God of Gamblers Returns - End Titles - Styles Report Soul Mix.
After the massive success of God of Gamblers, a myriad of spin offs, parodies and outright ripoffs emerged to capitalize on the gambling film craze. Five years later, Wong Jing and Chow Yun-Fat reunited to bring us God of Gamblers Returns, the true sequel that sees Chow’s character, the incomparable Ko Chun, facing a new vicious opponent.
As with the first film, the tone is wildly inconsistent, vacillating between comedy to action to grim horror. Once again, Chow’s charisma and the gambling sequences uplift the film into something greater than the sum of its parts. Lowell Lo’s soundtrack too is a bit more uneven this time, and not quite as good as the first.
However, the main theme, which is only heard in full over the closing credits, is excellent. Whereas part one had a more straightforwardly heroic, rousing theme, this, while still majestic, is somewhat darker and has an almost bittersweet quality. This parties perfectly with the trials Ko endured throughout the film.
The unconventional arrangement lends itself to a funky, soulful mix beautifully. After trying a multitude of sounds I settled on this horn and string heavy arrangement, which evokes the jazzy spirit of the legendary Herb Alpert.
