How much cello music is there?
Come explore the expansive repertoire of the cello with me.
From Baroque to early 20th Century, there are thousands of compositions that get almost no play time and dozens of masterpieces waiting to be resurrected by you and me.
In addition to the great quantity of fantastic cello repertoire that cellists learn there are many compositions (thousands) that lie in waiting. A large part of my objective in this channel is to share and make a library of recordings from the neglected realm. A fitting term is "Forgotten Cello Music".
Playlists are so far the best way I have found to organize things here on UA-cam. Much of the time you will find playlists according to the composer's name. However, as this is "Forogetten Cello Music" it is not very likely that many people will knowingly search for or happen upon a composition from any lesser known composer. So, I also try to organize according to period and region/country.
Enjoy.

Anton Hegner "Recreations" Book 1 No. 19 "Yankee Doodle" Learning from "Easy Melodies", as Hegner writes in the sub-title, are the familiar tunes of his day. His instructional book was published over 100 years ago. There are still tunes familiar to us even today such as this video's selection, "Yankee Doodle". Here, I only feature the melody, whereas the book contains preparatory exercises for ...

Silent night
Yes, indeed! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Did a recent audition on this piece and got second chair!
🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏
can i ask you how much you payed your cello?
Hi, my cello works for free. :)
The Swan 🙂
Absolutely :)
I think it is Saint Saen's Cello Concerto?
Right on!
American horror stories
Nice. Good guess but less American.
So touching. Loved your Silent Night.
Thank you, Ernesto. These Christmas carols speak volumes to me.
Sounds great 👍🏼
Thanks! I enjoyed playing it.
Selah is learning this song on the A string. Thank you for playing this for her. She loves it. 🥳😁
Yay, I'm glad I thought of it. :) It works so well for getting the fingers going.
It’s d because the string on the right is the thickest and also most to all cellos are made the same so the d will be the middle left string
Indeed. Thanks for your comment. Are you a cellist as well?
❤
indeed there should be no space, moreover your bridge is what is called S shape because you can see at the top its bending one way but it should be straight
Thanks. Good to know. And thankfully I have since had it repaired.
✝️ Happy Veterans Day Weekend!!! May the Lord bless you forever and always! Amen!
Same to you. Thank you. This is a superb hymn indeed. It is nice that it was included in a method book 120+ years ago.
Nice😊
Thanks to Breval for writing this interesting Rondo. :)
Ew pls go and practise
Isn’t this Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus? I remember I played it in my group class, the teacher had an arrangement for 4 cellos. To me at the time, it sounded “beginner-ly” glorious.
Why, yes it is! :) Suzuki Vol.2, No. 5 in C major also has it. This one is slightly different from the one I learned and teach. And I agree, doable.
Waooooo es increuíble, quisiera interpretarlo así algún día en mi exámen❤
Thank you and I hope you play beautifully as well.
This somewhat simpler method from Steve Blower: "Click on the note where you want to break the measure and use Tools>Measure>Split measure before selected note. Add a system break to the last note of the previous (now shortened) measure."
When I discovered this shorter method I was quite pleased.
How was the concert?
Very nice. We all had a fun time. Thank you! :)
thanks
Glad it is helpful. What did you find useful?
@@TravelingCello I really don’t know honestly, but for some reason it gave me some ideas how I can practice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That is just as well. I am glad it is useful. :)
Cello only makes this amazing. Great job. 👏 🎉
Beatiful😊
@@mettevunsjensen4094 thanks very much.
Beautiful!
Thank you.
I really like this piece. I think it works perfectly well as a solo cello. I have listened to it several times and I don’t miss the other part.
Yes, this Waltz really does it on its own in a single melodic line. I also added a bunch of reverb to give it a boost.
@@TravelingCello I did notice the sound difference, but dismissed it believing it was just in my head. Really cool! 👍🏻 Listening again, this time more attentively.
Interesting. Goes to show that when one edits the video all the details seem to be very noticeable but may not be that way to every listener. And it is also worth mentioning that I must have added an artistic amount odd reverb. Lol (mainly I make these points for myself to realize that I should be easier on my self-criticisms)
So beautiful
Thank you so much.
