONEY IS SCARCE AS I"M ONLY RECEIVING A GOVERMENT PENSION AND I"M ALREADY 68 YEARS OLD. BUT MAYBE ONE DAY IT MIGHT COME TO A REALITY. CONTINUE YOUR NICE HOBBY MY FRIEND AS I LIKE TO SEE HOW YOU ARE PROGRESSING
I think ill finally give it a go. Ive had some for a while now, but have been hesitant to use it. Does it cause problems if not all my rolling stock has plastic wheels?
I don't think it matters. I would go out on a limb and say that having metal wheels might be better? But again I don't think it makes a difference when it's applied correctly. As I said in the video, clean it all off after letting it sit for 24 hrs to penetrate the rail. There should be no evidence of it after you're done. Good luck! You won't be disappointed.
Love to see the track plan.
Briteboy, sand paper? No. I would not use anything on my track more abrasive than a cotton sock. Coating? No. Chemistry says that the oxide of nickel silver is more conductive than any coating you could apply. At least one of your viewers alluded to problems with using chemicals if you have traction tires.
Not really sure what you’re trying to say. Yes I used an abrasive to clean my rails before I applied the no-ox. I also used a very very fine sand paper to “polish” it. Bottom line is after applying no-ox to my rails and to my locomotive wheels I have had zero instances of track issues due to dirty track. Even after weeks of no running. Vacuum up any dust and run trains. Snd I’m not the only one experiencing these results.
Can you do a layout tour
I really should. Maybe this weekend.
Jan 2022: It's on Amazon as well these days. Another channel recommended this too. With the Midwest US Winter and a garage layout, I haven't been able to try it yet. Great video! Thanks for all the detailed info!
Excellent !! Thank you. James.
Amazon carries the product
I've been in the hobby seriously for over 60 years (layout in Kalmbach's Great Model Railroads 2009 and 2020.) and have tried everything. This is far and away the best thing I have ever used. It is a miracle product. Just to let you know, I operate with DCC and only use rolling stock with metal wheels.
I would scratch my head why I needed to clean my track almost every other week when I was using Isopropyl Alcohol. Ever since using No-ox my rails are always clean and my trains run smooth as silk. Miracle product indeed! I will be swapping all my wheels to metal on of these days.
@@jdigg2007 Most ISO Propyl contains up to 30% water, therefore this is insanely the same as cleaning tracks with water once the alcohol evaporates. The best ISO stuff still has water residue. 100% alcohol is available and it does not have any no ox grease which reduces traction. If you don't have medium grade inclines - No Ox is probably the best because no ox also improves conductivity, but there is a price to pay on inclines. I have stuck with pure ethanol laced with methanol to stop people drinking it, in a track cleaning car for years, every 6 months just 4 runs around on regular main lines but requires four to eight weeks frequency on occasionally used sidings because I have found regularly rolling wheels on the track also keeps the track free from dust. Pure alcohol does not increase conductivity, however, due to 0% grease there is no slippage from applying a greasy product.
No black on the finger? That’s cool. So does the NO-OX make the black fall off the track? Like where does it go? Between the rails? Would your locos suck it up if the dirt/black fell between the rails? I have the NO-OX, just wanting to research a little more before I apply it. Also, you haven’t had to clean your track in a year? That’s amazing.
No-ox appears to prevent the black from happening. I don't know how the science works, I just know that it does. I'm working on over a year of no serious track cleaning! Only vacuuming now. Gotta do it right otherwise you could have problems. Clean your track really well, clean your loco wheels, you can even clean your rolling stock wheels if you want to start from ground zero (I didn't), apply no-ox sparingly around your layout, then run your Locos and spread it around all your tracks. Let it sit for a day, then wipe the excess off the track and the loco wheels then enjoy problem free running! Keep in mind this stuff won't fix electrical issues.
Over a year? That’s sweet! I’ll have to do it. Not that it’s annoying, but it’s kind of annoying doing it every few weeks! Thanks!
