Tune, Tone, Time - Three Places We Use Numbers in Music
Part three of a series of short videos talking about understanding how numbers are used in describing aspects of music, bass playing, and chord theory.

Bassi-ic Chord Theory: Part II
Переглядів 9121 годину тому
This is a follow-up to my last video, which introduced diatonic (using only notes in the key) chord building. In this video, I give examples of chord changes being simplified to a numerical expression. I use the I Vi ii V progression (1 6 2 5) and the note-skipping technique to arpeggiate the chords in the progression and move them into different keys.
Bass-ic Chord Theory, aka the 145, aka Those Scary Numbers in Music

An introduction to diatonic (using only notes in the key) chord building. Several realizations after filming this. First, at one point in the Video, I say something about a flat seven or a dominant seven, which might get confusing in the context of the video, where I am stressing that the scale tones can be labeled simply 12345678. In that section, when I mention the Dominant seven, I am talkin...

Shaky Ground bass solo 8.11.24
Переглядів 954 місяці тому
I know I have been off the grid a little bit lately, this has been an incredible season of gigging in Maine. Five gigs last week and five more this week! This clip is from our performance Sunday 8.11.24 at a place called Trail’s End Steakhouse out in Eustis, Maine. Still adjusting to in-ears, and to the new Ampeg but loving the journey and having as much fun as I can along the way.
Ampeg PF-50T Unboxing
Переглядів 1957 місяців тому
I came home to an exciting New Gear Day experience and thought, why not share it? No playing yet, just unboxing. After I recorded this video, I got it plugged and going, and man, does this sound great. I'm always a fan of an amp that, even at low volumes, gives me the full and rich sound we want to hear from our basses.
"Littlefield" Livestream Apocalypse March 23, 2020.
Переглядів 388 місяців тому
Please excuse the potato-quality video of this FB livestream I did back in quarantine. I wrote this piece in the early 90s while in the youthful throes of a crush I had on a lovely young woman with the middle name Littlefield. How could I not swoon over someone with a middle name like that? Anyway, I digress... I have played the theme and variation game with this melodic progression ever since....
Epiphone Jack Cassidy Bass - Quiet Acoustic Calypso Start to the Day
Переглядів 6010 місяців тому
In the early 90s, I became infatuated with a few of the worship songs of the time that leaned on the Calypso vibe (and just everything that Abraham Laboriel did). For whatever reason, this bass brought me back 30 years in time this morning, and I love that effect of being transported randomly by a different instrument.
Morning Warmups - 5-String Major Scale Practice
Переглядів 435Рік тому
You know it, you love it! The major scale. Here, I am starting on the E string of my five-string bass, incorporating the ninth degree of the scale and going down to the sixth below the root to incorporate all five strings into my practice. This is around 6 a.m., so I hope you'll forgive any silliness!
Fiyah Bass Solo - Last Gig at the Annex (for the season!)
Переглядів 57Рік тому
Here's a short clip from our last gig of the season at one of our favorite little venues in one of Maine's most popular tourist destinations. I know. I share a lot of bass solos. As bass players, we're almost always about the groove, and I promise that's how I spend 95% of the night, but when I get a chance to step out, there are certain things I'm working on that I think show in this solo. I t...

nice playing and great review, it gives a good idea of what this ubass can do, it helps very much, your walking is so good 👏
Super cool! Thanks for sharing. Thais opens up a new realm of possibilities. Thank you!
Great playing and tone!!!
Regáleme un bajo de esos..🙏
Lo siento amigo, no puedo ayudarte. ¡Buena suerte!
Good principal
👍
Good playing. Not good sound. There is simply no replacement for big wood moving big air.
I used an old wash cloth, I need to experiment on the thickness, but it does work and sounds great! Thank You Sir!
We have the same last name and soon I’ll be getting the same bass. What amp are you using. I’m getting a decent ampeg amp for about 350.
@@jamesobrien1614 for most gigs now I use an Ampeg PF50T and an Accugroove TRI112L cabinet, great warm sound!
Love my UB804! It has a sound all of it's own that is very different than an electric, and somewhat close to an upright. Yet, the sting length allows the use of standard bass strings. Also, it is almost as transportable as a regular electric bass. That is one issue with a double bass, the size. I play mainly on Electric Bass, but there are some songs I just have to use the EUB on if I want the right sound and feel.
I always love unboxing stuff from Sweetwater... And same on the candy... bit-o-honey is the best! My current rig (which I only use for home practice... lol) is a Hartke TX300 and a 210XL.
I got one and I love it! Full-time upright bass player in the past, but due to sickness do not any longer have the strength to play a real one for long. This thing is the perfect solution to my issue. The shortest scale makes the fingering easier and the action is perfect for someone with reduced strength.
Hi, Mark. I'm glad you found a way to keep playing. This bass is fun and inspiring. Every time I try a tune with it I find my approach is totally different than it would be on the upright or regular electric fretless. Have a good weekend!
@@MaineBassGuy thanks for the response, and same to you, my friend!
Absolutely fantastic ❤😊
People “listen with their eyes”. They see something that’s vertical, like a double bass, rather than horizontal like a bass guitar, and they think “ooh, JAZZ…..”
I don't think you're wrong. I played with a cat for years who was adamant that I play the old doghouse even though I found it very challenging. He knew I wasn't that strong on the instrument but thought the proper aesthetic was more important than being able to play more confidently. Video killed the radio star.
Love this mate ...... I just ordered a 5 stringer ...805 its called...
Love the aesthetic lighting!
Thanks! It was a might practice spot in my entryway for a while. Don’t think I ever forgotten about Every Little Kiss! I tried recording it today and just not confident enough yet, maybe this weekend!
Damn! What a treat. I was like, "I'll come back in 2 weeks"...and you posted it 9 days ago!! I listen to you on my way to work and this is a great addition to my morning drive. That whole album "The Way it Is" feels like you're driving through the mountains in West Virginia. Brings so much peace. Now if you only knew how to play "Every Little Kiss" haha! Just sayin....thank you so much, I really appreciate it and much more people will also once they come across it. ✌️
Oh yeah, I did it within an hour of getting your last comment. I should probably have spent more time with it, but this gist is there. :) Maybe I'll give Every Little Kiss some extra time lol
What string length and make? Thanks Sounds good!
Thanks! These are the factory d’adario chrome strings.
Thanks for the link! By any chance do you have the bass cover for "Down the Road Tonight" or "On the Western Skyline"?
Thanks for being interested. No, I don't have Down the Road or Western Skyline covers. Well, I didn't but... challenge accepted! I'm uploading a video now of On the Western Skyline!
@@MaineBassGuy Hell yeh! You have a new Subscriber. And your voice is fine. I judge the soulness of a song!

