Freddie Johnson Interviews Steve Allen!
This was a rare chance to hang with Mr. Television himself, Steve Allen. A live on-air visit with a true renaissance man, Steve Allen had a brilliant life and he took advantage of it. In this visit I am focusing on a new album release (1993) that came out on the Concord Jazz label. You will hear some great music as well as some very interesting historic tid-bits from his life in many forms of show business. From humble beginnings in radio, comedy, and television, Steve Allen's story will amaze you! Enjoy, and please subscribe to my channel. I have a box full of archives that, when time permits, will become available to you and everyone to enjoy! Thanks for listening and please comment about your experience listening to his story.

Freddie Johnson Interviews: Artie Shaw on KPCC FM
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
I finally found this old tape after 26 years! This was a very special visit with The King of The Clarinet, the reclusive genius Artie Shaw, dating back to March 9, 1994. My KPCC FM morning show, "Classic American Music" was one of his favorites I later learned, and he'd tune in every weekday morning from his home in Newbury Park, CA. KPCC had just been granted a power increase and the transmitt...

Freddie Johnson Interviews: Louie Bellson on KPCC FM
Переглядів 2104 роки тому
Well, given the Corona Virus pandemic and all, and since I am stuck in the house for a while, I had some time to put this together. This interview was conducted live on KPCC FM 89.3 back in 1996. Louie Bellson was in town to play some shows at The Jazz Bakery in Culver City plus he had a new CD out. So we killed two birds with one stone and promoted everything. This was a short visit but a real...

From the archives, I present to you the second installment of my interview series from the early days at KPCC FM, Pasadena. This live radio interview is from December 8, 1993. That was a great year for me in regards to quality guests in studio. Joe Pass was an American musical legend who used to jam with Ella Fitzgerald, travel the globe playing guitar, and amaze all of us to this day with his ...

Excellent content. Thank you for posting, from Brooklyn NY.
Cool
He has stage 4 liver cancer at the time of this interview, his body probably doesn't feel right, but he refuses to hang up his guitar. Thanks for all the inspiring music Joe.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Very insightful.
I just looove to hear this!!!! Thanks for charing this!!!!!! My favorite clarinet. Just read tom nolans book about Artie.
Master!!!!!.......
love anita!
Thanks. Kind of depressing that you only have 120 followers and after one month only have five or six people hit the like button on this interview with Steve Allen. I found this because of the interview you did with Artie Shaw and I look forward to seeing what else you have.. if it gets too good I might have to share it to my Facebook page! :-) haha