I use inbox wipe a little in one spot every 2 feet then run your trains around it’s been about a year and a half and I have not had any problems yet . Also you will never clean your metal wheels again’ nice and shiny wheels. Try inbox I thank you guys be very very HAPPY . and it work very good on the switches too
From what I’ve seen and heard, the black is caused by micro arcing and no ox prevents the micro arcing.
How does it affect the trains on inclines? Slipping issues?
None. So long was you don't slop it all over the track. You don't need much. After you let it sit and penetrate the rail you then wipe any excess off the rails with a clean cloth.
Nice loco,U25B?
Yes by Atlas. Picked it up on Ebay a while back for a song. NCE decoder in it that I wan't to upgrade to a TCS eventually.
Sanchem is the producer of NO OX ID
Yup. Did I say something else by mistake?
Looks good and sounds good! Just discovered your channel and subbed. Looking forward to more!
I bought two of these new and I’m super disappointed in that them. They have jack rabbit starts, stalls or hesitating on code 55 switches. They will buck back and forth at times also. If I run them at a higher speed without any cars attached to them they smooth out somewhat but if I slow them down, same old thing. This company should stay with the ‘HO’ side and leave the N-scale locomotives alone. Great looking, nice detail and paint and that’s where it ends! 👽
Sorry to hear that. Have you tried contacting Rapido for help. Their customer service is excellent. I for one hope they never abandon N Scale. I have some really cool Canadian stuff because of them.
I bought some after watching another UA-camr who applied it and have success as you did, I haven't had a chance to use it myself yet, but look forward to the results. Thanks for your input on this product 👍
It truly is amazing stuff!
Having similar issues with their HO offerings. The last two have contact issues. Out of about ten units I have had issues with three. As for the number boards, if you have a Lokprogrammer its just a simple matter of changing the Function number from "off" to "on".
It is a conductive anti-oxidation grease. Similar to that used in the electrical field on aluminum wire.
Correct. And perfect for model railroaders!
Who is the 2nd engine made by?
It's an atlas GP9. I added the detail parts. No sound in that one unfortunately.
It is good stuff. I got some after watching the video. It really does work. 👍😎
Wow. The difference is amazing. Now I want to change up my unit with a new speaker. I thought the original always sounded tinny.
I really is something! I'm not that brave though. Just lucked out and bought it this way.
You can buy it on Amazon.
These are garbage. I can't get mine to run on straight, flat track let alone curves or gradients.. Very disappointing, especially after the N-scale LRC lighting debacle. Rapido has really taken its eye off the prize in recent years. Sad!
Garbage? Nah. It was a little annoying yes, but it's hardly junk. Anyhow, it's wasn't that hard to get running well, just some tinkering. Any experienced model railroader should be used to that by now. Never purchased the LRC cars so I can't really say anything about those. Thanks for the comment though.
@@jdigg2007 I'm not even sure where to begin tinkering with these. And no...for the money, I shouldn't have to "tinker.' Never had to tinker with my Prairie Shadow Alco' s. They are bullet-proof. I don't know if this is a chip problem, since they don't run more than a couple of inches even on flat track, or if it's a motor issue, or.....
I’ve said this to many people already. I have had to tinker with just about every locomotive I’ve owned to get them running how I like them. Only one I didn’t have to was my GMD1. I can’t speak for your FP9A, but with mine the main issues were excessive crud on the wheels. The tab thing I mentioned in the video was just a coincidence. Once all the crud was dealt with the performance problems went away. And not to be nit-picky, the Prairie Shadows locomotive was also made by Rapido, it was a partnership with Jeff at PS.
@@jdigg2007 yes, I know, but they are so much better than these. I actually think they need a touch more weight in them. The Alco's are quite a bit heavier than these. Perhaps that might solve the problem. Hard to pinpoint exactly what's going on with mine.
Quality control on these things was no-existent!
