God is With Us In the Valleys

In the midst of the valley we are walking through and the trials we are facing, there is comfort and strength in knowing that we do not walk alone.

Great words on small groups - thank you. What would you tell a small-town, small-church pastor who is on the brink of despair because he just can't get his flock to commit to small group ministries of any kind for longer than few week stints occasionally. This is a small, isolated Alaskan fishing town of hard-working busy blue-collar people who see each other on a regular basis around town, everyone "knows' everyone, there is little wide-spread commitment to regular Sunday morning attendance and folks are just content to leave it at that. He desperately wants an ever-growing church that is out turning the community upside-down for Jesus but it's just not happening and his sermons often reflect a sense of deep discontent and desperation about it and he seems to think that if only small group ministries took off, everything would change. I just wish he was content to faithfully preach God's word to the best of his abilities and just be content and joyful and happy to be sheperding this small flock without making us often feel like we are failing as God's church because he never sees the fruits of his ministry expects should be there. Anyway, thx again and just felt like sharing these thoughts.
Thomas, this is a real challenge for the pastor trying to find his way and for his congregation trying to understand how to contextualize his vision. Whether small groups are the answer or not, I can't say. Smaller tight-knit communities are harder to create small groups for because of their close relational ties, as it sounds like you are running into. As a supporter of this pastor, I would encourage you to show your support regularly, gently try to understand his perspective and the vision he feels God has given him for the church and community and look for the common ground the pastor can work from. I am always open to set up a conversation with pastors and trouble shoot their situation, so if this pastor is open to that, feel free to let me know here and I will make it happen. :)