So glad I stumbled upon this show. What a delight from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing Freddie. 😊
Nice work, Freddie! Great to hear Howard Alden on an album I'd never heard before. He's playing his you-know-what off on Steve's ballad, "I Should Have Told You So." And Howard's solo on "After You've Gone" is brilliant!
Thanks Dan. I have a lot more to come, my archives are vast. Terence Blanchard is up next I think. C u soone jazz man!
Right on!@@freddiejohnson5623
This truly is a TREASURE 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🎂🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💝💝💝💝🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for your comment and for checking this episode out. I was warned by his agent to not ask about "the women" and Frenesi/Begin The Beguine". I stayed clear of that by Mr. Shaw took his own initiative and brought it up anyway. He was an impressive individual and has great energy. He was a regular listener of my morning show and actually asked his PR guy to call me. What an honor. More to come...Margaret Whiting, Steve Allen, Maynard Ferguson, LIttle Jimmy Scott, etc!!
God bless you…. For uploading ….Yes, he was Amazing a real Genius….🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💝🇺🇸
Self taught by ear No scales or chord lessons asa kid?
Joe died May 23, 1994, only a half a year after this interview. He was 65.
Fantastic artist. He gives fantastic insight, but he said an artist should never take advice in terms of how to do their craft. I can agree unless the two ppl have the same idea in terms of what particular little thing they are striving towards, for instance, how to do a particular brass instrument technique.
Nice work, Freddie! Glad I found this. Hope you're well.
TRhanks Kenny. I have many more to come.. Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Troupe, Margaret Whiting...
Thanks, doing great, the same to you kind sir!
Enjoying this!
Nice, thanks.
My pleasure.
🎸👑🙏🏻
very informative!! shaws the greatest of all!
Artie Shaw was and is a genius!
A most complex man a most talented man with endless ideas when improvising. The genius of Artie Shaw was that his creativity level was endless, he could play chorus after chorus and not repeat his phrases always playing something different he was a real super talent indeed. The interviewer did an outstanding job here letting Artie do his thing and i think he caught Artie in a pleasant mood and kept him there.
Your comment is most intelligent and spot on!
@@scotnick59 Thank you Kirk! There's a terrific book called 'three chords for beauty's sake' about the life of Artie Shaw and i highly recommend it. Written by Tom Nolan
I was told that he did not suffer fools, or any type of un-prepairedness. He was relaxed and candid after the first 5 minutes, as I was prepared for his visit and did my homework. Thanks for listening and there's more to come!
@@freddiejohnson5623 Thank you Freddie!
an incredible musician.. one of the greatest instrumentalists in jazz history.
He was Great 👍, among the Best 👌
Love, love, love Joe Pass. I enjoy him chatting verbally & his music is so clearly his wonderful personality. The stuff of him with Ella Fitzgerald is magical.
Great interview, fantastic photos, thanks!
Joe says he didn't follow Django's style, then in Rocking Chair those licks sound Djangoish to me!
That opening quartet track is jumpin' , beautiful!
Thank you very much for posting this. You did a great job with a potentially difficult subject, and it's fascinating to hear him so relaxed and spontaneous, illustrating the various subjects you mentioned.
It was a great morning!!
Much appreciated!
Joe mentions a Nick Gemus as a guitar teacher from his youth. Nick's brother, I believe his name was Jimmy, was a heavy duty musician himself (flute), playing under Toscaninni, touring with Red Norvo, playing in the pit for the original production of West Side Story. Jim Gemus grandson is a very fine upright jazz bass player, who for years played with the great jazz drummer of Stan Kenton fame, John Von Ohlen. And the great jazz world continues to spin....
"He (Van Gogh) lost an ear in the deal, too." Artie: "Pardon?"
Hear hear, then - not 'ear 'ear.
Artie could be funny in a highly intellectual way.
Awww miss you joe
Stuff on Joe Pass is so rare. Very nice to listen to this. Thanks for posting.
My pleasure indeed. What a great cat!
The interviewer sounds like Dan beelher , i guess he s canadian
I'm from Pasadena, CA!!
WOW!!! Thank-you so much for this, its great!!!
Mr Johnson, thank you for this amazing interview. I've heard many interviews with Artie shaw and at some point he gets easily irritated. You manage to keep his interest and to avoid talking about the obvious (Begin the Beguine, Ava Gardner etc..). His interview with the late Arnold Dean (host of One Night Stand with the Big Bands WTIC radio) in 1971 was also very good.
That was my goal throughout. And he said that he had fun. Phew!
Okay- PS- Anita mentions to the interviewer- the film, "They Shoot Horses Dont They?".. THAT film truly gives the idea of what those marathon dances were really like. Anita did that before she was famous. The interviewer , Mr. Freddie Johnson- didnt really give it much time and no thought. But Anita told the truth! Watch that film and youll see what life was like then and what Anita was involved in when she was very very young.
She was much more than a pretty face. She was true jazz. True soul of a woman. But kind and sweet spirited, from what Ive gathered. Lifelong fan here. Thanks for this interview- and music!
アニタは可愛い顔にハスキーな声がアンバランスな感じですが、それがまたなんともいえないほど魅力的ですね
God gift right.
He was a really funny guy
Joe Pass is a great interviewee. Every one I have watched or listened to, he throws out interesting & surprising stuff..
Hey, Fred, remembering the good times. Hope all is well. D
Dennis FitzGerald thanks Dennis. They were great years!!