I love rapido (from the videos and what other modelers say) I am just getting back into the hobby after 30 years and am starting my collection (Bench work starts in the spring) I wanted to get the Canadian and two FP9As (would love a B unit in the center) But I don't have your technical wizzardry and would be very frustrated to make the investment and not have decent runners right out of the box. You did a great and thorough review. Much appreciated.
Technical wizardry! Ha thanksI really can't take that much credit. It wasn't really that complicated. Just removing the truck side frames and cleaning it all up.
Subscribing late in the game I am nonetheless impressed with the progress. Tell me: Where did you get the trestles? Homemade?
Hello and thanks! The trestle I purchased as a kit but it came as a bag of sticks and a template so it's also sort of handmade! Unfortunately the owner of the company I bought it from, black bear construction company, passed away and the company went out of business.
Excellent unboxing video, the quality of the video is great. The quality of the engine, well? The unit looks great unfortunately I can't believe anyone would be happy with any engine that doesn't work right out of the box. 90% of buyers are going to return this if it doesn't work without taking it apart.
Hey thanks for the feedback! Regarding the loco not working smoothly out of the box. I agree it would have been less annoying for me if it ran perfectly from the moment I placed it on the rails, but it didn't. While it was frustrating, I was "fine" with it as I'm very comfortable with taking my locomotives apart to clean and tweak them. And let's be honest here, if you're in this hobby you should be really comfortable with taking your trains apart. I have taken all my locomotives apart for one reason or another, new, used, whatever. Except for my 2014 GMD1, I've taken them all apart. So I did with this one as well, and I resolved the issue on my own, but that's me. Besides, I knew I didn't want the traction tire so I was taking it apart anyway. Long story short, the issue really seems to have been the blackened wheels, because my unit has had no issues since. I've examined the brass tabs since and there is no way that was this issue. It was just a coincidence that it ran better after pressing on them.
@@jdigg2007 Thanks for the update I'm sure if Southern Pacific had these on the roster I would already own a couple, and be happy with that. Still may purchase as a one off Canadian unit. Yes eventually shells must come off for various maintenance items. Guess my point is to not accept a product that doesn't work from day one, believe me I know as I know I have a Broadway Limited steam unit that is to late to return and will probably be figuring it out for myself.
@@foxs683ss Don't get me wrong, if I couldn't get it going I would have returned it. Like I say in the Video Rapido's service is top notch.
For what these cost I'd expect them to be perfect. Rapido seems to consistently have their wheels gauged too narrow, I had that problem on my GMD-1s that I bought. I build my own track, to NMRA specifications and the GMDs would short on the turnouts because of being too narrow. I also like Broadway LImited Products but they are even worse for having to "tune up" the electrical to get good, consistent pickup. One of the products I've been using when these kinds of electrical pickup issues are present is a conductive oil. I believe Atlas makes "Conducta lube" or something like that. I find the grease is just too thick whereas the oil works MUCH better.
I hear what people are saying that with the cost of the models they should be flawless. I get that. That being said, Every model train I own has had to be opened up and tinkered with to get them to run better. The only one I've not had to open up yet (strangely enough) is my first run GMD1.
@@jdigg2007 Every Kato and new Bachmann and ScaleTrains that I have purchased needed no tinkering. They ran perfectly out of the box.
@@stpaulisland Wonderful.
My FP9A cuts out dead just after it gets moving. Not happy. I've never paid so much for a loco before. You shouldn't have to open it up to get it working.
I am having the same problem. I bought two of them, 1 runs fine but the other one will run for about 1 or two inches and then short circuits my layout. I haven't been brave enough to open it up yet, would like some instructions from Rapido before I do. I love the detail and sound though but what's the use if it doesn't run.
All I can say is make sure the wheels are clean and check that there's no oil or grease fouling up the axle with the contact strip. And as with every model manufacture loco out there, give it some run time.
Just an update: Gauging the wheels (mine were out quite a bit) fixed the shorting issue. Also swapping the traction tire axle with the other one for the most part fixed the stalling issue. You are right by just running it will improve over time. BTW great video.
