Thank you for being normal fans and having normal criticisms, unlike the miserable weirdos out there
19:10 girl same, he opened his mouth and it was all downhill (uphill? 😂) from there
Too bad DA4 ruined the story
Post-Veilguard: I love Elgar'nan so so much. Can't wait to do a video dedicated to him. He's my inner rage demon.
I also want to add…Solas at the end without source to protect his immortality is a ticking time bomb. Writers wrote themselves into a corner with that one. The other gods died without their dragons. Tell me then, how Solas without a dragon or alternative power source, is going to hold up the veil indefinitely?
So, the dragons didn't actually have much to do with ancient elven immortality - they were innately immortal "it was simply a part of being elven". I might do a video on it in future, but the way it was written either outright states or heavily implies that while the elven 'gods' were immortal (they didn't age/grow old), they could still be killed - hence the dragons. They created bonds with dragons, similarly to Corypheus (who started out mortal, and achieved immortality in this way), which allowed them a powerful source that made their elven forms unkillable. Like I said, I'll maybe make a video because that's a bit of lore. tldr: Solas is immortal in the sense that he won't age/grow old. So his lifeforce could hold up the Veil indefinitely, unless he's killed somehow.
It's a shame they didn't take into accounts what happened in previous games. As it is it feels very railroaded into a reset for the whole universe and no matter what you do, the veil stays and the universe stays the same. I would have liked to see past actions affecting the current game which could lead to different endings and other small things that make the game feels more special and unique thus much more replayable. For example, if you drank from the well instead of Morrigan you could get a fragment of her powers which led to access to a unique skill tree at the cost of Mythal forcing your inquisitor to do something for her, or if the Hero of Ferelden and/or Alistair was ruling Ferelden, Denerim wouldn't fall and if Gaspard ruled Orlais it would withstand the darkspawn forces better than if Celene ruled, etc.
I was shocked that the Black Divine was like mentioned once.
Mourn Watch has a LOT of lore when you play as one. My character was always making quips about various aspects of culture within the Watch, as well as commenting on differing practices and in general unsettling NPC's along the way as he casually spoke about corpses and necromancy. Plus Mourn Watch characters will have the ability to call Manfred adorable.
Yes this! Incredibly satisfying amount of reactivity as a MWer
37:20 whoever you lose in that mission the light over their door stays permanently lit. As if they want to talk to you. Make of that what you will, but I choose to believe they survived to some extent.
I'm sorry if this bursts a bit of hope, but if I recall correctly, the light is on because you can go into their quarters and interact with an item to "remember" them. Rook will say something about what they wish they could say, or what they will miss, or a hope for a future reunion. Once I had done that and left their quarters again, the light went out. :(
10:50 I saved Treviso and I could still get all the Candlehops. And I didn't do all the quests in Minrathous before the choice.
I saved Minrathous because I hate the crows in particular Catherina(just read the books). Also the crows are a bunch of baby groomers and murderers🤷🏼
@@TheDream6842they were sanitized. I’d much prefer if they actually showed this. Instead we got scooby doo assassins.
@@maiafay lmao, agreed. They also hided Tevinter's slavery🤦🏼
@@TheDream6842 We were never in any areas where slavery was actually happening. Besides, I don’t really see why something like that should be shoehorned into a game when we have bigger things to deal with.
@@ThatFont It's core of the dragon age DNA. But they lighted this game for the new audience. Even the crows act like flawless vigilantes and Catherina who is a child ab*s3r was turned into a strict grandma. I like the game but when you look at what it should have become.....(Just search for project Joplin, you will be baffled)
i like the game a lot on my 2nd run. that being said i think its a horrible dragon age game, when you read whats going on in the south from the inquisitor that sounds like the game we should be playing. Seems way worse in the south but we are dealing with 2 gods and the blight and their situation sounds a lot more dire, feels a lot more like a god of war game then a dragon age game
I think the lore is more generalized because the developers had to make a game that would make sense to DA newcomers. I think we’d have an entirely different game had the fourth installment come out a few years after Inquisition. *sigh* we can thank EA and their meddling
I think the faction backgrounds should have been more restrictive (some not all) - veil jumpers should have been a Dalish elf origin only - there was such a muddled effect on roleplay because sometimes my character would know dalish history and sometime none at all, it was super inconsistent. just like shadow dragons having a qunari members ??? In minrathous???? just takes you right out of the immersion.
