My Backpacking Photo and Video Kit, Sony and Fujifilm (2024)
#fujifilmx100vi #sonya7iv #backpacking
Amanda's channel: @amanda.outside
This is everything I use to create photos and videos while hiking and camping in the backcountry. This kit has evolved over the years into what it is now. Not the most lightweight kit but it's a good balance for me of weight and capability. It's a great kit for video content creation on UA-cam while still allowing me to easily take travel photos and portraits in a way that I love.

    You look like you know what you're doing but as a longtime Fuji user who also just loves the jpegs my best advice would be to shoot raw only. Double tap the Q button on any keepers to flip them into jpegs or if it's a particularly good shot try a few different recipes on the same image. Now the only jpegs on your card are the keepers which makes it super easy to zing them all to your phone (select all then zing).

    great video. I can agree to everything. This camera makes me also fall in love with photography again 🙂 One question: you assigned a button for marking a photo to transfer it the the phone. I could not believe the lack of subs you had. Your stuff is really really nice man. Actually practical on hands long usage stuff. Too many of the big guys are jumping systems every 2 months and their “reviews” are done after a day using the gear at a press event. Maybe I’m exaggerating but your kit seems actually well thought out.

Something marvellous just happened: FUN, JOY of shooting was back!!! The images have lots of detail, even against the sun. I love your honest and the Meat & Potatoes approach on your video. I also love the jpegs Fujifilm puts out. It sounds counter-intuitive but it is the reason I shoot raw only. I just double tap the Q button to flip any keepers into jpegs or if it's a particularly good shot (or I messed something up) I'll go to town on it editing it in -camera. I also do multiple edits of shots I like (bw, different wb etc). Now the only jpegs on the card are keepers which make pinging them all to my phone super simple (select all then ping). Cropping, levelling and very minor tweaks I do in Snapseed. I've never been a fan of hyper-edited pictures and once I just accepted that I can't really edit a picture better than Fuji makes a jpeg life became a lot easier.

    Great, I will add two great features of the Fuji X100VI that you don't mention are *huge* for the kind of photos you showed in the video: That camera has a buit in 4 stops ND fiter and a leaf shutter, so the flash sync speed of it is 1/4000th of a second. You can make amazing things with that configuration.

    • @nickroush
      @nickroush 5 днів тому

      Yes! I love both of those features. You run into a little issue trying to shoot 1/4000 at f2, the shutter can’t keep up and you get some funky bokeh. But then you flip on the ND and you can shoot f2 in full sun!

    I've shot with and owned the X100S, X100T and X100F. Everything you've described about the experience of owning one of these cameras has been mine experience as well. I regretted selling the X100F, but it was to fund another hobby. Since then I've added a Niikon Z fc with 24 prime to get that feeling again. It's not 100% the same, but for half the price of the current market value of the X100V/VI cameras, it's all I want.

    Hello I want to get rid of my X-T4 and get X100VI to kind of escape the hassle of getting different lenses, how limiting is 23 on X100VI is for portraits? I get a feeling that backgrounds are either busy or are not as smooth as they are on your first few pics even with off camera flash, is there a workaround for that or is that just lens limitation?

    • @nickroush
      @nickroush 13 днів тому

      You're right, at 23mm you're not going to get the super smooth blurry background. The non Fuji images in this video were shot on a full frame camera with a 50mm f1.2 lens. The photo of my redhead friend in the middle of the video was on the x100VI with the TCL attachment. That gives you a tighter angle and shallow depth of field that gets you closer to that "portrait look".

      @nickroush 18 днів тому

      I've always shot my cameras in manual or aperture priority, but one of the friends that talked me into this camera said he shoots full auto and just adjusts the exposure comp. dial. I started shooting this camera on manual then slowly just gave the camera more and more control and still ended up happy with the images. Even in tough lighting scenes it seems to make some going choices. Give it a try on your V! P.S. When I'm using strobes I go back to full manual control.

    I like your work displayed here. My walk-around portrait kit is even smaller than yours. I also use the X100VI with a no longer available Fuji EF-X20 tiny flash for my walk-around outdoor portraits. Since the X100 has a leaf shutter, combining this with the little flash and my DIY modifier, I can shoot balanced light outdoor portraits so well. My curved hard modifier also prevents me from worrying about wind or the use of an assistant(s). It all fits in a fanny pack and when I pull it out and put the kit on a selfie stick as my 'light stand' people laugh. Until they see the shot. It's SO MUCH FUN and since my day job is as a publicity shooter, I'm so sick of lugging gear around it's great. I still do outdoor on-location publicity work, with assistants, strobes, sandbags, modifiers, etc. I prefer on-location shooting to in-studio. I equate on-location to camping and in-studio to staying in a hotel. Everything in the studio is under my control, but man the results of being on location are so worth the hassle and results. Keep shooting and thanks for your video.

      That sounds great! I'd love to see that selfie stick setup! I love being able to shed all the gear I use for commercial work and have fun with this little camera. I feel the same about on-location shooting, much prefer it to studio work. I do love the studio for testing out new gear or experimenting with light.

      Sure, especially if you have some tips, like crop mods, or generally advices

      I dig the style of the video. I think you might have hit a niche on using the camera in full auto mode. While most hardcore Fuji users won’t care about this, there are a ton of people that bought the x100v/vi and are doing just that. So more about recipes and in full auto would be best. What screws up my images most of the time is that a lot of pics with friends always come out with too dark/orange skin tone. So maybe recipes around taking good pics of people is something I haven’t seen yet.

      @@DrthH8r I have a recipe video and a settings video planned out that will hopefully help with that!

    Congratulation Nick! I've waited for this Camera every day for 6 months. And I'm still waiting. So I have to shoot with my beloved X100F.
