Victory - Rise of Alexander Track 13
From the full-length lyric video (link below) for Rise of Alexander, a 2011 concept album based on the life of Alexander the Great. Track 13 sees Alexander's conquest of Persia reach fruition.
There actually was an eclipse twelve days before the Battle of Gaugamela. The ancient Babylonians had considered eclipses to be evil omens directed at their kings, and hundreds of years before Alexander's time they had developed the astronomical technique to predict these solar events. The Persian dynasty to which Darius belonged inherited this knowledge from the Babylonians, but they were a far less superstitious bunch. I'm not aware of any evidence that Alexander tried to use the "omen" to inspire his troops and demoralize the Persians, but it certainly wouldn't have been out of character. I just thought it would be ironic if he did, and the Persians bascially said "chill dude, it's just an eclipse".
The theory that Hephaestion turned one of the Persian generals is only supported by circumstantial evidence, but... Mazaeus was in command of the Persian right wing that was unexpectedly and disastrously routed once the battle commenced, and he was later appointed by Alexander as governor of Babylon, a prestigious position. So like the eclipse thing, it's speculative, but consistent with how Alexander rolled and well within Hephaestion's known skill set.
One footnote that didn't make it into the song is that during the battle, the Persian cavalry tried to rescue Darius' mother Sisygambis. She and the rest of Darius' family (who were captured in Track 11) were still part of Alexander's entourage, but she refused to go with her would-be rescuers. It's unclear whether she she and the rest of the royal family actually preferred Alexander's hospitality to home life with Darius, or if she simply saw the writing on the wall as to the eventual outcome of the war. Either way, Alexander grew close to Sisygambis, and eventually married one of Darius' daughters. But that, my friends, is a tale for "Fall of Alexander," which I am really, seriously going to finish someday.

After the grueling campaign down the Mediterranean coast, in Track 11 Alexander's army moves west into Egypt. From the full-length lyric video (link below) for Rise of Alexander, a 2011 concept album based on the life of Alexander the Great. In Track 11, the campaign down the Mediterranean coast takes a toll on both Alexander's army and his principles. The lyrical description of the siege of Tyre is mostly accurate, except that Alexander's frustration with the unexpectedly stubborn defenders on the Med...

In Track 10, Alexander and Darius finally face off for the first time. Video of the aurora borealis shot May 10 2024 from Waxler Road on Knobley Mountain in West Virginia, USA. Most still photos of the event look more vivid because they're shot in "low light" mode, so they don't give you a sense of what it really looks like to the naked eye, but the video doesn't lie. It was impressive even at this low latitude.

    The first house my wife and I owned was in Carpendale, which was right down the street from your Granddads house. I remember walking our son up to see his display. I liked the town, but I reenlisted in the Marines, and so we sold our house, but when we went back to Cumberland, we would go back to the old house.

    UPDATE: In November 2019 the CDC released a study showing EVERY SINGLE lung sample they tested from people with vaping related illnesses contained Vitamin E Acetate, a chemical which is known to interfere with normal lung function and is NOT used in commercial e-liquid, but IS used in counterfeit e-liquid, particularly when used to deliver THC. If I'd waited a couple months to publish this video, this fact would have made the conclusion even stronger (the problem isn't technically toxic contamination in counterfeit e-liquid, but the intentional addition of a potentially harmful ingredient in counterfeit e-liquid).

  • @surtrgaming1730
    @surtrgaming1730 4 роки тому

    That was interesting. I never heard this point of view. Pretty much every single time that I have heard people argue that there is a god, there were pretty much also trying to argue that not only there was a god, but it was also the specific god in their religion. While you leaved that door open that, well we can't really know if the god that exists is really the specific god of the Christian religion or any specific god at all.

      Yes, the ultimate cautionary tale about how dangerous complacency can be. Too many people, even educated people, just cross their fingers and hope "it can't happen here" because staying informed and taking action requires time and effort, but letting one party or one person have too much power for too long is almost always a recipe for disaster.

    What would be the source of the moral living? Isn't the state a reflection of the heart of the individual? Does history have any examples of non-archy? Not organizations like the Red Cross, but communities of people in daily life, pulling this off?

    • @jeffbuser6122
      @jeffbuser6122 5 років тому

      Individual morality can come from spirituality, logically derived ethics, or a bit of both. The morality of a democracy is the median morality of its voters, but in a dictatorship all bets are off. I don't think there are any real-world examples of nonarchy, because people aren't enlightened enough to pull it off. Some indigenous peoples apparently had relatively peaceful societies with minimalist authority structures, but I can't think of any other examples.
