Part 7 Early in his career Gibson did an abridged reading of Neuromancer, his first novel and the work that made him famous. It was in this novel that Gibson coined the term cyberspace. This reading was only published on audio-tape and is now out of print. The audio is high quality mp3 recorded from the original tapes. Artwork: davidsimpson2112.deviantart.com/gallery/

I wonder how many people have listened to this without noticing or seeing in the description that this is an abridged narration. Big sections of beautiful descriptions and world building missing.

I understand that this is an original recording from many years ago....but it's terrible. Imagine if Fifty Shades of Grey was read by Disney's Goofy. The tone, tenor, and various other qualities of this narrator's voice make it un-listenable.

Listening to an imagined future that was only realized for one third, with another third being complete fantasy, and at the end of the audio I hear "this book is continued on the other side of the cassette". Now I wonder what the future even is.

What a perfect example of how rarely, if ever, the author them self should do a narration/audiobook. There are exceptions of course, but this narration is just plain awful.

Forge Bulkhead grasped the edge of the vault door. For a long time Forge hrld very still , un seen tendrils 40 atoms thick squirmed slowwly within the fabric Uber Teflon. When 17 hours later Forge 'knew' it had a good hold it began to pull and pull and PULL. Forge's feet shifted and the floor under them groaned cracking with sharp pops. Then the vault door screeched and peeled back revealing the Quark Gun in a glass sphere at the center of a plain matte black room. Now it was time for more patience ,the Quark Gun was surely protected by more deadly traps...

You cant listen like a book from a versed author who can deliver tight descriptions and narratives. You instead have to let it "fall over" you. Just listen and let it happen, don't try to understand every sentence. Some of them are very very very very long. But the long messy descriptions will put you "in" the world.
