Backing track? Nah, live orchestra. The big shows / TV stations had house orchestras back then.
They gave me a limited copyright claim at my edit because a song that's not even of them, now its banned in Russia and Belarus
CD > vinyl 😺😺😺
Gardenias is one of the best songs ever written and Palimpsest is my favourite album of all time :)
@@Captain_Yata it's a great song!
He wasn't singing to a track, there was an abbreviated orchestra. In those days (I saw this when it aired on TV) tracks weren't used unless the performer was going to be lip syncing to the record. On the Andy Williams show the performances were always live, no track. For a rock band the musicians would be playing live too. After this performance, the song belonged to Bobby. Nobody has ever matched him. Interestingly, he was a bit nervous because his mom was in the audience.
Good video, Im also a RME user (MADIface Pro). Totalmix is very flexible and has allowed me to use my interface for live playback on tours, home studio sessions and for the past year, using it to live engineer some small events. I only have access to the onboard 3 band EQ’s, so I have sometime passed audio through Ableton or Apples AU Lab which is a VST host. In terms of input reordering, would using the “layout presets” in Totalmix help you? While you won’t be able to reorder you can create a “drums” layout, for example to just see your drum inputs, and a “vocals” layout or anything else you may need. You can have up to 6 layouts per workspace. You can also extend that to the remote app for you clients by only having the channels showing for their mix. If I remember correctly I think synthax UK did a video on this in one of their videos. Hopefully that can help. I’m glad I got the RME interface as it’s versatile and being able to use it for live work, has been great. Having the MADI connection means I could add the 12 mic for extra inputs and MADI is also a good interface to the digital networking protocols. I do wish I had the dynamics and room eq on my interface, so maybe an upgrade/addition will happen Also, in one of the RME livestreams during lockdown, it was mentioned Totalmix remote can be used on android using Wine. I have no idea what that is as I’m an iOS user, but that may be another thing to check out
Honestly, it doesn't really match Lexicon, at least not the higher end range. Sounds very metallic. Maybe the recording is just a bit too wet?
@@meilstone the recordings are purposefully on the wet side to show off what the reverb sounds like (from memory anyway, without watching the video myself again.)
Your explanations were great. The use of TotalMix goes exactly as you described it, and that took me a while to learn. The software section can do the route reassignments, as this is set up in the DAW, so I wonder if you have an aversion to setting up your DAW session with the channels routed where you want them. I know input monitoring is more precise and latency free, and that’s why most people are adamant about working from inputs. But I do almost everything in the DAW anyway. So my channels are moved side by side, although the inputs are coming from all over the place. I don’t have clients to cater to, and I have a much smaller total channel count from a Fire face UC and UFX, the original editions. No need to send submixes to various headphones. No room correction going on. No ProTools either, it’s FL Studio that does my I/O. So for my much more simplistic needs, my only complaint is keeping the WDM, and Windows to use my Speakers as the default audio channel. Many times Windows boots up with no sound, because the speakers are suddenly assigned to a different channel. That’s it for me. 💪😜
@@jimshomestudio thanks, and thanks for watching! Yeah for me input monitoring is crucial for me, I don't monitor in pro tools at all, I do all my control cue monitoring in totalmix and same for headphone submixes. So it's a bit of a nightmare as I'm dealing with up to 20 simultaneous mics a lot of the time and multiple headphone mixes. I love the way totalmix handles monitoring and submixes but it's massively let down by the lack of channel reordering, I find it a huge failure of the software. The only solution really is patch bays, but currently not all my preamps run through patchbays, and it just seems dumb when totalmix is otherwise perfectly capable.
@@jimshomestudio agree with how it manages audio in windows too, although I don't have too much issue with it switching output (only happens very occasionally for me.) One thing I find annoying is I have to remember to switch my ufx iii on first before my pc - otherwise windows won't see it and I have to shut down and reboot my pc (restart won't work.)
@@TheBunkhouseStudios Try using it in USB3 mode, it will solve this problem
@@Blewis-Diarrheo yeah I'm using it in usb3 mode
@@TheBunkhouseStudios Always get it confused with the UFX+, sorry. If you disable your USB controller and then re-enable, does it recognize?
I'd much rather deal with the actual developers being cold (or simply just not explaining ad nauseum why certain things aren't possible or will take years to rewrite) than deal with talking heads that just yes you to death and not follow through. If you can't handle the realness, then pick up the phone and call Synthax Audio and speak to a support person there. Otherwise, great video - the title alone is enough to perpetuate a false belief that TotalMix is bad. 👏
@@Blewis-Diarrheo the video title is really just playing part of the UA-cam game, especially for a small channel like mine. It's a balancing act between clickbait and trying to hook people in. I try not to be too clickbaity. Overall I think totalmix is very good, and there's nothing else quite like it on the market imo. But I do find it falls frustratingly short in the areas mentioned in the video, many of which at least to the average user seem fixable. The channel reordering thing is a huge one for me and just seems a bit daft that they won't address it. I see where you're coming from regarding RME support, but personally I don't see it as 'realness' - moreso a lack of customer service skills. Synthax are great but they have no hand in totalmix development! Thanks for watching the video and appreciate your comments ❤️
@@TheBunkhouseStudios Yet Synthax provides a great deal of support, and they're very good at it. You're saying RME has a lack of customer service skills, when Synthax is the one who handles it. I have made MANY inquiries to Synthax over the years and have had great results.
i have a thing whit the cable conection to mi mixer i need help sorry
Vinyl is a way to experience art. To me, it feels like literal magic. It's a crack that makes music. It's also nice to have big artwork of the albums.