The game is decent and I personally liked it slightly more than DAI. The combat and open world was kind of tiring. And Corypheus didn't even feel that big of a threat if I'm being honest. In this game I felt I little bit more threatened with the gods. If only the writing was better then it would have been a good if not even awesome game. Because the combat was great and the characters were alright. The quests were in the worst case meh and in the best case great. My personal problems with the writing: - repetitive dialogues, we get it dwarves don't dream etc. We heard it the first time. - Elven rook is kinda weird because at some point they mention they are dalish and in the next they grew up in a city..? I feel like they tried to make something neutral here and then made it confusing - Slavery was kinda ignored in Tevinter. I get it we are among the lower class so to say. Mostly "free" people prob live there. And writing anything with Slavery or discrimination can be difficult i get it. But ignoring it almost entirely is..weird. Especially bc it was established as this big thing in this world. - They should have added dalish clans who explicitly still believed in the gods. Would have been interesting to see their reaction to it and would have made it more heartbreaking in my opinion. - while the game has dark elements and is for sure not a "Disney game" as some would like to call it, they kind of...stayed away from going too dark if it makes sense..? And there is so much more. Like why should I decide on Bellaras personal quest whether she keeps the archive or not. Especially if you play as a human it's.. weird. The same goes with Taash. Why decide between the Qun and Rivain. People who grew up with multiple cultures don't usually just choose one. They end up with both.. etc etc etc The writing isn't horrible. It just has a bunch of flaws and unfortunate weak points. I was staring at my screen with my mouth wide open at Taashs personal quest where we have to rescue their mother. I thought it was nice to have an older character like Emmrich talk about his fear of death and his arc being about overcoming it one way or another. Like they clearly can write well.. but for some reasons at times they didn't. And this brought the game down.
I dreaded meeting Bellara and Emmrich after that very goofy reveal trailer. But they probably both ended up being my favourite characters in the game, so I enjoyed being surprised on that count. As for the writing? I think Bellara had the best character scene in the game; her monologue early on where she opens up about her brother. The writing, the scene direction, the music - it was fully sincere for a change, and wonderfully acted. It actually moved me to tears. That really gave me a boost of hope that the writing would kick into gear as the game progressed. But that didn't really happen, unfortunately. I enjoyed it, and whilst I'd prefer CRPG combat back, if you're going to do action design, do it well - and Veilguard did. I think the end was good. I talked Solas down, but even that was a bit weird. Rook is just a complete non-entity, and despite a full playthrough I didn't really feel they deserved to be sharing the stage with the Inquisitor and Morrigan. My biggest issue with the whole game was that it didn't feel like it was especially interested in the lore of Thedas... Tevinter didn't seem anything like how Dorian described. None of the elves seemed particularly bothered by their own gods turning out to be lunatics. The Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, and the, er, Treasure lot all felt like MMO player factions, not groups that rose out of the societies and cultures of Thedas. The Wardens now just seem to be thoroughly bland Heroes™ (though I feel the Wardens have been poorly handled from II onwards). How often did people discuss the Chantry? The entire series began with a religious quote about the origins of the Blight. We find out the true origins, yet not a single character mentions the Chant therefore being wrong? Sera wasn't the brightest spark in DA:I... but even she grapples with the social, and personal, ramifications of whether Cory actually entered the Golden City. DAV just didn't seem to know about DA's religions and the role they've played in the series - or didn't care. We're in Tevinter, and their own Old Gods are tearing into the city by the end. And it's never mentioned. It's just bizarre. It's like it's trying to be a soft reboot on one hand - welcoming newcomers who don't want to deal with a trilogy's worth of worldbuilding - but is still a direct follow-up from the prior game's *DLC*... I certainly enjoyed it far more than I expected, but it's an incredibly flawed DA, and I don't really want these writers in charge of any other BioWare game. Or at least the next DA.