Much better...!!!
Thanks, Norm!
Can you bow these intruments?
Yes you can!
Love it! That whole album is very underrated.
It really, really is, I did a take on The Way It Is, too. (I have it unlisted because I'm just not a great singer lol) ua-cam.com/video/0ot3MbS6708/v-deo.htmlsi=15ad3AuNGjdl6ZVE
Good morning, nice .
Thanks, brother!
@MaineBassGuy got nick and Marcus doing a duo gig ,3 minutes away from my pad in Bristol, I'll upload tonight.,stay warm my friend.
sounds great! drummer has a nice relaxed feel
BRAD, How satisfied are you with ita upright sound, did the foam make a difference? I had Stagg EUB that sounded better than my current NS Design WAv 5, which takes some more ticuh to get ti close to an upright sound than the former. What is your take on the IBANEZ product?
It's definitely not the real thing, but it works with a mute in the band setting. I think in a real jazz trio it would not have enough tonal character to hold up.
Love love my favorite Christmas song very nice!🎉
chill
Hi Brad - nice vid. What strings did you use for this recording? Thanks.
These are the D'Addario Chromes (regular light) that the bass ships with from the factory.
What is that bluesy song at 1:17? I recognize it but can’t put my finger on it
It is the tune All Blues!
The G-String sounds as it got no sustain.
Miss you, man! I'm not that good at keeping up, but I love to pop in and watch your videos when I see em. Hope you're doing well, brother. (Also, little bit of sappy news, I still keep that piece of molten glass you gave me in the window by my front door. I look at, and appreciate it daily. I'll always be thankful for the time we lived in the same town ❤️)
Brian, that’s great! I love sappy. I’m glad that even though that was a short time a long time ago we’re still able to stay in touch. Cheers!
WE are thankful for YOU, my dude. And your insane Bass Skills! Happy Thanksgiving <3
siick
Much love from Germany man, keep on playing and having fun! Even though I do not celebrate it, I wish you a happy thanksgiving. Thank you for being the bass man you are.
Sounds real contrabass, that's more real!!
You could use the UB804 (and UB805 which is the 5 String Version) in Concert Band too because it's a good best of both worlds, you can still play w/ a Bow & it's Portable like the Bass Guitar.
There's a 5 String Version too called UB805. I don't think they make a Bow designed for this Bass, but you can use your favorite Double Bass Bow. This is based on the very 1st Electric Bass which was a Fretless Bass & it was basically a Scaled Down Electrified Upright Bass morphed into the Shape of a Guitar.
Better sound them others demo but Yamaha sounds much better.
take a car wash sponge, cut it down, make some string slots and place it down on the strings next to the bridge ala the nordy mute (which over mutes) . ua-cam.com/video/Cqu7Q4CiSp0/v-deo.html

That 1 Funky Solo Melodic and Grooving
Hey Drummer....... that is a GORGEOUS Color Drum Kit. Stunning..!!! :-)
Hi. Does this instrument require a lot more finger strength or pressure along the neck compared to, say, a P-bass or J-bass?
No. It’s actually quite easy on the left hand.
@@MaineBassGuyThanks. If you don’t mind, in your estimation, as easy on the left hand as a J-bass, or just easier than a double bass?
@@stanley5394hard to say, I guess that depends on the setup of the J bass. But probably similar?
That's really good, very groovy.
Very cool!
Nice listening to someone who really knows what he's on about. I'm coming electric fretted bass so thanks for the great insight.
Funky!!
