Chi Sau with Chu Shong Tin 2003
Apologies for the audio; this clip is from around 2003. I try to relax and point, but any tension he finds in me is magnified.

Chi Sau with Chu Shong Tin for the first time.

This is the first time I touched hands with Chu Shong Tin back in the 90's. I tried my best, but his power was something I had never felt before. It would cause me to tense up and I would lose my centre line really easily.

Thank you for sharing such a valuable video. What is the correct way to proceed when the partner has more power and it is not possible to pick up their arms without resorting to brute force? 😊

Sorry for the late reply. That's a really good question, but it's not a short answer. I can share my experience and how I overcame that; hopefully, it helps. I should mention that Sigung's force was very precise and often upset my center, putting me off balance. First, if someone has a downward force that is not focused forward, you can always run palms. To get to the point where you're not using brute force, the mind body need to be in the correct condition. We need to establish a strong centerline and then work on the basics: point to target, raise the spine, soften, and drop the back. From the spine, flow down the arm to the target. This is what I worked on; the ideas can vary from person to person. If we look at why we use brute force, it could be because we are only using the glenohumeral joint to lift the arm. The use of the shoulder incorporates the scapula, allowing for a wider range of motion. In Chi Sau, the Bong Sau starts its motion from the spine. The Bong moves in a circular motion supported by the back, not by lifting. Good luck and keep training, it's usually easier than we think

Thank you very much for your considerate and detailed reply. I sometimes do Chi Sao with some other branches. They are stiff but still has some power. I found Samuel Kwok lineage to be the most troublesome though they utterly lack mobility.

I have a question. How did it feel to do chi sau with master Chu? What was the sensation like?

In the early videos it was like being in a washing machine, I was always a step behind and just trying to catch up. The last video you see how open his elbows are and he just places the arm on me which I cannot do anything to move it. He wasn't even using all of his power, when he turns it up a little I just fold. Thanks for the question