The only ones I see that feel that the game is good but not great are those who spent 10 years on youtube tying to tell folks the SO CALL TRUE STORY you the one THE AUTHORS DONT KNOW ABOUT and now that all there theory's are wrong are trying to blame the game. and the writers and the story owners for not knowing the story
What the game lacks most: good writing. Every professional writer who has made a video about this game so far, is criticizing the bad and childish writing. It feels like Bioware hired high school fanfic authors to write the story and especially dialogues. Its an insult to any adult person with standards.
Every writer on this game is a dragon age veteran who wrote beloved stuff before. Hell, the lead writer is the person who wrote Tresspasser.
@@ChrissieBear So ur saying they did this on purpose? That this type of horrible, immature, crappy writing was intended to be this crappy from the start? Thats even worse.
@@Oozaru85 Almost all of the writers are people who have written very well-regarded characters and plotlines from past games (both Dragon Age and Mass Effect) who have been previously lauded for their writing. We don't know what went on behind the scenes to make this game feel so dumbed-down and sanitized - I personally suspect some higher-up front office types were meddling with the game direction - but the writers who worked on it didn't all suddenly develop amnesia and lose their talent overnight. It's too coincidental for this to be a wholesale problem throughout the game to blame the writers for lacking talent.
@ems7448 So ur telling me higher ups forced them to make the writing cringy and crappy? That makes no sense. You dont hire and pay professional writers to have them write Disney Channel level of dialogues for their mature dark fantasy RPG. If true tho, thats an indirect insult to any adult gamers intelligence. And for me even more reason, to never buy any of their products ever again.
@@ChrissieBearit’s first draft though. It’s not polished in any way. Repeated phrases, constantly reminding the player what they literally just did. This was Weekes taking lead as writer. In previous installments, he/they was not lead. There is a huge plot hole at the end. Solas has no way of insuring his immortality and he is literally the only thing keeping the veil intact. That’s a problem. They wrote themselves into a corner.
I wouldve liked to learn more about the elven gods. In the end I didnt learned much more about them than before to be honest... And now looks like this arc is gone so we wont learn more about them... Elgarnan we just see him in the third act.
I'll be covering all the new info about the gods in some videos - I'm doing a second playthrough to pick up anything I missed so I have my facts straight (plus the artbook gives some nice info about elgar and ghil). But yeah, I feel the same about not getting as much new info as I wanted - we 100% need a novel or some short stories about elvhenan, ancient elves, the gods, etc.
@@ladysulevin I just finished DAV this evening. Haven't listened to this video, yet. But doesn't DA have a fairly spotty history with its Big Bads? It'd be nice to have more dimensionality to the 'gods', but I feel it's mostly consistent with the series. Loghain is largely just a sneering antagonist - unless you recruit him at the Landsmeet. *Then* he's layered. I feel DAII fares best by far, because it's the smallest scale story (DA's best mode, I reckon), and Meredith is just at the apex of the real 'villains' of II; historic baggage and sociocultural and religious dysfunction... She ends up being manipulated, yes, but it just pushed her over the edge. The reasons for her mania are well grounded in the game's handling of Kirkwall's, and Thedas's, tensions (ditto Orsino, with the usual caveats/disclaimers re production difficulties). In DA:I Corypheus has none of his mystique from II, and mostly just pantomimes villainy whilst getting his ass kicked repeatedly... He sounds imposing, but we don't learn much about him, or his full version of what he saw in the Golden City. I think Elga'nahn and Gilh'anan (I still can't spell their names after 100hrs... ) are the worst antagonists the series has had, but I don't think the series has done very well with its villains or antagonists, so it feels about par for the course. It's a missed opportunity, yes, but then my biggest criticism of DAV was it barely seemed truly interested in the lore of Thedas, and its social and political tensions/paradigms. So of course it's not going to properly explore the Evanuris or ancient elvhen history/culture. I mostly very much enjoyed it. After the reveal trailer, I was dreading meeting Bellara and, especially, Emmrich. But I like how the game surprised me, and Bellara and Emmrich probably ended up being my favourite characters in the party. Anyhoo, now I can start on the spoiler videos and wotnot, starting with this one...
