DIY wrapped tassel wall hanging
Create a unique boho style wall hanging using tassels and a simple yarn wrapping technique. This super easy tutorial is for anyone with basic crafting skills. A great project for beginners!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
• macramé cotton
• a coloured yarn of your choice
• cotton twine
• a length of dowel or driftwood
• scissors
• comb
• measuring tape
• a lint roller will also come in handy if you have one.
Combing out the tassels can get kinda messy
MEASUREMENTS:
• Tassel:
10 x lengths of macramé cotton
Mine were approx. 30cm each made by wrapping around an A5 journal
• Tassel Loop:
1 x length of macramé cotton
Mine measured random lengths between 80 - 120cm
In total I used around 75m of cotton to make the tassels
• Hanging Rope:
1x lenth of macramé cotton to suit your space.
Mine measured approx 1.5m in length.
You can make as long or short as you like.
SUPPLIES:
• Macramé cotton - 5mm single twist luxe cotton string (natural)
purchased from marymakerstudio.com.au
Product link:
marymakerstudio.com.au/collections/cotton-string/products/copy-of-5mm-natural-luxe-cotton-string
If you live outside Australia google ‘macramé cotton’ or ‘macramé string’ etc in your area, you should easily find a local supplier
• Scheepjes Yarn - Secret Garden, ‘Rambling Blooms’ **
purchased from bellemaeyarns.com.au
Product link:
www.bellemaeyarns.com.au/collections/scheepjes-secret-garden
**This yarn is a silk blend and is quite delicate. It is a pretty variegated yarn which gives you a subtle colour change throughout your design. It also creates a beautiful, slightly textured finish. If you decide to source the same (or similar) yarn try twisting before you pull through the wrap as it tends to break easily.
Again, google 'Scheepjes Yarn' and you should find a local supplier.
You can really use any yarn, in any fibre or colour you like.
• Tasmanian Oak Dowel - 22mm diameter x 1.2m length
Purchased from my local Bunnings Warehouse (Hardware Store)
Product link:
www.bunnings.com.au/porta-22mm-x-1-2m-tasmanian-oak-dowel_p0033445
You can cut to any size to suit your project. Available in varying lengths and diameters. Also available in pine.
GET CREATIVE!
The materials used in this tutorial can be used as a basic guide. Part of the fun of creating something is adding your own personal touch. Below I have listed a few simple ways to help you achieve a unique design.
Macramé cotton:
Experiment with thicker or thinner macramé string or maybe consider using twisted rope. Use more strands to create chunky tassels, vary the length, shape or colour used in your design.
Yarn:
Remember to choose colours that will suit your home décor. Experiment with different fibres to make or wrap your tassels - Different kinds of wool, thicker cotton or cord, chunky or hand-spun yarn, raffia, ribbon, fabric scraps use your imagination!
From start to finish this project took approx. 4hrs to complete.
Time will vary depending on the size of your project