Mine only likes to run about full speed and just stops sometimes even on straight track. Shorts out sometimes on switches. Track and switches all Kato. Replaced traction tire axle with the one in parts bag. Nice looking loco but is a pile of junk.
Well, I tinkered with mine and got it running beautifully. Short of doing that you could contact Rapido customer service and get some help.
I don’t get how they make a truly nice model and then they dial up the way back machine to 1975 and use traction tire wheels. If you’re having trouble pulling a consist do like the big boys do and add another engine.
Ya that was a bit of a head scratcher for me. At least they provide another wheel set to swap it out!
@@jdigg2007 if you haven’t bought one or two prairie shadows have the N FPA4 and you can never have enough MLW/Alco power.
@@hughm5996 I've been eyeing up a b-unit to run with this one. We'll see.
Really like the wooden trestle, excellent scenery work!
I too have heard great things about it and have some, but I have yet to try it. I'm starting to paint the track and want to get the ballast on before I use the No-Ox. Bright Boys are really abrasive and can cause problems in the long run. I use dish sponges, the yellow sponge with the green scouring on one side. Cheap from the dollar store, cut into N scale wide strips to do both rails but fit through tunnel entrances and bridges. I use them with rubbing alcohol and use the green pad for anything I feel the sponge side catch on.
Definitely wait until after painting and ballasting as you'll be dealing with paint and glue on the track and cleaning over and over. I didn't do it until all that was done on my layout. I agree with the bright boy track eraser, it scratches up the rail pretty good that's why I went over again with a very fine grit sandpaper to make sure everything shines. Once the No ox is applied and allowed to penetrate the rail, no more cleaning with Alcohol.
Great review! 👍
Thanks!
Were you able to adjust the brightness of the number boards? If so, how did you do that? The ones on my unit are way too bright as are the class lights. And, were you able to find out how to shut off that HISS when the unit is shut down? Mine came without the ditch lights installed. I contacted Rapido and they're sending an installation kit along with some instructions. Sounds like it's going to be fairly difficult.
Sorry, I haven't no. I wasn't planning on it though. Have you downloaded the decoder manual from Rapido's site? you will need to figure out which AUX# is the number boards and edit the applicable CV for brightness. Pages 79 through to 83 in the manual.
@@jdigg2007 No I haven't. I'll will do that. This is my first LokSound unit and I'm kinda afraid that fiddling with the decoder CV's without using a Lok Programmer could be trouble.
I get that, if you need any help let me know. Two heads are better than one!
@@jdigg2007 thanks for the review , you did a great job . I have a C40-8m and had to returned it 2 times, there was no motor sound .... I also have The Canadian in Pacman colors , it's beautifull and also finicky , had the same problem with the pick up , at first the lights were flashing a lot because of oily wheels , it's now ok . Had to change all the couplers to get longer shanks , the cars are so close coupling there was a lot of derailments mainly in S curves where all my other rolling stock never had problem. I gave more than 250 passengers cars , 160 locomotives and 850 freight cars , not to brag but to tell you I am not an under the Christmas tree modelers !!! They make great looking products but when you buy RAPIDO , get ready to work on these models .... switch is sad . I tried without success to lower the overall sound on my C40-8m and while doing so I lost the front headlight .... Had to reset to factory default ! Their models are incredible
@@louisletourneau3429 Thanks! That's a lot of trains dude. I have a few but my layout is small so I still fill it up. Going to expand one of these days when I find the time. My engine is still running great (crossed fingers) so I am pretty sure it was the wheels. There was a lot of gunk on them. I do agree that RAPIDO models are a bit finicky but the detail on them is so incredible and being Canadian I fell a duty to support them. For example, I bought their Canadian mid train dome but can't run it as I have a couple of tighter curves on the layout that it can't handle. For now I run Kato's Via passenger set with this Loco. One day I'll join a club and run an epically Canadian passenger train!
Nice video, thanks