@@SabiJD Good comment! I just have one thing I wanted to add about Loghain. I found him to be pretty compelling even pre-recruitment. Because he doesn't get a lot of screen-time before the final act of the game, it's mostly just from what you hear about him from characters who knew him or codex entries.
@@RustCohle072 Oh, I agree with that, but for me that's not enough. I'm going on the scenes we do see of the antagonists. Judged on post-Landsmeet, plus all we learn of him from those sources you mention, he's probably my favourite antagonist in the series. But I still think he's a quite poor antagonist, because we should see more of his nuance directly. Most players don't read codex entries. In II, Hawke directly crosses paths with Meredith several times over the years. You can build a rapport with her. You understand where she's coming from, and she tries - fairly reasonably at first - to appeal to you, with examples. In the text of the game, i.e. the literal events of the story, she is even proven right, albeit with caveats; when pressed, the mages do resort to blood magic. I mean, they did because she kept squeezing, and because EA or BioWare hierarchy wanted a second boss battle... But still, the story proves she's partly justified. Even without the frustrating red lyrium influence, she has great dimensionality, as we directly interact with her multiple times. Origins and Inquisition can't really have the protagonist chit-chatting with the antagonists, sure... But that's still the fault of the writers/narrative directors. The glimpses we see of Loghain could/should be better, and Cory just needed better writing, I feel (he also needed one or two major Ws to go with his string of Ls to help him feel like a proper threat, but that's a different problem). I guess my, er, ranking of antagonists would be; Meredith, Loghain, Corypheus and then DAV's cartoon villains lagging very far behind.
If you beat Solas with force, he calls himself a god. If you beat him with trickery, he calls himself a fool. Redeeming Solas is its own kettle of fish outside the purview of this comment.
I think the worldbuilding is probably the weakest part of Veilguard. The direct lore tied to Solas and the gods is good, in my opinion, and I enjoyed the main plot as well as the character writing quite a bit. Some of the aspects of the setting that make it more complex and rich, like you guys mentioned: politics, religion, some of the darker parts of society like slaves are all glossed over or absent. I imagine that this is probably what suffered most from the game's development being so fraught with problems. They had to pivot from single player to multiplayer back to single player, and some of the richness and attention to detail wasn't able to be fleshed out enough. That's just a guess and not an excuse, just trying to be compassionate to the team who very obviously did their best. I wish there were more of those elements, but if something needed to be cut it makes sense to me that it was that as well as more branching dialogues and choices. The more of those you have, the more you have to code, animate, etc. So at the end of the day, we got a more linear experience where Rook was more of a character that you were flavoring (similar I'd say to Geralt in the Witcher series or Aloy in the Horizon series or even Hawke in DA2) than a blank slate type character like the Warden or the Inquisitor. It isn't "bad" just different, in my opinion. I can understand why people would have wanted more choices, but that doesn't mean that what we did get is bad. I do agree with Cole that I did not understand why Rook's presence in either Minrathos or Treviso was the thing that made the difference between a city being saved or destroyed. I can understand how Minrathos was rocked even though they have a mage army (no preparation/caught off guard, sabotaged by the Venatori), but we weren't given enough explanation of why Rook made the difference. It would have been nice if Rook *did* something that only they could do, either with the dagger or because of their own ingenuity that made a clear and decisive difference there. Unfortunately it smacked too much of "it happened this way because it needed to happen this way because we needed there to be a consequence for this decision."
With regard to what you all were saying about the dragons and why Rook matters. He doesn't. You guys mentioned the dagger, but at this point in the story, you don't even know the significance of the dagger. You just know that the gods want it. Solas only tells you about the connection between the gods and theirdragons when you talk to him about the impending battle at Weishaupt. I agree with Cole. There is literally no reason why having Rook who has no conceivable skill except being exceptionally stubborn should be able to affect the outcome of any battle. The fact that Minrathous falls despite the fact that they do have a city full of Mages and the Shadow Dragons is bad writing. You are faced with a choice, save a city that is both fortified and well defended or save a city with no army at all. Duh. The choice is obvious, you save Treviso. During the quest, you aren't even allowed to help fight. They say, that is not going to help let's just focus on the dragon. Ok? Then why am I here? Just by standing in front of the dragon and waving around the dagger you know the gods want, you end up saving an entire city that apparently doesn't get sacked by forces even though you're not there to help defend the city. You're somewhere else being bait for a dragon. It doesn't make any sense. Distracting a dragon does nothing to prevent an army from destroying a city. Again bad writing done only to give you an illusion of choice, but what difference does it make? Having Lucanis or Neve hardened has NO effect on the game whatsoever. So who cares? It's a meaningless choice.
