    They should improve a lot in taste and quality after a few years. I`ve never seen such a fast growing tree. I trimmed mine back and it grew like crazy and the cutting from it planted in the ground March 10 is already a very large bush. I planted 5 Dwarf Everbearing Mulberry trees this year too. The fruits are really good even when still partially red and they also grew very large and are over 12 feet tall with 2 inch thick trunks and they were tiny green twigs in March. Very easy to root. They love to be pruned so I`m cutting three of them back by half this winter and leaving the others for the wild birds. You can force them to fruit after the first fruit set is gone by cutting back branches by half and stripping most of the leaves to get 3 crops per season.

    • @eretabegardens
      @eretabegardens 18 днів тому

      Wow, that's impressive growth! What type of fertilizer did you feed them with?

  • @baneverything5580
    @baneverything5580 19 днів тому

    My cutting planted in March from last years`s Brown Turkey tree made a lot of figs. I`m still picking them here in Louisiana. Mine taste like very sweet peaches. Baby birds bit 90% of the tiny green figs off the big tree and a lot from the new tree. I didn`t know what was doing it. I saw the birds and got mesh row covers to wrap the trees. I cover the ripening figs with organza bags. Some of mine split too from the humidity at night but the bags protected them from bugs.

    • @eretabegardens
      @eretabegardens 18 днів тому

      It sounds like you have a productive Brown Turkey fig tree and it's great to hear they taste so good! I'm surprised to hear that baby birds bit 90% of the tiny green figs. Try and reduce the height of the tree this winter. I'm glad you used the organza bags.

    Hi Ben, I need your advise as usual. It’s October 28 2024. I am live in suburbs of NY. 1. What month I can prune my fig trees? 2. I have three fig small trees in the pots. Can I plant them in the ground now, or should I wait till spring? Please help. Thanks

    • @eretabegardens
      @eretabegardens 22 дні тому

      1, Prune your trees in Winter when all of the leaves have fallen off which means all the nutrients have been stored in the roots and when you cut a small piece of the branch and there is no sap then you are good to go. 2, Wait till Spring, protect your trees from cold now and plant them in Spring when the stored nutrients in the roots are back into the stem and branches, producing new leaves. So that the new roots will do well in the soil.

    I covered my Brown Turkey tree when it got very cold but this year it`s way too big to cover. I planted a cutting from it and 4 more trees that were supposed to be Celeste but they sent me the wrong kind. No fruits from them this year so it will be next year before I can see the fruits. Some have large slender long 5 finger leaves with 2 spurs on the back and some have spade leaves. Who knows what they are...either Violette de Bordeaux, Black Mission or Magnolia are my best guesses. A waste of at least two or three years.

    • @eretabegardens
      @eretabegardens 24 дні тому

      It’s always a gamble when you’re ordering trees online, I feel your pain! Hopefully you will like the figs that they produce.

    • @baneverything5580
      @baneverything5580 24 дні тому

      @@eretabegardens They may be Beer`s Black or Violette de Bordeaux which are basically identical. They`re breba producers and slow growers with tightly spaced leaf nodes. I see the double nodes for breba figs on the old wood. So I believe I`ve identified them after hours of research. If I`m right they will be good trees. Berry figs. The biggest tree with the large finger leaves has started producing the spade leaves above them on the same stem so all indicators say it`s the "Beer`s Black" (VDB) listed as one of the figs this nursery has. So maybe I got lucky.

      @@eretabegardens My Brown Turkey tree produced both Brown Turkey figs and Olympian figs this year. Very strange! One branch made very large lighter colored greenish/yellow figs with a slight purple tint on top with an amber interior that tasted like peaches and other branches produced dark purple sugar figs with a red interior. No hollow spot inside. If it does it again next year I`m taking cuttings of the branch with the peach flavor.