Great video! I love your setup. I’m curious how you record your ATEM mini multi cam footage while connected to OBS? Another question, how did you mount your touch screen displays into your desks?
@@CrazyRainbowHippie thanks! This is an old setup now, but those touchscreens were held in place by just resting on pieces of wood attached to the side pieces. The atem mini setup runs through a box that blackmagic makes that allows you to take the network stream output and convert it to hdmi. That hdmi output then runs to a hdmi to usb capture card into OBS. That way you can use the usb c output still for direct video recording to an external drive.
@@TheBunkhouseStudios thanks so much for your quick reply! I figured it was somewhat of a workaround with the Atem Mini. It's too bad there isn't an easier way.
@@CrazyRainbowHippie yes it would be great if out the box there were two usb c ports - one for recording to SSD and one to connect to your computer. The workaround is a little convoluted but works flawlessly once set up and is a breeze to get working too.
@@TheBunkhouseStudios that’s great to know. I’ll try to configure a similar setup.
@@CrazyRainbowHippie best of luck with it!

He was sick at this time with a cold. That accounted for him taking a breath where he normally wouldn’t. He was also nervous because his mom was there in the audience, seeing him perform live for the first time. Note his little smile after hitting that last high C. He knew he nailed it ❤

it's a great plug in!
I don’t believe it. You’re a sound engineer?!! Everyone knows that there was a live orchestra playing on the Andy Williams show!!! If you are going to evaluate a song perhaps you should familiarize yourself with how the music was done in each era.
I've always hated vinyl records, even when I was a kid, that is why I tried to make a tape recorder in the fourth grade, I didn't succeed obviously, but at least I tried! The ticks, and pops, plus surface noise, and the eccentricity of vinyl records drove me (when I had enough money), to purchase a used teak A1500U, reel-to-reel tape recorder, but I could easily still hear the difference between "source and tape", the dreaded tape hiss. In 1978 as an engineering consultant for the "Great American Sound Co., I traveled to Japan to visit GAS dealers and the Tokyo Electronics Show. In the Sony booth at that show, I saw for the first time, a model PCM-1, 12-bit digital processor playing music from the video track displaying thousands of black and white, undulating bits on the monitor, from the same SL-8200 Beta max VCR I had at home, I had to own one of these! In 1983 I attended an AES meeting featuring Marshall Buck who was presenting his new "coaxial two-way" loudspeaker he had designed for Cerwin-Vega! In his demonstration he was utilizing a "vocal-only" recording of a female singer that sounded fantastic with an incredible "dynamic range" and no background hiss. Immediately after Marshall's demonstration, I walked up and asked him what equipment was playing back his recording of this singer? He pointed to this diminutive silver box, and said I'm using a Sony PCM-F1, 16-bit Digital Audio Processor and a VCR. I said how much for the PCM-F1. He said $1,500.00, and I said sold! I built a portable recording rig that included the PCM-F1 and other custom-made equipment that I utilized for various musical performance recordings made on location and I won an Emmy for an outdoor performance of the opera Faust! I've been a digital advocate ever since, if you wish to learn more about my current endeavors, search UA-cam with the following: "JBL SYNTHESIS CREATOR", and ALSO: "HOWTOHOMELIFE". If you have questions, feel-free to call me @ 818-314-7275 Pacific time. David Riddle
I actually never expect live events to Sound like the record (and j am very suprised when they do)... But i am so frustrated by having to guess what song is played at the Moment because everything is just basically white noise while the bass trying to CPR me... Now that you mention it i see some of the reasons that make it challenging to get live music Sound right, but still I wonder: can't you just turn the bass drum a little less loud so i can hear the damn guitar solo?
@@Michaah yes, in most cases you can. Having the kick drum loud with lots of low end is definitely a trendy thing in the last decade or so. It's often overdone. There are factors though like with single point source PA systems where the engineer further back in the room will have the low end balanced where they're stood, but it will be more overpowering stood closer to the PA stacks. That's unavoidable without line array systems as that's just how a speaker works - the closer you are to it the louder it will be.
@@TheBunkhouseStudios thank you for the response :)
@@Michaah no problem, thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you and thanks for watching!
Your channel so your call, but when you pause one of if not the best live performance on record in the middle of a run or line, I would so appreciate you backing up just a tad before resuming. Maybe just me but the way the pausing was done really ruined the whole thing for me sorry to say.
