Hello friends! I'm Mel, from Mel's Exotics. I'm a Canadian reptile lover who specialized in keeping and breeding blue tongue skinks.
I've created a UA-cam channel to motivate myself to be more active with my reptiles after a depressing year in 2020. I post personal videos, videos about my friends and family members, and lots of videos about my various animals and the things I'm is up to. Cute animals, basic how-tos, new enclosure builds, etc.; my videos could include just about anything, and I'm always open to suggestions and new ideas.
Thank you for your support!

How do they cohab when they mature?
thank you so much for this video!! We're getting our first Skink tonight, and it's had mites for alil over a mth. Their already treating it. But I wanted to research what to do if it's not entirely rid of them yet. So informational!! thank you!!
Heat pack?
very cute! 💟💟💟
My frog also loves these, Mama the difference is that with the Frog I can actually see cuz I'm still swimming from within the Frog's belly
I’ve been looking for weights of a bts thanks so much for the video I just recently weighed my 9 month old skink. And was worried she was too big. But she actually at a good weight 484
Soon to be great UA-cam channel 🎉🎉
AAAAAA IM SO HYPED TO VEND THIS YEAR!!! Definitely helped cure my anxiety for the event and just get info on the buisneses in general, so tysm for posting!
Hi is the heat lamp your only source of heat for the enclosure? Thanks great video !!!
I just tonight found your channel, already forgot how. I think it was from a short. Anyway, I'm glad I did. I love reptiles and I think you're awesome :)
Excellent content
Pothos is looking great. Nice big leaves. If you use a stake or a trellis and get them to vine upwards, the leaves will grow very large.
LOOOVE the shirt!
Your skinks have the bluest tongues
Skinks are so freaking amazing
I love their freakishly small arms
Wow, that enclosure is gonna be epic
Tasty ass food, indeed 😂
Wow. I've never seen one with a tongue THAT blue
How are they doing these days? Enclosure working out?
Pothos dog 😂😂😂
음식먹는게 너무 귀여워요 감사합니다
What brand do you use? Thinking of trying a new brand for my blue tongue skink
Where did you get yours? I really want one too!
It would be nice to know how you keep this skink so active What temperature and humidity It could help monkey tail skink keepers to improve the keep As I don't think Solomon islands will ever export again. We need to breed successfully we'd love to have a care list so that we could be like you. Very good job. Thanks for your help greatly needed.
It looks pretty fun to install light fixtures :) I have done it myself too its really good :) were you installing 2 fixtures in this video?
Pavlovian methods
yummy!
Great vid thanks!
Thanks, never saw the ceramic bases with leads before. I ended up doing mine a different way because my cages do not have enough flat ceiling space to mount a 4-inch base where I wanted to - I used ceramic lamp bases commonly used in household ceiling lamps and that have a 3/8 threaded mount for a standard 3/8" diameter nipple and have wire leads. A single 3/8 inch hole in the cage ceiling holds the socket and allows the wires to exit the top unexposed inside the cage (get the sockets that have the wire connections covered.) Then I use some aluminum reflective tape to make the ceiling area around the socket reflective to heat. I was able to install this type of setup in Vision cages where the ceiling is not flat or has obstacles (the Vision 111 cage for example.) With lamp parts, it is best to keep to 50W or less. Requires 3/8 nipples, washers and nuts, all available online or in big box stores. (Very clean, single-hole setup that is easily removed if desired. If removed, the hole can be left as is or plugged with some epoxy putty, or lese leave the threaded nipple installed and use it to pass a temperature probe into the cage interior.)
Hello there!
❤️
Wow. Does the blue ever come out on this video !!
Hey Mama! Yay, glad to hear that! I was afraid this camera wouldn't be able to capture much.
I need one but non existent in the uk 😩
I'm sure they're out there, but probably either WC or extremely expensive. Keep an eye on local classifieds - that's how I found my first group. Or ask around in your local herp groups. Good luck!
He has gotten so big
Right?! Gabe is only a couple cm taller right now, and not for long. Watching these two play together is a delight.
I looooooove monkey tail skinks!!
As you should. Have you seen that Wicken's Wicked Reptiles has been working with them and showing them off on UA-cam a bit too? I can't wait to see how he does his new enclosure for them!
I saw some of that content. We didn't get a very good look at the enclosure, iirc. Love that channel though. You Canadians have some awesome herptubers
I would love to see an update of your facility, you had/have some beautiful blue tongue skinks. Also, sorry you were in this situation
If you get a chance to see the livestream tonight I'd be happy to do a "facility" tour and show off the animals here :)
Are you still needing a regime?
