“Epic Day at the Fish Farm: Clearing the Top Lake with a 16-Tonne CAT Excavator!”
Join us for an action-packed day at the fish farm in France as we tackle clearing an area at the top of the lake i have been wanting to do for a while now.
Using our trusty 16-tonne CAT excavator, we’re clearing out overgrown trees from the top lake to increase the overall surface area of the lake, also increasing the area of shallow water to help early spring temps and growing season. I will not be letting the cleared trees go to waste-every branch and trunk will be repurposed to create a wildlife hedge, providing a perfect habitat for local animals and birds.
Watch as we balance heavy machinery work with eco-friendly efforts to enhance the natural beauty and sustainability of the farm. Don’t miss the behind-the-scenes insights and satisfying progress shots!
🎥 Highlights in this video:
• Clearing trees with the CAT excavator
• Managing the top lake restoration project
• Building a wildlife hedge with the cleared trees
• A sneak peek at life on a French fish farm
Subscribe for more farm adventures, heavy machinery action, and sustainable living projects!

After the successful harvest this year several thousand C1’s were graded to just 500 of the very best fish. This first grading picks the best fish in terms of scale patterns and size and these fish are released in this video into the Leney Pond. These fish will be fed over winter and then graded again in March down to just 250 fish. These fish will spend their summer in the 0.5 acre spring fed ...

In this video, we explore the process of adding calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) to Fensmere as a proven method for improving water quality and addressing excessive siltation. Calcium carbonate is a natural, eco-friendly solution often used to counteract the negative effects of sediment buildup and imbalanced pH levels in aquatic environments. The process begins with a detailed assessment of the lake’...

Over the French Bastille Holiday period I had been due to be fishing Rainbow with my good mate Wayne Cooper on Poste 21, but due to the rain we had during the spring the water levels were super high and Poste 21 was underwater and the trip was cancelled. I needed a new venue so made the last minute decision to head to Salagou for a 10 day session. I ended up fishing 3 different areas during my ...

After a huge few days (those who know know) the final delivery of fish was delivered to Lac Perdu with the help of Billy Berridge the lake owner. This group of fish was a great mix of C3 commons and mirrors and I am very sure they will grow on to become very special target fish. profile.php?id=61556642646921 profile.php?id=100094269684660 fensmere.com/ fensmerefishfarm...

Biosecurity is a critical aspect of sustainable fish farming, playing a key role in protecting fish populations from harmful pathogens and diseases. By implementing effective biosecurity measures at Fensmere we can safeguard the health of our stock, maintain water quality, and reduce economic losses caused by disease outbreaks. One essential tool in this effort is the use of high-quality disinf...

After leaving the small half acre fry pond at the fish farm fallows during the initial grading and moving those fish up into the top lake, we had calcium carbonated the silt to aid the breakdown of the organic matter and I'd let the pond refill. It refills from its natural spring and it's very beautiful fresh spring water. Now to get a really good medium for the for the fry to thrive in, we see...

The old FARMALL Tractor had been sitting at the Fish Farm for a few years and as we have a 72hp Kubota it just wasn't getting used. It was such a beautiful old girl though and I decided to see if she would start and drive her the 10km back to Fensmere for a little TLC before selling her. Check out how she went after not being started for several years. profile.php?id=61556642646921...

After a very successful initial spring opening on Fensmere, which saw some fantastic captures and some huge fish, people might have seen Kevin Ellis was able to join us very early on and had The General at 72lb and Andy's fish at just over 70 in a single week's fishing (The General, contrary to what I say on the video, actually came out at a record weight of 75.08 record weight) and was one of ...

This video shows the harvest from the main lake at Fensmere Fish Farm 2024. A great day where we removed and graded over 3000kgs of Carp from the main lake at Fensmere Fish Farm. The bulk of the fish netted and graded were C3 (3 summers old) weighing between 14 - 20lb. We also has some very big fish from C4 - C7's up to just under 60lb. The fish in the main lake also had a very successful spawn...

I like to try and have a daily walk around the farm. There are many reasons for this and they include checking for predation or any signs of Otters, Mink, Cormorants and Herons. All of the above add a level of complexity to producing fish and each animal has different ways of dealing with them. I also like to check all the overflow grates to make sure they are clear of debris just in case we ge...

In Part 1 of Feeding Carp in the Winter, I'm going to look at what most fisheries are getting wrong. Fish are ectothermic creatures and therefore their body temperature is that of the surrounding water and the enzymes that break down the food in their very simple stomachs do not work very efficiently during the wintertime when the water temperatures are below 10 degrees. I know a lot of fishery...

Welcome to The Fensmere Carpy Chronicles. After being asked by many people I have decided to film the day to day life of a carp fish farmer and lake owner here in central France. I may even take you along in some big Public Water fishing trips as well along the way. Having fished and been involved in the Carp scene since the early 80’s. I hope the content will be informative, humorous at times ...

Hi Toby, this was last year 2024. Wayne and I had 21 booked for 2 weeks, but it only opened a week later 🤦‍♂️ I wanted to do something a little different and have an adventure, so headed to Salagou. In the end it was the wrong time of year and apart from the fish the Germans caught I didn’t see another fish caught the 10 days I was there. It was a great trip though and I got a heap of knowledge banked for future trips 👍

Hi Mark when you dig that top end of the C1 pond would it not be worth creating a silt trap whilst you’ve got the machine there. That way you’ve only got to empty that periodically and it will protect anything nasty coming into the lake. Just a thought mate. Chris