Thanks for the feedback, I know some people prefer that with reaction videos. Some people dislike that though haha! It's something I've thought about before though

@@JamesBaker-g1w that's awesome! Glad he enjoyed it!
Can you react to mine? It’s called traumatized By YoungT7
Thanks for acknowledging this. It's an absolutely ridiculous and upsetting situation, and one of those sad, nonsensical, supposed "norms". It would make much more sense for appropriate sound levels to be used, than to have to wear ear plugs. None of the music events I went to before 2019 were too loud, in 2019 I went to one that was too loud and two that weren't, but the music events I went to in 2021 and 2023 were both too loud. Could it be the case that my perception of what's too loud has changed. or has the situation just been more of a thing recently?
I wouldn't say gigs have necessarily gotten much louder. I've worked in live events for over a decade now and I would say they have always been just as loud. Small venues are the biggest challenge. I think people these days also expect a concert to sound like a record with perfect clarity and intelligibility between instruments which just isn't possible - especially in smaller venues, which are often acoustically untreated rooms with loud PA systems to compensate and loud instruments like drum kits and guitar amps on stage. There's no simple solution and part of it is just down to physics and acoustics - gigs will always be loud. There's also the way our hearing works with the fletcher munsen curve that means louder music sounds more exciting to us. People want it loud, but then will also complain about hearing damage. There's also situations like with night clubs where it would just not work if the music was at a comfortable low level. New technology is emerging all the time though and speaker designs are improving all the time which will help combat these issues.
With your self-gripped opinions...I'd have thought you knew the final note bobby sang.
Why? I'm not a mind reader. Thanks for watching but there's no need to insult me over a UA-cam video you didn't like.
@@TheBunkhouseStudios You don't need to be a 'mind reader' You'd know. That's what it's all about. No insults whatsoever.

I would go as far as saying it's a Poorman's Eventide. I bought mine for $149 15 years ago brand new, and my only criticism is I didn't buy 2. *It's also a bit extreme for some needs as well where you need a delay, a modulation or a reverb, but you don't need 20 parameters to adjust.* For this reason, I bought 2 Virtualizer Pros, and they have moderate parameter controls, and are ideal for using on a guitar amp's effects loop or when you don't want to spend an hour programming a reverb or modulation for some vocals or an acoustic guitar. I greatly see the Rev2496 as a piece of studio gear to put on your mixing board's loop, mastering through your board or pursuing a commercial quality recording. *With all that said, PC's and even Android tablets provide so much now that a $100 tablet can genuinely replace the powerhouse rack units still on the market today.* Even 20 years ago I talked to a lot of other musicians online that constantly used the phrase, "just mouse it", meaning add your effects with your DAW after the fact.
yes, I must admit it can be easier and quicker to pull up a plugin when wanting to dial in a reverb quickly. The interface on the rev2496 is a little clunky and slow. I don't think I'd ever get rid of it though and would recommend it as a useful tool to anyone mixing in the studio
@@TheBunkhouseStudios I haven't used it in so many years I forgot how lol. There have been quite a few unites over the last 20 years with poor control system designs. Zoom had some of the best interfaces with great simplicity in operating them even on the most in depth units, but even their G5 for guitar which is my favorite modeler/FX unit to date was a nightmare. The virtualizer pro, on the other hand, is so simple you can master it in 5 minutes without even looking at the manual.
@@JonDeth yeah i think generally these kind of rack units with extensive parameter control are always going to struggle to compete with DAW plugin UI design
@@TheBunkhouseStudios this for sure and even in regards to other hardware, sometimes just 4, 6 or as many as 8 parameters with an intuitive interface are just more convenient. I have had units I outright returned because there were so many parameters, I had no use for them, and they just got in the way. I say this as a shred and sweep metal and instrumentalist.
@@JonDeth yep I agree, there's something to be said about simplicity at times. You can get lost in tweaking things rather than just focusing on being creative when there's too much to dive into
The idea is that the signal can be decoded using DSP and HRTF to earbuds. If that's the case you can make an equal argument you can do a pretty good simulation with some nice headphones. I would rather buy some nice headphones than add a silly load of speakers around my studio.
So far the general consensus that I've been getting is that it's difficult to get good results mixing in Atmos in headphones. It makes sense to me that the best mixing environment would be a full Atmos rig, but then that becomes a huge stumbling block for most engineers.
Absolutely NOT! Atmos is a dead parrot! Good riddance!
I guess only time will tell!
I fully agree with you. Feels more like a marketing campaign. I don’t see it taking over stereo anytime soon. This also bumps the cost up for consumers and engineers.
I certainly think it's going to take a lot for it to become widely adopted and realistically I don't think it's going to happen. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out!
CONGRATULATIONS Marc, looking GREAT! 😀❤️❤️✊
Thank you 😀
Pro Tools 👌🏿👌🏿
Even though it has its issues (I guess anything does though) it still hands down will always have the best workflow and editing for me. Tried many other DAWs and none have ever clicked quite the way pro tools does. Luna does look interesting though!
Nice
did you enjoy your cameo