Actually neve and Lucanis being hardened does have an impact to their story. Neve won’t see the light in dock town and thus rely on more death getting things done and sticking to the shadows. While Lucanis becomes more paranoid if he is hardened and feels as tho him and spite will never see eye to eye.
Illusion of choice? No, I disagree there. There are major changes to the game depending on what you choose. And see Shadie's companion video for more info about hardening. As for bad writing... well, I don’t disagree with that. The choice itself was good and meaningful, but the justification for the choice was lacking. They could have done that better.
@@TheKingdomEntertainment I chose to defend Minrathous, as it seemed like a far more politically important place to have the most influence at. Treviso getting schwacked and Lucanis getting defensive about it felt reasonable. But the game tried to force a TOUGH CHOICE moment, but I just never bought into it. I knew the writers just felt Rook would have a major impact because they're the special snowflake of a Hero archetype, so none of the guilt tripping even mildly worked. If Rook's so effective, and they can only help one city, then fair enough; you can't be in two places at once... I just wanted my Rook to state that matter of factly. Blaming them is ludicrous. So yeah, not great writing. It wanted a dramatic choice, but fluffed the execution of the idea. I'm curious to see how Minrathous looks Blighted, though. Honestly, I really didn't like Treviso as a setting, so I partly chose for that reason as well. Blight gave it a little much needed character...
You can’t romance Lucanis if you choose Minrathous, but you can romance Neve if you choose Treviso. It’s obvious what city the devs want you to choose and is the canon choice. Also blaming Rook is idiotic. Wasn’t a fan of that. The entire conflict is contrived and makes no sense how Minrathous fell when they are fortified and have a mage army.
What was missing for me… what I think this game really needed was an origin. I kinda needed to see Rook meet Varic. I had trouble believing that they’d known each other for years.
I think it was only for a few months, since around the time Rook was kicked out of their organization
@ I’m hoping it will be a dlc, that’d be cool
@@mathewcooper8505 hate to say it but the devs said they have no plans for DLC or Expansions due to low sales
@ well that blows :(
@@shimmyking4 it’s not due to low sales, the game had a good launch. They were saying they had no plans for DLC even before launch. I think they just want to move on to mass effect which has been in preproduction for like a year
I think overall I like the story in Veilguard very much. My biggest complaint honestly is I wanted more. I wanted more of Tevinter. I wanted more of Kal Sharok. That sort of thing.
I agree, I wish there was more! I enjoyed what we got, but it could have been even better with more worldbuilding, more choices, more conversation. It feels like they did what they could with what they had after all the development issues the game had, and it also very much seems like they wanted to both tie up the previous cliffhanger and also give the series a soft reboot with characters and choices that might not see as much impact in this game but could make a huge difference in the *next* game if they continue with the same group, sticking to a more Mass Effect formula than a DA formula.
@@dormouse03 That would be awesome. If there is a DA5 I really hope for more depth and less breadth. Maybe just do one nation again. I don't think we need to stick to one city like DA2, but going back 1 nation in Origin would be perfect and really let's us dive deep in it.
@@Carblesnarky Yeah I agree, they would need to build up the next threat (the devouring storm? the shadow people?) slowly, and honestly I would love the chance to see the repercussions of VG on the characters and places we visited here. DA always felt a little more disconnected for me because so few of the characters crossed over from game to game beyond cameos, but the more personal choices here makes me feel like they are building those characters for their roles in the next game. That is my hope at least. The tagline at the end of "The Veilguard remains vigilant" gives Marvel vibes like we should anticipate their return.
