Scottish Wildlife From A Kayak
Welcome to Episode 7 of Paddle and Flow (ignore us both calling it Episode 6 🤪)
For the first episode of 2025, Alex and Nicola have an extended chat about marine wildlife on the East Coast of Scotland.
It’s the wildlife that helps make sea kayaking special and we’ve been lucky to have had some magical wildlife encounters while on the water. From our fabulous dolphin encounters of 2024 to visits from inquisitive (and hungry?) seals, and flypasts from many different seabirds. We also talk about the animals we haven’t yet seen, but hope to, and those that took us by surprise 🐳🦭
Be sure to listen right to the end to find out Alex’s affectionate (?) term for puffins!
Thanks for listening 🐬
(We apologise for referring to the Shetland orca pod as the 57’s when they are in fact the 27’s.)

    I experienced what you describe. I kept seeing kayaks for sale and really wanted to have a go but didn't have a clue how to start. I took a short taster course but asked if I could use a proper sea kayak rather than a sit on top because I wanted to see what it was like. The course was very poor. Too few instructors with too many paddlers and much too rough conditions for beginners. I was given a sea kayak with no splash deck. I had seen lots of people in kayaks around the coast and it looked easy but my boat was taking on water and I couldn't stay upright and spent a lot of time in the water being hauled out by the instructor who was also towing a little boy who was crying. I suddenly learned that I didn't know what I didn't know. It was at least two years when I got on a better two day course and began to learn the things that I needed to learn to stay upright and in the boat. Since then I've learned a lot from just watching and being with more experienced paddlers but I have reached a plateau in the learning process. I have not managed to get a roll as yet but I am fairly comfortable in rough conditions. We keep talking about doing some work on rescues and in surf but when we get on the water its always easy to say we will push the envelope and get wet next week. Somehow I've got to nearly sixty and I have realised that there is so much that I want to learn about paddling in the sea and I am aware that I could be running out of time.

    Helmet = warm! But I also can confirm from recent painful experience that if you come out your boat in any conditions, it WILL hit you! Throw lines are useless on the sea, best for rivers. Waist mounted tow line is invaluable on the sea even if you're on your own. Dump the neoprene boots over your drysuit... They'll just hold cold water against your foot, you can't warm it as you would if it was next to your skin. Try an old pair of trainers. I had trouble until I swapped over last winter and it works a treat.

      For me a dry suit is very new just getting the hang of what to wear on my feet. 🦶 thanks for watching Alex

    If you come adrift from your boat, adrenaline will keep you warm! Ask me how I know 😅 Skill comes in risk assessing.. Can I/should I? Have I the skill to do it?Have I the skill to get myself out if it goes wrong? Will it put someone else in danger to rescue me... Still, things happen, but it's an inherently risky sport, and we can't predict the unexpected!

    • @PaddleandFlow
      @PaddleandFlow Місяць тому

      Totally agree, Risk is an expected part of the sport but having the ability to understand what you are getting into. Well that’s another story and forms part 2 of this episode out on Sunday.

    I paddle in Pembrokeshire. I do most of my paddling in winter. My drysuit is almost always too warm. I recently bought salopettes which I can wear with a light cag and a merino base layer. I have never felt cold whilst in the kayak and have only wet exited once when not planning to and although that was winter I wasn't cold. Getting changed in the car park though brrrr

    Don't bother about fitting a compass on the Virgo! They're playboats.. Get a clip on compass if you're going offshore. My orange virgo is Clemmy (short for Clementine ) Alex, go radge, get the bright green one 😜

    I am currently going through the comfort, fit issue with the Scorpio. I left the thigh pads where they were and moved the seat as far forward as I could. This seems to be creating an issue with the seat because it is a long way from the back of the cockpit. My skirt is a bit tight and it forces the back rest of the seat down when I put it on. I had one very uncomfortable paddle where I was pretty much sitting on the back rest . Yesterdays paddle was much better because I used an older skirt that wasn't so tight but I still think that moving the seat a bit rearward would be beneficial but will mean moving the thigh braces. I also have a Stratos which has been brilliant and a great boat to start my kayaking journey. I have a bit of everything in it including up to 40km paddle on the Lleyn.

    • @PaddleandFlow
      @PaddleandFlow Місяць тому

      Hi, thanks for your comment, it’s interesting to hear your challenges with the Scorpio. It sounds like moving the seat rearwards slightly will help with your spraydeck issue. Do you notice any difference in how the boat handles with the seat further forward? I decided not to move the seat, thinking instead that it would be easier to move the thigh grips having done so in my Virgo with no issues! I was so close to selling my Scorpio but I’m glad I persevered with the cockpit set up as it’s a brilliant kayak once it’s comfy. If you’re on Facebook, it’s worth joining The P&H Owners’ Club if you haven’t already. Generally everyone is very helpful with boat tweaking issues like this. I don’t think you can go wrong with the Stratos, I’ve only heard good things about it. Good luck with your Scorpio! 🙂 Nicola