Hi JL. I'm trying really really hard right now to keep my monkey tail family. I'm spending my last dollars to try to upgrade their enclosure. If I can't figure that out in the next week or two I might still have to rehome them, but I really don't want to. We'll see how it goes :)
@@melsexotics it can be so heart-breaking. Your animals are beautiful. I kept a corucia years ago and have been considering adding one as a teaching animal. I take to venues and schools as a hobby. A local pet store has a juvenile and in considering if I want to get it I'm cruising youtube for anything I can find. Here is my info: zoocrewkids.blogspot.com/
I will warn you that almost everyone who gets one corucia ends up getting multiple. I find them excellent ambassador animals once they've settled and trust their handler, but you can't hand them off to people like with many other species, because the nails alone are enough to cut people. That said in my experience they love interacting with people (especially if those people have food), but I know not everyone has that experience with them, some are just downright aggressive I'm told. I'm currently trying to design an ideal enclosure upgrade for my family unit of corucia. I've learnt a lot over the past year with them and think I can design something that they'll really like.
How do you introduce them to another. I'm considering getting one but understand they do better in groups..... what steps do you go through?
I have never introduced MTS, I bought my current "family unit" of skinks already living together, possibly imported together, I'm not sure. I do absolutely recommend these animals have the opportunity to live with other MTS, and most people who get one quickly end up getting more to try to cohab them. They really do best with a compatible family group.
@@melsexotics I checked another source just now that have zoo bred yearlings available. They have informed me that one of the animals has already been an ambassador and is pretty stable temperamentally. Hopefully can make a good decision on this
A CBB young animals that's already used to human contact would probably be ideal for an ambassador animal.
Glad to see you are feeling better from the prior updates. Perhaps post a message on your Facebook to invite more viewers to the live stream.
That's a great idea, just got that post up. Probably won't get much traction so late, but at least we tried :) EDIT: I can't wait to see you again, maybe in March?!
Yay! Glad you're feeling better!
Thank you Grace! Yes, it's so nice to start feeling like myself again. Time to celebrate :) Thank you for the lovely comment!
@@melsexoticsHi! My name is actually Ollie. I know that's what my account says but due to certain circumstances I'm unable to change it. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks!
Ok Ollie, no problem and sorry for the misname. I can't promise I'll remember (I have some memory issues), but I'll try. Feel free to correct me if I ever get it wrong again :)
Hey, I caught Covid in August this year. It is hell and a living nightmare. What symptoms have you been experiencing.
Hiya! Thankfully I've had "mild" symptoms, but it was several days of fever, lots of brain fog and body aches, appetite issues (and loss of taste), etc. Only a bit of a cough thankfully, and no really bad symptoms. I'm improving every day, but I didn't expect it to mess with me so much. Thankfully I have lots of people around me helping me keep things going while I'm incapped. Can I ask how long until you felt "normal" again, if you do?
@@melsexotics hey I've had approx 14 symptoms through this. I don't feel better to live my life, I have terrible tiredness, my legs hurt as my muscles are solid and tight, I can't walk far without getting tired, shortness of breath and battling to get my voice back after I lost it due to a throat infection last month. I used to be able to do a 12 hour day and still run for the bus after work. This is a devastating virus that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
That sounds absolutely awful. I feel very lucky that I seem to have skipped most of the "bad" symptoms, but I still feel so "diminished" right now. My mom is still recovering, now fighting a throat infection herself. My great aunt is hospitalized. This illness is insane, I also would not wish it on anybody. I hope both of our symptoms ease up soon. Best of luck to you, friend!
@@melsexotics hope you and your family make a full recovery.
Hey ...if you're energy hasn't changed not sure if you've tried this if. I have felt different in the past couple of days. QI Ribose or D Ribose for people with ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia.
These guys are so hard for me to find 🥺they are so cool!
They are hard to find, though sometimes importers have them. However then you have to be ready for health issues unfortunately. CBB animals are rare.
I was looking everywhere for you but I guess I didn’t recognize your new hair 😢 but it looks awesome!
Sorry friend, I wasn't able to make the expo due to covid. Did you have fun there?
Feel better soon Mel
Thank you Karen. I'm slowly improving :)
I missed the beginning part as I was in the bathroom when my mom started it and I didn’t notice until I watched it again and forgot to update my comment sorry. Also I hope you feel better! And it was a lot of fun I wish you had been there.
No worries, friend. I am feeling much better already, thank you! I hope to see you at the next expo or get-together :)
I meant to put this on my post lol must of clicked the wrong one
Hello Steve, Mouse, and Kortny
You will survive and thrive, it sucks and hurts but the rains are when you grow. Once you get through this you'll be even more awesome and do more things!! :)
your doing an amazing job, i respect heavily what you do for these animals! keep your head up
You got this mel. It is rough you have a lot on your shoulders. And you might not have the business sense to do what you hope to do. But you have friends who can do it. And you have an awesome vision. We will help ya through it.
Peace to us all, we are not alone and we’ll be okay!!