This is a great piece. We liked the Surprise. It’s fun. Enjoyable also. Thank you for playing. I can’t believe it a beginner piece. Impressive. 🎉
It was a fun one to make. Honestly, it is not exactly beginner material in today’s market but it was back then.
amazing, keep it up!
Thanks a lot! Much appreciated.
How about a contrabass playing pizz in the background?
That would be nice. Do you play bass?
@@TravelingCello I don’t, but I have always played with the idea. If I take another instrument, it would take time away from the cello. My teacher at Old Town once suggested me that I could play the cello through an octobass pedal. I kinda liked the idea.
@ErnestoGhinaglia oh. That would be good. I think the former cellist of Turtle Island String Quartet, Mark Summer, used something of the like.
@ErnestoGhinaglia and it always sounded really cool.
I like these pieces. Like you said, high musical level for the beginners of that era.
Indeed. It’s like they didn’t have digital distractions. Lol
Made me smile😊
That's great. Hahaha...
Beautiful.
Very! An excellent example of the higher musical level for beginners back in the day.
This is beautiful. Never heard of this composer before.
There are ten little numbers in this suite. Several are real gems, like No. 2 "Homesick".
Did you go look this Op. 126b up?
@@TravelingCello I haven’t yet. I’ve been a couch potato all evening. 😂
@ErnestoGhinaglia lol. Sometimes that is all the ambition one can muster. Hehe. I was pleasantly surprised by Gretchaninoff’s little pieces.
@@TravelingCello You just made me get off my a$$ and look it up. Found it!
it is the A string duh 🙄 i know my cellos
:)
It was the d string
. . . . . a before o but not before the Y?🤔🤨
This is not German romantic music - it’s Austrian romantic music!
Very true! Thanks for pointing that out. (Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Bruckner)
This is not German romantic music - it’s Austrian romantic music!
So if the bridge in your hand was so good, why are you using a new one?
@@1ralton1 that is a great question. I wish I could have figured out how to salvage it. Alas, I was unable to and, as I was told by several luthiers independently, the angle of the neck was no longer appropriate for that bridge. In essence, I might ultimately need to have major work done on the neck. At least from what I gather from the assessments.
To put it differently, the neck is now too low and the bridge is so old that it has lost its ability to serve in an effective manner.
You accompanying you would be fun for this one. 😁 I still prefer solo but it’d be fun to hear it all on cello.
Yes! I will do it.
I really like it without accompaniment. I greatly enjoy listening without any accompaniment as it enables the cello to really take center stage and be enjoyed. It also brings out your talents as a cellist allowing you to take ownership of the pieces with your added touches that always add life bringing the luster into the music. Keep this up. I enjoy your solos the must. This is a crazy piece. Super fun.
Thanks for the insightful comments and for the compliments.
Arron this is incredible. You played immaculately and added such emotion increasing its musical value. Your touch to this piece greatly exemplifies its beauty. Thank you for playing. You truly give it life as it needs. Wow!!! 👏 Seriously impressive.
Thanks very much. It is a lovely piece and I imagine this is something of how I might sound in a spoken prayer.
@matthewcolburn9330
This is a beautiful piece. I'd love to hear it without the piano. The end is incredible. Thank you for playing.
@@matthewcolburn9930 that is easily done. Try not to listen to the thin sound of my mal-adjusted cello however. Will tag you when I upload it.
Lovely!
Thank you.
Beautifully played!
Sublime! 1:21
It is a good moment.
This is a truly beautiful piece, and it sounds amazing as it is, just a practice session. Dad at the piano accompaniment, this is the luckiest a musician can be! …and this came right on my 60th birthday!
That’s great! All the best wishes to you and many more birthdays to come!
That's great - really helpful! Thanks very much!
Fantastic! I'm glad it helped. Thanks for letting me know as well.
Watch this at 2X speed. It is absolutely incredibly amazing.
😂😂😂 not only that but it improves the quality as well. 😅
Thank you - I struggled for a while, but your explanation was very good and fixed the issue. I think i started out at musescore 2 or so, a very long time along. Cheers
Hi, I’m very glad it helped. Version 2 is quite early isn’t it. I think I started around 3.2 or so.
