I remember as a kid at 6 o'clock every evening he would come on our radio station and tell "the rest of the story." I miss hearing him. Grandpa would never miss him and that's usually where I was being they lived 1/2 mile from my parents house in the country. That's where I'd be at exactly 6 o'clock to hear Paul Harvey with grandpa. I miss them both

The word "rifleman" did not exist in 1777. Rifles did not exist either. Rifles (first invented a tad over 100 years later) had swirling "rifled" barrels that when fired, caused the projectile to spin. These projectiles had a brass cartridge casing and the projectiles became known as "bullets". That spinning action made bullet's trajectory to be far more straight and "true". In 1777 there were NO "sharpshooters". Long arms were "muskets" which had smooth bore barrels and fired lead balls which were not perfectly spherical and "tumbled" in "flight". Musket fire was very inaccurate even at moderate distance. Hitting a target involved a high % of pure luck. I LOVED Harvey's broadcasts as a kid and still do but this one is WAY off the mark!!! (Sorry for the bad pun!)

That was truly one I had never heard before. Thank you for sharing this. Can you imagine the devastation and heartache of those families when they were notified that their son, or sons, had died in a training excersize. I wonder if they were even told that the Germans had attacked and killed their children? Probably not. That's sad. It might even be worse, what if those families were never told? I hate cover-ups!!

Only Mr. Harvey could tell a story like he does. This left me biting my nails as I listened in horror!!!! But……the rest of the story. This is why I am a big Paul Harvey fan!!!!!!! 72 years old and I grew up listening to him. Loved all of the stories.