Agreed! Thats why I think a DLC would incredibly benefit Veilguard in the same way Trespasser did for Inquisition. If only the DLC were be a little bigger and would expand what we already have, it would do wonders for the franchise.
@@Catinnas I agree giving Veilguard it's own Trespasser would be great. They would just have to fight the urge to be too ambitious in scope and give us a couple of locations to really dive into.
Honestly, only the very first part of the first act, and most of the third felt like Dragon Age. I’ve put almost a hundred hours (because I have to collect everything) and I found myself just skipping what wasn’t a lore drop or Solas. Too much was sanitized lore-wise and certain factions suffered from lack of depth. Certain characters felt infantized. The tone was all over the place. Cute one minute, dark the next. The Dalish didn’t feel like the Dalish. The Strife in game, was not the same Strife from Tevinter Nights. It’s a shame. It was like he was stripped of all personality. I did enjoy the Blood of Arlathan, the character Butcher from Treviso, and of course the entire third act. I also feel that Solas was dumbed down quite a bit. No followers. No wards guarding the crucial elements to his ritual. Just wood scaffolding. It’s so…not like Solas. Even if he wanted to be stopped, why react so strongly to being stopped? The inconsistency is frustrating. Also, Assan would’ve been taken from Davrin. I don’t see the wardens being okay with the last surviving griffin running loose and unprotected. And Lucanis is the world’s worst assassin. He took three times to kill Ghilan’nain. And gets a team member killed while doing so.
My comment is deleted? Well, that sucks, I put a lot of thought into it and it was polite.
Sometimes UA-cam eats comments. I’ve had that happen to me before more than once. Half the time I don’t even get the notification someone liked my post until a month later. I’ll check and it’s like 100+ likes and replies and not a single notification about it. UA-cam is weird.
Thanks for the cool video! I agree with alot of the points you guys brought up and thank you for talking about it. and wish we honestly could've had more despite enjoying the game, I feel like they just left alot out when it would've enriched the game even further to include the more divisive or even the stuff maybe they thought we wouldn't really care for? Idk but again thanks for making this video. ❤
Looking forward to your opinion! Not finished the game yet. Much love!
❤❤
(opens youtube) (sees your Solavellan compilation) (grabs my tea and snacks) 👀 🫖 🍵 🍿
I love that we had exactly the same reactions lol
Isn't he just glorious
Big Fish is a feraxian shark which is a KOTOR reference!
I love your Rook's hairstyle. You did a great job in creating her.
thank you! i love her so much
Lavellan's romance for Solas is a SIMP
Funny, content that lasts just under an hour has been living rent free in my head for a decade! Then lets add the measly 20 mins that followed as well! So, um, what are everyone's thoughts about that ending there? I was a little sad Lavellan's forgiveness wasn't enough for Solas to stop, thankfully it seems to work out in the end. :) I really wanted the inquisitor at the Lighthouse, for her to see the music room and murals. Honestly, I'm just happy to have a conclusion to this love story.
55:20 "I'm just in the middle of some calibrations." If she mentions anything about "Reach" and "Flexibility", I may have a new permanent romance choice. 😍
I will edit this comment when I finish your video and collect my thoughts, but I have to comment: took me ten years to learn that her legs buckle when they kiss, like he’s truly making her come undone. How breathtaking. EDIT: I lean more towards “yes they did it” but am content that it wouldn’t be shown on-screen. I always thought their romance path got its strength in how private it is (private, not secret). In the kiss scenes, there is no one but the player witnesses their love unfolding. There is an interview with Trick Weekes (I need to find the full one) where they reveal that in original drafts of the romance, there WAS an idea they were entertaining where it would show Solas and Lavellan have a scene of passion, but they scrapped it because it was too similar to the Blackwall one. In another world, we might’ve had to see Solas do a walk of shame.
how are the animations so much better than in veilguard
Yes let me revisit this trauma again 😂❤ I love them together forever your honor
So excited to follow along!
<3
Your choices😅 ngl seeing "Solas dissaproves" always gives me anxiety. 😬🫠
He disapproves, but he still loves her 😘
@ladysulevin I know 😅 It's probably healthy for both of them.
8:00 Sounds like Isabella - DA2
